An Analysis Of Biometric Technology As An Enabler To Information Assurance, Darren A. Deschaine Mar 2005

An Analysis Of Biometric Technology As An Enabler To Information Assurance, Darren A. Deschaine

Theses and Dissertations

The use of and dependence on, Information technology (IT) has grown tremendously in the last two decades. Still, some believe the United States is only in the infancy of this growth. This explosive growth has opened the door to capabilities that were only dreamed of in the past. As easy as it is to see how advantageous this technology is, it also is clear that with its advantages come distinct responsibilities and new problems that must be addressed. For instance, the minute one begins using information processing systems, the world of information assurance (IA) becomes far more complex. As a …

A Historical Context Analysis Of Changes In Content Management Ideology, William Lee Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Digital content has grown continually over the past years, yet acceptance of a common definition of what is "content management" still generates debates in IS communities. This research will be a qualitative study using a combined approach of historical and context analysis of literary artifacts for drawing inferences to explore the evolutionary changes in content management ideology. Using a seven-step process, a specific structure is designed with a systematic approach to encounter the phenomena being researched and present the evidence of the results. Performing an analysis on the evolution of content management from a historical perspective will benefit researchers and …

Pronounced Clean, Comfortable, And Good Looking: The Passage Of Mormon Immigrants Through The Port Of Philadelphia, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

We were pronounced clean, comfortable, and good looking. So wrote LDS voyage leader Matthias Cowley after arriving in Philadelphia with a company of foreign Saints in the mid-nineteenth century. At this time, Latter-day Saint European immigrants, obeying the call to come to Zion, were gathering to America by the thousands on the way to their Mormon Mecca in Salt Lake City. They were obeying the call to come to Zion. In 1852, the First Presidency issued the following counsel: "When a people, or individuals, hear the Gospel, obey its first principles, are baptized for the remission of sins, and receive …

A Correlational Study Of Anxiety Level, Spiritual Practices, And Spiritual Well-Being, Darren N. Janzen

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Research has indicated that anxiety is the most prevalent of all psychological disorders, affecting up to 30 million people in the United States at some point during their lives (Lepine, 2002). It has also been determined that anxiety may be a fairly stable trait that people experience. Some people are more likely to experiencing anxiety than others, and for those who are more likely it is also more difficult to stop having anxiety. Predictors of anxiety have been identified and include such items as: low self-esteem, ineffective social support, high education, low religiosity (Hovey & Magana, 2002), low vocational satisfaction …

Alma's Enemies: The Case Of The Lamanites, Amlicites, And Mysterious Amalekites, J. Christopher Conkling Jan 2005

Alma's Enemies: The Case Of The Lamanites, Amlicites, And Mysterious Amalekites, J. Christopher Conkling

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In Alma 21 a new group of troublemakers is introduced—the Amalekites—without explanation or introduction. This article offers arguments that this is the same group called Amlicites elsewhere and that the confusion is caused by Oliver Cowdery’s inconsistency in spelling. If this theory is accurate, then Alma structured his narrative record more tightly and carefully than previously realized. The concept also challenges the simplicity of the good Nephite/bad Lamanite rubric so often used to describe the players in the book of Mormon.

Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran Jan 2005

Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran

All USU Press Publications

American first-year college writing courses operate without a powerful context: they are designed to teach academic writing, but what kind of academic writing? Which of the many particular discourses, and, within those discourses, which recurring social situations? Lacking a clear context to refer to, textbook authors inevitably privilege form. Genre across the Curriculum will function as a "good" textbook, one not for the student, but for the teacher, and one with an eye on the context of writing. Here you will find models of practice, descriptions written by teachers who have integrated the teaching of genre into their pedagogy in …

Accounting For A Disappearance: A Contribution To The History Of The Value Added Statement In The Uk, Chris Pong, Falconer Mitchell Jan 2005

Accounting For A Disappearance: A Contribution To The History Of The Value Added Statement In The Uk, Chris Pong, Falconer Mitchell

Accounting Historians Journal

Burchell et al's [1985] historical analysis of value added in the UK attributes its rise and fall to societal circumstances which initially encouraged the voluntary disclosure of the Value Added Statement (VAS) by companies and then, following societal change, influenced its disappearance. This paper supplements Burchell et al's thesis by arguing that a fuller explanation for the disappearance of the VAS can be found by also considering the contents of the statement itself. An empirical study of the information in the VASs of UK companies shows that they were unlikely to give support to the economic interests of the employee …

Accounting In History, Stephen P. Walker Jan 2005

Accounting In History, Stephen P. Walker

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this …

Electoral Reforms, Membership Stability And The Existence Of Committee Property Rights In American State Legislatures, Peverill Squire, Keith E. Hamm, Ronald D. Hedlund, Gary Moncrief Jan 2005

Electoral Reforms, Membership Stability And The Existence Of Committee Property Rights In American State Legislatures, Peverill Squire, Keith E. Hamm, Ronald D. Hedlund, Gary Moncrief

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most creative theories advanced about legislative organization in recent years is Katz and Sala's linkage of the development of committee property rights in the US House of Representatives to the introduction of the Australian ballot. Katz and Sala argue that the Australian ballot – a government-printed ballot cast in secret that replaced a party-produced ballot that was cast in public – gave members of the House an incentive to pursue personal constituency votes. This, in turn, led to the rise of committee property rights as members sought to keep their committee assignments from term to term because …

Accounting's Uses In Exploitative Human Engineering: Theorizing Citizenship, Indirect Rule And Britain's Imperial Expansion, Shanta S. K. Davie Jan 2005

Accounting's Uses In Exploitative Human Engineering: Theorizing Citizenship, Indirect Rule And Britain's Imperial Expansion, Shanta S. K. Davie

Accounting Historians Journal

This historical study starts from the argument that financial economic quantification using accounting concepts and analysis has always been an essential and integral part of effective policies and activities for Britain's empire building. Theories of citizenship are used in particular to examine the close association between accounting and imperial policies during British indirect rule in Fiji. Through an examination of archival data and other relevant source materials, the paper highlights the ways in which accounting helped translate imperial forms of oppression and injustice into everyday work practice. Indirect rule generally required the separation and subordination of the native population as …

Roaring Nineties: Accounting History Comes Of Age, Richard K. Fleischman, Vaughan S. Radcliffe Jan 2005

Roaring Nineties: Accounting History Comes Of Age, Richard K. Fleischman, Vaughan S. Radcliffe

Accounting Historians Journal

The paper outlines developments in the accounting history literature during the 1990s. The introduction chronicles the immense broadening of publication opportunities in accounting history that characterized the decade. To a certain extent, this enhancement of outlets resulted from a richer dialogue among accounting historians who became increasingly willing to debate paradigmatic and methodological issues. In this context, the paper identifies and discusses traditional and critical forms of accounting history and reviews work within the paradigms of economic-rationalist, Foucauldian, and Marxist/labor-process studies. The major elements of debate between old and new perspectives on accounting history are discussed and linked to later …

President Ho Speaks To The Children: Thieu Sinh Magazine And The New Child In 1945 Revolutionary Vietnam, Christina Elizabeth Firpo

History

The history of the immediate aftermath of the declaration of independence in Vietnam on September 2, 1945 awaits a socio-cultural analysis. Historiography of this period is saturated with military and political analyses. But how much do we really know about its social programs and cultural history? This paper examines the socio-cultural history of the child during the revolution. In the midst of forming a new government, unifying the anti-colonial movement, and fighting the return of the French colonial government, President Hồ Chí Minh called on the youth to liberate southern Vietnam.1 How did the government prepare the children for …

A Biographical Sketch Of William Edward Hearn (1826-1888): A Slightly ‘Irish’ Perspective, Gregory C G Moore Jan 2005

A Biographical Sketch Of William Edward Hearn (1826-1888): A Slightly ‘Irish’ Perspective, Gregory C G Moore

Business Conference Papers

William Edward Hearn was the first Australian economist of international note. His major publication in the discipline of economics, Plutology (1863), was praised by the leading economists of the late-nineteenth century, including W. S. Jevons, A. Marshall and F. Y. Edgeworth. In this paper I trace the way in which Hearn's early experiences in Ireland shaped his economic views. I argue that he was just as much an Irish economist as an Australian economist.

This Conference Paper has since been published as:

Gregory C G Moore, 'The Anglo-Irish context for William Edward Hearn's economic beliefs and the ultimate failure of …

Two Coastal Upwelling Domains In The Northern California Current System, Adriana Huyer, Jane H. Fleischbein, Julie Keister, P. Michael Kosro, Natalie Perlin, Robert L. Smith, Patricia A. Wheeler

Journal of Marine Research

A pair of hydrographic sections, one north and one south of Cape Blanco at 42.9N, was sampled in five summers (1998–2000 and 2002–2003). The NH line at 44.6N lies about 130 km south of the Columbia River, and spans a relatively wide shelf off Newport, Oregon. The CR line at 41.9N off Crescent City, California, lies 300 km farther south and spans a narrower shelf. Summer winds are predominantly southward in both locations but the southward winds are stronger on the CR line. Sampling included CTD/rosette casts (to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll), zooplankton net tows and continuous …
