Electric-Field Generated By The Combustion Of Titanium In Nitrogen, Karen S. Martirosyan, Mona Setoodeh, Dan Luss Jan 2005

Electric-Field Generated By The Combustion Of Titanium In Nitrogen, Karen S. Martirosyan, Mona Setoodeh, Dan Luss

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A short temporal electrical impulse (duration of 30–150ms) was generated during the nitridation of mixtures of titanium and titanium nitride by a high temperature moving reaction front. The maximum voltage and current were generated in the combustion front region, in which the conversion of Ti to TiN was incomplete. The electric field (voltage up to 2V and current up to 60mA) decayed and vanished before the maximum combustion temperature was attained. The generation of an electric field during a rapid high-temperature nitridation is most probably due to the different diffusion velocities of charge carriers through the growing titanium nitride shell …

Social Games: Matching And The Play Of Finitely Repeated Games, Alison Watts, Matthew O. Jackson Jan 2005

Social Games: Matching And The Play Of Finitely Repeated Games, Alison Watts, Matthew O. Jackson

Economics Discussion Papers

We examine a new class of games, which we call social games, where players not only choose strategies but also choose with whom they play. A group of players who are dissatisfied with the play of their current partners can join together and play a new equilibrium. This imposes new refinements on equilibrium play, where play depends on the relative populations of players in different roles, among other things. We also examine finite repetitions of games where players may choose to rematch in any period. Some equilibria of fixed-player repeated games cannot be sustained as equilibria in a repeated social …

Bilateral War In A Multilateral World: Carrots And Sticks For Conflict Resolution, Zsolt Becsi, Sajal Lahiri Jan 2005

Bilateral War In A Multilateral World: Carrots And Sticks For Conflict Resolution, Zsolt Becsi, Sajal Lahiri

Economics Discussion Papers

This paper constructs a three-country, many-good and many-factor trade-theoretic model in which two of the countries are in conflict and where war effort is determined endogenously in a Nash equilibrium. The third country does not take part in the war, but trades with the warring countries. In the framework, we examine, inter alia, how war and welfare are affected by globalization and by two instruments available to the third country — one carrot and one stick. Our overall conclusion is that the third parties do have the incentives for, and can play an effective role in, conflict resolution.

Price Convergence Among Indian Cities: A Cointegration Approach, A.K.M. Mahbub Morshed, Sung K. Ahn, Minsoo Lee Jan 2005

Price Convergence Among Indian Cities: A Cointegration Approach, A.K.M. Mahbub Morshed, Sung K. Ahn, Minsoo Lee

Economics Discussion Papers

Price dynamics in Indian cities were examined using cointegration analysis. We identified and calculated a common trend for prices in 25 major cities in India. Impulse response functions were obtained to calculate the rates of convergence to the prices and we found that the half-life of any shock is very small for Indian cities. Although a close to three-month half-life seems too fast, there is some indication in the literature that half-life can be much smaller than the conventional rates of 3 to 5 years. We have calculated half-life using the panel unit root method, and found that estimates of …

Some Resource Economics Of Invasive Species, Basharat A. Pitafi, James A. Roumasset Jan 2005

Some Resource Economics Of Invasive Species, Basharat A. Pitafi, James A. Roumasset

Economics Discussion Papers

An emerging problem for environmental policy is how to design efficient strategies for the prevention and control of invasive species. However, the literature has mostly focused either on pre-introduction prevention or post-introduction control of an invasive. The benefits of prevention cannot be understood or estimated without knowing the costs of post-introduction control. This paper provides an integrated framework where optimal prevention is combined with optimal pest removal.

Engine Data Classification With Simultaneous Recurrent Network Using A Hybrid Pso-Ea Algorithm, Xindi Cai, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2005

Engine Data Classification With Simultaneous Recurrent Network Using A Hybrid Pso-Ea Algorithm, Xindi Cai, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We applied an architecture which automates the design of simultaneous recurrent network (SRN) using a new evolutionary learning algorithm. This new evolutionary learning algorithm is based on a hybrid of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and evolutionary algorithm (EA). By combining the searching abilities of these two global optimization methods, the evolution of individuals is no longer restricted to be in the same generation, and better performed individuals may produce offspring to replace those with poor performance. The novel algorithm is then applied to the simultaneous recurrent network for the engine data classification. The experimental results show that our approach gives …

Issue-Related Learning In A Gubernatorial Campaign : A Panel Study., Stephen C. Craig, James G. Kane, Jason Gainous

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This study is based on data from a three-wave telephone panel survey conducted during the 1998 governor's race in Florida. The evidence suggests that a considerable amount of issue-related learning (having to do with candidate policy stands and group endorsements) took place over the course of the general election campaign, though substantial differences were observed from one issue area to the next. Further analysis indicates that learning was especially likely to occur among voters who (a) were more knowledgeable about political affairs to start with(confirming that the so-called "knowledge gap" may be exacerbated during campaigns); (b)scored high on a measure …

Image Recognition Systems With Permutative Coding, Ernst M. Kussul, Donald C. Wunsch, Tatiana N. Baidyk Jan 2005

Image Recognition Systems With Permutative Coding, Ernst M. Kussul, Donald C. Wunsch, Tatiana N. Baidyk

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A feature extractor and neural classifier for image recognition system are proposed. They are based on the permutative coding technique which continues our investigations on neural networks. It permits us to obtain sufficiently general description of the image to be recognized. Different types of images were used to test the proposed image recognition system. It was tested on the handwritten digit recognition problem, the face recognition problem and the shape of microobjects recognition problem. The results of testing are very promising. The error rate for the MNIST database is 0.44% and for the ORL database is 0.1%.

Persuasive Email Messages For Patient Communication, Muhammad Walji, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Todd Johnson, Elmer Bernstam, Jiajie Zhang Jan 2005

Persuasive Email Messages For Patient Communication, Muhammad Walji, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Todd Johnson, Elmer Bernstam, Jiajie Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

To improve health and reduce costs, we need to encourage patients to make better health care decisions. Since email is widely available, it may be useful for patient-directed interventions. However, we know little about how the contents of an email message can influence a health-related decision. We propose a model to understand how patients may process persuasive email messages.

An Adaptive Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Based Controller For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2005

An Adaptive Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Based Controller For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An adaptive Mamdani based fuzzy logic controller has been designed for controlling a static compensator (STATCOM) in a multimachine power system. Such a controller does not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently control a STATCOM during different disturbances in the network. A model free approach using the controller output error is applied for training purposes that adaptively changes the controller output parameters based on a gradient descent method. Moreover, shrinking span membership functions are used for a more stable and accurate control performance. Simulation results show that the proposed controller outperforms the conventional …

Analytical Model For The Rectangular Power-Ground Structure Including Radiation Loss, Ji Chen, Todd H. Hubing, Weimin Shi, R. L. Chen Jan 2005

Analytical Model For The Rectangular Power-Ground Structure Including Radiation Loss, Ji Chen, Todd H. Hubing, Weimin Shi, R. L. Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An accurate analytical model to predict via coupling within rectangular power-return plane structures is developed. Loss mechanisms, including radiation loss, dielectric loss, and conductor loss, are considered in this model. The radiation loss is incorporated into a complex propagating wavenumber as an artificial loss mechanism. The quality factors associated with three loss mechanisms are calculated and compared. The effects of radiation loss on input impedances and reflection coefficients are investigated for both high-dielectric-loss and low-dielectric-loss printed circuit boards. Measurements are performed to validate the effectiveness of this model.

Calibration And Compensation Of Near-Field Scan Measurements, Masahiro Yamaguchi, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Michael A. Cracraft, Jin Shi Jan 2005

Calibration And Compensation Of Near-Field Scan Measurements, Masahiro Yamaguchi, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Michael A. Cracraft, Jin Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A procedure for the calibration and compensation of near-field scanning is described and demonstrated. Ultimately, the objective is to quantify the individual field components associated with electromagnetic interference (EMI) from high speed circuitry and devices. Specific examples of these methods are shown. The effects of compensation are small but noticeable when the uncompensated output signal from near field scanning is already a very good representation of the field being measured. In other cases, the improvement provided by compensation can be significant when the uncompensated output signal bears little resemblance to the underlying field.

Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik’S ‘Confrontation’: A Reassessment, Marshall J. Breger Jan 2005

Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik’S ‘Confrontation’: A Reassessment, Marshall J. Breger

Scholarly Articles

Responding to a recent symposium on Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik's 1964 article on the propriety of Christian-Jewish dialogue, this essay begins by assessing several arguments put forth by Soloveitchik. These include the incommensurability of religious faith, the risks interreligious dialogue presents to the Jewish minority, the dangers of syncretism, and the ability to separate neatly the sacred and the profane. The article then proceeds to discuss the nature of Catholic-Jewish today, and concludes with thoughts about the future of Christian and Jewish interaction.

Natural Born In The U.S.A.: The Striking Unfairness And Dangerous Ambiguity Of The Constitution’S Presidential Qualifications Clause And Why We Need To Fix It, Sarah Helene Duggin, Mary Beth Collins

Scholarly Articles

This article explores the controversy surrounding the natural born citizenship proviso in order to demonstrate why a constitutional amendment is necessary to eliminate its inherent inequity and uncertain applicability, and to offer substantive recommendations for initiating such an amendment. Part I begins with a brief discussion of the historical and legal context of the natural born citizenship proviso. Part II explores the elusive nature of the term "natural bom Citizen," and Part III focuses on the perils of passively awaiting judicial resolution of its meaning. The structural and policy reasons why limiting the Presidency to natural born citizens is inconsistent …

Congressional Threats Of Removal Against Federal Judges, Marc O. Degirolami

Scholarly Articles

This article explores the use of threats of removal against federal judges and why their incidence is likely to increase. In Part I, after presenting the textual sources authorizing judicial removal, I survey briefly the history and quality of certain judicial impeachments and threatened removals. In Part II, I examine two recent pieces of legislation, the Feeney Amendment and House of Representatives Resolution 568 (which has not yet been enacted), that serve as able vehicles for legislators to threaten judges with removal for noncompliance with certain political ideologies or objectives. In Part III, I ask what may explain the increased …

Neural Network Applications In Agricultural Economics, Jianhua Chen Jan 2005

Neural Network Applications In Agricultural Economics, Jianhua Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Neural networks have become very important tools in many areas including economic researches. The objectives of this thesis are to examine the fundamental components, concepts and theory of neural network methods from econometric and statistic perspective, with particular focus on econometrically and statistically relevant models. In order to evaluate the relative effectiveness of econometric and neural network methods, two empirical studies are conducted by applying neural network methods in a methodological comparison fashion with traditional econometric models. Both neural networks and econometrics have similar models, common problems of modeling and interference. Neural networks and econometrics/statistics, particularly their discriminant methods, are two …

Examining Flow States And Motivational Perspectives Of Ashtanga Yoga Practitioners, Leslie Lynn Phillips Jan 2005

Examining Flow States And Motivational Perspectives Of Ashtanga Yoga Practitioners, Leslie Lynn Phillips

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Flow state refers to an optimal psychological experience and is associated with a number of experiential qualities one of which is complete absorption in the task at hand. Self-determination theory provides a framework for examining the relation between different types of motivation and flow because it distinguishes among different forms of motivation based on the degree that they can be considered self-determined. Although flow has been studied among athletes and, to a lesser degree, exercisers, no studies have focused on the flow experiences of yoga practitioners. Yoga, which originated in India, has been gaining popularity in the United States. The …
