Physiological Profile Of Olympic Style Tae Kwon Do Match, Georgios C. Korellis

Student Work

Olympic style Tae Kwon Do training may achieve accepted training intensity threshold for effective aerobic capacity training, energy expenditure thresholds and elevation in excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. Little work regarding the acute metabolic demands during Olympic style Tae Kwon Do competition has been done before. The purpose of this study was to examine the physiological demands of a match in Olympic style Tae Kwon Do. Physiological assessment included measurement of oxygen uptake (V 02), heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentration (BL), rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and body temperature (BT). A total of 7 subjects between the ages of 19 …

Computing Best-Possible Bounds For The Distribution Of A Sum Of Several Variables Is Np-Hard, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson Jun 2005

Computing Best-Possible Bounds For The Distribution Of A Sum Of Several Variables Is Np-Hard, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we know the probability distribution of two random variables x1 and x2, but we have no information about the correlation between x1 and x2; what are the possible probability distributions for the sum x1+x2? This question was originally raised by A. N. Kolmogorov. Algorithms exist that provide best-possible bounds for the distribution of x1+x2; these algorithms have been implemented as a part of the efficient software for handling probabilistic uncertainty. A natural question is: what if we have several (n>2) variables with known distribution, we have no information about their correlation, and we are interested …

Why Product Of Probabilities (Masses) For Independent Events? A Remark, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson Jun 2005

Why Product Of Probabilities (Masses) For Independent Events? A Remark, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For independent events A and B, the probability P(A&B) is equal to the product of the corresponding probabilities: P(A&B)=P(A)*P(B). It is well known that the product f(a,b)=a*b has the following property: once P(A1)+...+P(An)=1 and P(B1)+...+P(Bm)=1, the probabilities P(Ai&Bj)=f(P(Ai),P(Bj)) also add to 1: f(P(A1),P(B1))+...+f(P(An),P(Bm))=1. We prove that the product is the only function that satisfies this property, i.e., that if, vice versa, this property holds for some function f(a,b), then this function f is the product. This result provided an additional explanation of why for independent events, we multiply probabilities (or, in the Dempster-Shafer case, masses).

In this paper, we strengthen …

Antecedents, Moderators And Examples Of Representational Predicaments At Three Hong Kong Sites, Robin Stanley Snell, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

Employees suffer representational predicaments if they feel that they bear invisible burdens and/or make invisible contributions. This feeling implies a belief that dominant authorities in the organization are embracing unfavourable prevai1ing images of employees (PIEs) that are incongruent with salient work-life space domains. Qualitative interviews at an insurance agency branch and an on-line database provider indicated embedded human resource values characterized by aggressive instrumentality, small circle and top down govemance, and expectations of employee deference and silence. These values reflected the

Hong Kong human resource govemance environment: absence of labour rights and protections, and cultural assumptions of large power distance, …

Caring For Patients With Diabetes At Safety Net Hospitals And Health Systems: What The Patients Say About Their Care, Marsha Regenstein, Jennifer Huang, Dean Schillinger, Daniel Lessler, Brendan Reilly, Melanie Brunt, Jolene Johnson, John Piette

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In 2002, with support from The Commonwealth Fund, the National Public Health and Hospital Institute (NPHHI) created a consortium of safety net hospital systems to work together to address common concerns regarding the care of patients with diabetes. As part of that project, NPHHI conducted a survey of patients with diabetes who received at least some of their care from four Consortium hospital systems: Cambridge Health Alliance; Community Health Network of San Francisco/San Francisco General Hospital; Cook County Bureau of Health Services; and LSU/Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans. Patients were surveyed on multiple domains of care, including overall …

Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We present a simple, two- or three-step method for the synthesis of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole-based (OMCP) sensors for anions. Electrophilic aromatic substitution allows for converting the pyrrole moieties of OMCP into a dye. The formation of a sensor-anion complex results in partial charge transfer and a dramatic change in color. The absorption (UV-vis) and NMR titration experiments show that the chromogenic OMCPs sense anions administered as aqueous solutions, even at high ionic strength ( approximately 0.1 M NaCl), while displaying selectivity for pyrophosphate and carboxylate anions. The experiments with polyurethane sensor films show a strong response for aqueous carboxylates, such as …

Cu(I) Luminescence From The Tetranuclear Cu4s4 Cofactor Of A Synthetic 4-Helix Bundle, Olesya A. Kharenko, David C. Kennedy, Borries Demeler, Michael J. Maroney, Michael Y. Ogawa Jun 2005

Cu(I) Luminescence From The Tetranuclear Cu4s4 Cofactor Of A Synthetic 4-Helix Bundle, Olesya A. Kharenko, David C. Kennedy, Borries Demeler, Michael J. Maroney, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The addition of Cu(I) to the random-coil peptide, C16C19-GGY, produces a self-organized, metal-bridged 4-helix bundle which displays an intense room-temperature luminescence at 600 nm. Emission, UV, and CD titrations along with X-ray absorption studies indicate that the luminescent cofactor is likely a Cu4S4 cluster in which each Cu atom is bridged by the side chains of two cysteine residues and has terminal N/O ligation.

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Despite having a very low incidence of disease, reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are subject to tuberculosis (TB) testing requirements for interstate shipment and herd accreditation in the United States. Improved TB tests are desperately needed, as many reindeer are falsely classified as reactors by current testing procedures. Sera collected sequentially from 11 (experimentally) Mycobacterium bovis-infected reindeer and 4 noninfected reindeer were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting, and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA) for antibody specific to M. bovis antigens. Specific antibody was detected as early as 4 weeks after challenge with M. bovis. By MAPIA, sera …

High School Seniors’ Perceptions Of Career And Technical Education And Factors Influencing Their Decision To Attend An Area Career Technical Center, David P. Gaunt

Dissertations

This study explored the profile of CTE students with regard to their academic standing and their socioeconomic background, examined high school seniors'perceptions of career and technical education, and identified the people and other factors that influence students in their decision-making about CTE enrollment. A 29-question survey was administered to 451 seniors from seven public high schools served by the Wexford-Missaukee Area Career Technical Center, operated by an intermediate school district in northern lower Michigan.

Significant findings indicate that the typical profile of CTE students with respect to socioeconomic status and academic standing would identify a CTE student as performing somewhat …

The Effects Of Dextromethorphan On Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement, Thomas B. Morgan Jun 2005

The Effects Of Dextromethorphan On Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement, Thomas B. Morgan

Dissertations

The current study examined in 2-h sessions the effects of intraperitoneal injections of dextromethorphan (DM) (0.0, 40.0, 60.0, and 80.0 mg/kg) on the acquisition of lever-press responding in rats that were exposed to a two-lever procedure in which responses on the reinforcement lever (RL) were reinforced with food after a 15-s resetting delay and responses on the cancellation lever cancelled a scheduled reinforcer. Response acquisition was observed at all drug doses. A decrease in RL responses, food deliveries, and the number of subjects that acquired responding was observed at the highest dose of DM. All doses of DM increased latency …

Extreme Policy Makeover: Re-Evaluating Current U.S.-Vietnam Relations Under The International Religious Freedom Act, Kevin V. Tu Jun 2005

Extreme Policy Makeover: Re-Evaluating Current U.S.-Vietnam Relations Under The International Religious Freedom Act, Kevin V. Tu

Washington International Law Journal

Following the signing of the Paris Peace Accord in 1973, the relationship between the United States and Vietnam remained essentially frozen. In 2000, the signing of the United States-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement was an epic step in the normalization of relations. In addition, the BTA was hailed as a means of effectuating positive change in the area of Vietnam's human rights. Unfortunately, the state of religious freedom in Vietnam has deteriorated while economic ties with the United States have strengthened. Despite Vietnam's purported respect for religious freedom, violations continue. Vietnam restricts the practice of religion, detains religious leaders, and tolerates …
