Joseph Smith As An American Restorationist, Richard T. Hughes Dec 2005

Joseph Smith As An American Restorationist, Richard T. Hughes

BYU Studies

Richard Bushman’s wonderfully expansive paper “Joseph Smith’s Many Histories” reminds us in forceful ways of the historical complexity that helped create the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith. Bushman also reminds us that while historical complexity is embedded in history, it embeds itself as well in the hearts and minds of human beings who discover the various realities of history and then appropriate those realities for their own purposes. As an illustration of this point, Bushman tells the story of Christopher Columbus— how his standing as the grandfather of the United States was neither acknowledged nor celebrated until after 1776.

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch Dec 2005

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

My thoughts on Joseph Smith’s interest in past worlds cluster into three sections. The first deals with the challenge of evaluating and assessing Joseph Smith’s recoveries of texts or views from past worlds or civilizations. The second develops a list of ways in which the past functioned in Joseph Smith’s process of continuing revelation. The third focuses on the dynamic link between the past and the present in Joseph Smith’s concept of priesthood authority and its restoration.

Discovering Informative Connection Subgraphs In Multi-Relational Graphs, Cartic Ramakrishnan, William Milnor, Matthew Perry, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering patterns in graphs has long been an area of interest. In most approaches to such pattern discovery either quantitative anomalies, frequency of substructure or maximum flow is used to measure the interestingness of a pattern. In this paper we introduce heuristics that guide a subgraph discovery algorithm away from banal paths towards more "informative" ones. Given an RDF graph a user might pose a question of the form: "What are the most relevant ways in which entity X is related to entity Y?" the response to which is a subgraph connecting X to Y. We use our heuristics to …

Internet Usage And Information Seeking Behaviour Of Students Conducting History Projects: Determining The Need Of A Digital Library For Historical Resources, Abdullah Abrizah, Awang Ngah Zainab

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper reports the results of a user study done at the formative stage of development of a collaborative resource development (CoreDev) digital library for Malaysian historical resources by collaborating partners. CoreDev aims to provide an electronic system to help students obtain information on local history; collect, store and organize information in digital format; publish and share electronic resources. While most digital library projects were driven, by technology development and research, there has been little investigation into how to develop a creative, working community around a digital library. This paper presents preliminary findings on students' readiness and receptivity to participate …

Silence Please: The Case For Cell Phone Rejection, Nina Aversano Dec 2005

Silence Please: The Case For Cell Phone Rejection, Nina Aversano

Student Scholarship

Cell phone density in G8 countries ranges between 80 and 90 percent – except in the US where some 35 % of Americans have failed to adopt the technology. The relative reluctance of US consumers to embrace cellular technology is puzzling given that the barriers for use appear to be low and the benefits high. If rejection was the simple inverse of adoption, we would expect people to reject cellular telephony based on negative evaluations of usefulness and ease of use, dominant constructs in technology acceptance models. This research suggests, however, that barriers to cell phone rejection transcend those traditionally …

Section of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

Objective: To assess the success rate of tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis as the primary mode of voice rehabilitation in patients after total laryngectomy. Methods: Medical record files of 35 patients subjected to total laryngectomy were reviewed for determining success or failure of the voice prosthesis. The indicators used were quality of speech and utility of the device. Subsequent complications that developed were also assessed. In addition other factors taken into consideration were pharyngeal myotomy, use of radiation, and timing of replacement. All thirty five patients (n=35) had prosthesis placed at the time of laryngectomy. Results: The success rate at one month and four …

Revisiting Castlio And Ferris-Swift's Experiments Testing The Effects Of Splenic Pump In Normal Individuals, Donald R. Noll, Jane C. Johnson Dec 2005

Revisiting Castlio And Ferris-Swift's Experiments Testing The Effects Of Splenic Pump In Normal Individuals, Donald R. Noll, Jane C. Johnson

All KCOM Faculty Publications

Background: Castlio and Ferris-Swift conducted a series of experiments in the 1930s testing the scientific basis for using splenic pump manipulation to stimulate the immune system. Their work is still cited as evidence that the splenic pump technique is beneficial. However, they only reported case summaries of the data, indicating what percent of the cases increased or decreased relative to baseline and, therefore, limiting the certainty of their conclusions. To our knowledge, no one has published research confirming their findings. Objective: Our hypothesis is that an updated analysis of the raw data will support the original conclusions that splenic pump …

L’Écriture De La Femme Musulmane Dans Loin Demédine D’Assia Djebar, Yvonne-Marie Mokam

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Assia Djebar is one of the most important figures in contemporary African literature. Her views are structured around a critique of the misrepresentation of Muslim women. It is precisely this challenge that is undertaken in Loin de Médine (1991), in which Djebar challenges various stereotypes in order to offer a new image of Asian women.

Le Français D’Origine Maghrébine Face Au Prisme Médiatique, Hassiba Lassoued

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Whether we admit it or not, the mass media manipulates the masses. This fact proves to be especially dangerous in the context of French people of Maghrebian origin. The media presents them as either incapable of being “assimilated” or as models of integration. At any rate, there seems to be no middle ground between these two extremes.

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper Dec 2005

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper

Journal Articles

The need for inclusion of comprehensive tobacco control education/training for health care providers continues to be stressed in publications addressing cessation services. The dental appointment presents an excellent opportunity to provide tobacco interventions to basically healthy people on regular intervals. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to assess the need (stage of change and concomitant need for tobacco cessation intervention) of dental hygiene patients at a Midwest dental hygiene clinic, and 2) to assess and compare the level of tobacco intervention education currently being offered by dental hygiene educators in a Midwestern state. Patients (n=426) of a collegiate …

Determination Of Stiffness Matrix Of Tapered Roller Bearings For Vibration Models, Jeeva Kumar Dec 2005

Determination Of Stiffness Matrix Of Tapered Roller Bearings For Vibration Models, Jeeva Kumar

Masters Theses

The stiffness matrix of tapered roller bearings under radial and axial load conditions was evaluated using an analytical model and an experimental approach. An experimental test system was designed and manufactured to determine the radial stiffness of the bearing under combined axial and radial load conditions. A second fixture was designed to measure the stiffness of the bearing under pure axial load conditions. The stiffness coefficients determined have been compared with those obtained from the analytical model, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) data and ABAQUS model (finite element analysis software).

How Hard Is It To Cheat In The Gale-Shapley Stable Matching Algorithm, Chien-Chung Huang Dec 2005

How Hard Is It To Cheat In The Gale-Shapley Stable Matching Algorithm, Chien-Chung Huang

Computer Science Technical Reports

We study strategy issues surrounding the stable marriage problem. Under the Gale-Shapley algorithm (with men proposing), a classical theorem says that it is impossible for every liar to get a better partner. We try to challenge this theorem. First, observing a loophole in the statement of the theorem, we devise a coalition strategy in which a non-empty subset of the liars gets a better partner and no man is worse off than before. This strategy is restricted in that not everyone has the incentive to cheat. We attack the classical theorem further by means of randomization. However, this theorem shows …

Perceptions Of High Risk Behaviors Among Culturally Diverse Adolescents And The Role Of Parental Influence And Parent Communication, Sharlene E. Junio

Master's Projects

Eighty seven ethnically diverse 9th and 1oth graders from an urban high school in Northern California were studied. Students were mostly female, between 14 and 16 years of age, and reported to be mostly Asian and Filipino. Students completed an 18-item Likert scale questionnaire requesting information about their overall relationship with their parents and their communication with their parents about drugs, sex, alcohol, birth control, and personal problems. Results of this study showed that participants rated their overall relationship with their parents as "good" or "very good." Despite this, communication was lacking among parents and adolescents in all topics of …

Job Satisfaction Among Staff Nurses In Mental Health Units In A Va Facility, Edith R. Lombard

Master's Projects

Studies have indicated that work environment in mental health is stressful, however, few studies have focused on staff working in acute mental health settings (Jenkins & Elliott, 2004). The purpose of this study was to describe job satisfaction among a sample of mental health staff nurses who were caring for patients with acute psychiatric disorders in a federal hospital. The second purpose was to determine if there were relationships between global job satisfaction and ethnicity, years in the organization, current unit, field of nursing, working with patients with mental disorders and age of staff nurses. An anonymous survey was distributed …

Nurses' Perception Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Josephine Njoku Dec 2005

Nurses' Perception Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Josephine Njoku

Master's Projects

Background Family witnessed resuscitation (FWR) is the concept of allowing family members at bedside during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Studies have shown that the lack of standard policies by hospitals regarding FWR forces nurses to make different decisions regarding family presence at bedside during resuscitation. The framework for this study is Sandman's teleological model. Objectives To examine nurses' perceptions of having family members present during adult cardiac resuscitation. Methods A descriptive study of 57 registered nurses (n = 57) from northern California was conducted. Participants completed a mailed survey consisting of a 22-item Likert scale questionnaire titled "Family Presence Risk-Benefit Scale." Results …
