Issec: A Socio-Technical Dss For Information Security Planning, Brian D. Fritz, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

The traditional notion of information security, rooted in a solidly technical foundation, has within the past decade seen wide criticism within academia - much of which has originated from the social sciences community - as being narrow and technology-centric instead of holistic and organizational in its focus. As information security awareness encompasses an ever-greater scope of organizational dynamics, it becomes necessary for us to develop design methodologies and ultimately, systems, capable of dealing practically with the complex and multifaceted nature of the decision-making of information systems security which is entailed by the emerging notions of a new paradigm for security. …

Effectiveness Of Hybrid Learning Environments, Omar F. El-Gayar, Terry Dennis Jan 2005

Effectiveness Of Hybrid Learning Environments, Omar F. El-Gayar, Terry Dennis

Research & Publications

Hybrid learning environment (HLE) is a classroom- and computer-based environment that is an open system, allowing synchronous and asynchronous interactions and encounters with other participants. This paper assesses the learning effectiveness of students in HLE for two core MSIS courses at DSU. In conclusion, the results attest to the viability of HLE. In-class and video conferencing students get to benefit from the virtual classroom setting (supporting web-site, asynchronous communication via electronic discussion board and email, and the opportunity to review the recorded class), while Internet students get to benefit by reducing the anxiety and feeling of isolation through the opportunity …

An Agent-Based Approach For Sourcing Business Rules In Supply Chain Management, Jun Liu, Sudha Ram Jan 2005

An Agent-Based Approach For Sourcing Business Rules In Supply Chain Management, Jun Liu, Sudha Ram

Research & Publications

In recent years, business rule management has become an important component of enterprise information systems. Business rules represent guidelines about how an enterprise should conduct its business and provide better service for customers. Business rules are being widely deployed in supply chains to support real-time decision making. The research reported in this paper is aimed at designing a dynamically adaptable data-sourcing service for deploying business rules effectively in supply chain management. Such a data-sourcing service is important since execution of business rules requires data to be retrieved from various data sources spread across the enterprise, including the enterprise data warehouse. …

Advances In In-Situ Calibration Of Attitude And Doppler Sensors For Precision Oceanographic Submersible Navigation, James C. Kinsey Jan 2005

Advances In In-Situ Calibration Of Attitude And Doppler Sensors For Precision Oceanographic Submersible Navigation, James C. Kinsey

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

This paper reviews the development and experimental evaluation of three techniques for estimating the alignment matrix of Doppler sonars, which are commonly used for precision navigation of oceanographic submersibles, employing sensors commonly employed aboard these vehicles. Most previously reported methods addressed the problem of single degree of freedom alignment using bottom-lock Doppler sonar data and global positioning system (GPS) navigation data. This paper reviews three techniques for three degree of freedom calibration of attitude and Doppler sonar sensors, using sensor data available to vehicles at full ocean depth. The first technique provides a general linear least-square estimate of the alignment …

Pre-Computation Approach To Nonlinear Simulations Of Deformable Objects, Jernej Barbic Jan 2005

Pre-Computation Approach To Nonlinear Simulations Of Deformable Objects, Jernej Barbic

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

My research area involves building real-time interactive simulations of solid deformable objects. For example, liver tissue should defo1m realistically during a vi1tual surgery simulation. A virtual assembly simulation can catch airplane construction design flaws early on during the manufacturing process. Deformable objects are also useful in computer games, for example to model the motion of trees in the wind. Researchers in computational physics, mechanics, and applied mathematics have been developing algorithms for simulations of deformable objects for the past 40 years. However, the partial differential equations of solid continuum mechanics that govern deformations of physical objects are very involved and …

Creating Geo-Specific Road Databases For A Real-Time Interactive Driving Simulator, Dahai Guo Jan 2005

Creating Geo-Specific Road Databases For A Real-Time Interactive Driving Simulator, Dahai Guo

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Geo-specific road database development is important to a driving simulation system and a very labor intensive process. Road databases for driving simulation need high resolution and accuracy. Even though commercial software is available on the market, a lot of manual work still has to be done when the road crosssectional profile is not uniform. This research deals with geo-specific road databases development, especially for roads with non-uniform cross sections. In this research, the United States Geographical Survey (USGS) road information is used with aerial photos to accurately extract road boundaries, using image segmentation and data compression techniques. Image segmentation plays …

The Flight From Experience To Representation: Seeing Relational Complexity In Teacher Education, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta, James C. Field Jan 2005

The Flight From Experience To Representation: Seeing Relational Complexity In Teacher Education, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta, James C. Field

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Gaining access to the inherent relational complexity of teaching/learning situations is essential to learning to teach. As teacher educators our work with prospective teachers indicates that opportunities to develop the capacity for relational knowing are increasingly being denied and dismissed. Specifically, we are concerned with what we perceive to be a flight from the experience of relational complexities, demanding constant discernment in the concrete situated dimensions of teaching and learning, into representative certainty and singularity in ways of seeing, thinking, and doing in classrooms. This paper documents this concern and explores the consequences of such disregard.

An Action Research Project On Preparing Teachers To Meet The Needs Of Underserved Student Populations, Gayle A. Buck, Jeanene G. Cordes Jan 2005

An Action Research Project On Preparing Teachers To Meet The Needs Of Underserved Student Populations, Gayle A. Buck, Jeanene G. Cordes

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The focus of this action research study was on the initial stage in reforming our teacher preparation programs. We designed, conducted, evaluated, and revised the components of our teacher preparation programs that were aimed at providing preservice teachers with the confidence and knowledge needed to meet the needs of youth populations underserved in science education. The conceptual framework of this study predicted that providing preservice teachers with experiences in teaching science to at-risk youth in a nonformal educational setting and that exploring these experiences in a seminar setting will increase the teachers’ confidence and knowledge in regard to teaching science …

Non-Violation Complaints: Wto Issues And Recent Free Trade Agreements, Locknie Hsu Jan 2005

Non-Violation Complaints: Wto Issues And Recent Free Trade Agreements, Locknie Hsu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The proliferation of free trade agreements (FTAs) in the last decade has resulted in an accompanying increase in dispute settlement regimes pertaining to those agreements. One obvious consequence is that increasingly, states are exposing themselves to such complaints, and not necessarily with the limitations that have been imposed on the at General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)/World Trade Organization (WTO). The inherent ambiguity surrounding non-violation complaints at the WTO, and other risks relating to such complaints, are being multiplied manifold by these FTAs. The non-violation concept appears to have originated even before the GATT came into being. Developing-country FTA …

Contract Formation And Mistake In Cyberspace – The Singapore Experience, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 2005

Contract Formation And Mistake In Cyberspace – The Singapore Experience, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The present article analyses the many important issues that are raised by what is probably the first case on Internet mistake – the Singapore High Court decision of Chwee Kin Keong v Digilandmall.com Pte Ltd [2004] 2 SLR 594. In addition to the law of (especially, unilateral) mistake, issues relating to the formation of a contract will be considered (including the law relating to offer and acceptance with regard to both website advertisements as well as electronic mail transactions, and the weakness of (and, hence, need to reform) the doctrine of consideration).

Is The Contractor More Secure With A Priority Right? A Functional Analysis Of Article 286 Of Prc Contract Law, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In recent years, China’s economic boom has drawn considerable attention all around the world. Real estate development is among the strongest pillars that support the fast growing GDP of this country. When fascinated by the shining residential buildings, office towers and public facilities sprouting across the country, however, we are also surprised at the mountains of the outstanding debts that Chinese contractors are not able to collect. Statistics shows that the aggregate amount of overdue payment to contractors has increased steadily during the past 15 years nationwide, with about $440 million in 1990, $2.4 billion in 1992, $3.7 billion in …

Private International Law-Making For The Financial Markets, Caroline Bradley Jan 2005

Private International Law-Making For The Financial Markets, Caroline Bradley

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article argues that transnational financial transactions create new opportunities for private groups to influence legal and regulatory rules. Internationalization of the financial markets has led to harmonization of financial law. Much harmonization of financial law occurs through processes that are apparently public, state-centered, and transparent, but this Article describes three ways in which private and opaque processes have a significant influence on policy development in the area of financial law. These are private international law-making through private involvement in public rule-making processes, through contracting, and through the actions of private sector regulatory entrepreneurs.

Critical Analysis Of The International Court Of Justice Ruling On Israel's Security Barrier, Michael J. Kelly Jan 2005

Critical Analysis Of The International Court Of Justice Ruling On Israel's Security Barrier, Michael J. Kelly

Fordham International Law Journal

On July 9, 2004, the International Court of Justice (“ICJ”) handed down an Advisory Opinion concerning the Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In producing the Opinion, the Court traversed issues concerning its jurisdiction to deal with the request, the applicable law, the adherence by Israel to that law, the right of self-defense and the consequences of its findings of unlawfulness. It is well known that the long running issue of Israeli and Palestinian reconciliation is a politically heated one and the work of the ICJ has not been immune from the effects …

Economic Growth, Democracy, The Rule Of Law, And China's Future, Miron Mushkat, Roda Mushkat Jan 2005

Economic Growth, Democracy, The Rule Of Law, And China's Future, Miron Mushkat, Roda Mushkat

Fordham International Law Journal

China still relies predominantly on the “rule of man” (as distinct from the rule of law) and is by no means ready to embrace democracy. Its foreign policy stance has not been overly aggressive for some time but China may have not acted, at least consistently and unambiguously so, in a manner that reflects its size and status as a leading regional power. The rapid economic growth it has experienced--a pattern that should remain intact--might thus contribute toward internal relaxation and external moderation. Both the internal and external sides of the picture merit careful consideration. However, this Essay focuses, from …

Developing Countries At Crossroads: Aid, Public Participation, And The Regulation Of Trade In Genetically Modified Foods, J.M. Migai Akech

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article reviews the experience of developing countries with the regulation of trade in GM food products in light of such bilateral pressures and argues that there is a need for broader public participation in the regulation of biotechnology as this will facilitate national governance in an era in which the international trade regime is rapidly eroding national regulatory decision-making autonomy. Furthermore, broadening public participation promises to rescue governments of developing countries from the aforementioned bilateral pressures by helping to strengthen their hands in negotiations for technical assistance and food aid. That is, developing country governments can use participatory regulatory …

Leveling The Playing Field: Labor Provisions In Cafta, Marisa Anne Pagnattaro Jan 2005

Leveling The Playing Field: Labor Provisions In Cafta, Marisa Anne Pagnattaro

Fordham International Law Journal

Part I of this Article details labor problems in CAFTA countries, with specific emphasis on problems related to fundamental labor rights. Part II discusses the labor-related trading objectives mandated by the U.S. Congress in the TPA, including the relationship of those objectives to core international labor standards promulgated by the International Labor Organization ("ILO"). Part III then analyzes the labor provisions that are included in CAFTA. To the extent that these provisions do not fulfill the labor objectives set forth in the TPA and do not adequately promote core international labor standards, Part IV proposes provisions that the United States …

"External" Versus "Internal" In International Law, Martin S. Flaherty Jan 2005

"External" Versus "Internal" In International Law, Martin S. Flaherty

Fordham International Law Journal

The issues and analyses in this issue of the Fordham International Law Journal provide excellent cases for testing how a conventional approach would mediate current external pressures for legal change on current international and foreign relations law commitments. As it turns out, the results suggest that sovereigntist concerns are overblown, but that internationalist advocates ignore them completely at their peril.
