Are The Millennium Development Goals (Mdgs) Feasible? Can The Deadlines Be Met Particularly For Education And Gender? The Case Of Ethiopia, Meskerem Shiferaw

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper addresses the feasibility of the MDGs in Ethiopia, in general and in particular Education and Gender issues in relation with the deadline of 2015 a target set by the UN millennium declaration. The paper will assess the possibility of achieving universal primary education by 2015 in Ethiopia, for all school age children. The role required by parents and the community, private sector and what has been so far to achieve these goals will be reviewed as a follow-up to my previous paper (educating the community, Western Michigan’s Ethiopian American Foundation International conference, 2003). Both for education and gender …

The Economics Of Rotating Savings And Credit Association: Evidence From Ethiopia, Abbi M. Kedir Jun 2005

The Economics Of Rotating Savings And Credit Association: Evidence From Ethiopia, Abbi M. Kedir

International Conference on African Development Archives

Using a unique individual level data on the membership of Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (ROSCAs) collected in 1994 from seven major urban centres in Ethiopia, we provide one of the few econometric tests of the economic theory of ROSCAs. In recognition of the heterogeneity of rosca types across space, we provide basic information about the characteristics of roscas in urban areas of Ethiopia. In addition, we use individual and household level data to describe the characteristics of both rosca participants and non-participants. The findings from the descriptive part of the analysis indicate that most of the rosca members are …

Concepts And Perspectives From The Economics Of Sustainable Development: Views Of Economists And Their Policy Implications For Ethiopia And The Rest Africa, Sisay Asefa

International Conference on African Development Archives

Sustainable development is a concept about the relationship between economic growth and the environment. The term was first used in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (also known as the Brundtland Commission for its Chair, Gro Harlem Brundtland). In the Commssion’s report, “our common Future”, it defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development 1987. The aim of this paper is to explore the various dimensions of sustainability from an economic perspective by focusing …

The article looks at the causes of large migratory movements in Haiti. Anthropologist Gérard Barthélemy suggests that emigration from the countryside stems from aspects of rural society, namely the need to accumulate wealth to start one’s own production unit and the need to chase out those who will not stick to and perpetuate the rules of the community. However, according to Jean Métellus and Jean-Claude Icart, migration movements are tightly linked to political and historical upheavals, which force people out of the country in search of safety and survival. For many migrants, the consequence is a feeling of loss and …

A Critical Role For Kalirin In Ngf Signaling Through Trka, Kausik Chakrabarti, Rong Lin, Noraisha I. Schiller, Yanping Wang, David Koubi, Ying-Xin Fan, Brian B. Rudkin, Gibbes R. Johnson, Martin R. Schiller Jun 2005

A Critical Role For Kalirin In Ngf Signaling Through Trka, Kausik Chakrabarti, Rong Lin, Noraisha I. Schiller, Yanping Wang, David Koubi, Ying-Xin Fan, Brian B. Rudkin, Gibbes R. Johnson, Martin R. Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Kalirin is a multidomain guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that activates Rho proteins, inducing cytoskeletal rearrangement in neurons. Although much is known about the effects of Kalirin on Rho GTPases and neuronal morphology, little is known about the association of Kalirin with the receptor/signaling systems that affect neuronal morphology. Our experiments demonstrate that Kalirin binds to and colocalizes with the TrkA neurotrophin receptor in neurons. In PC12 cells, inhibition of Kalirin expression using antisense RNA decreased nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced TrkA autophosphorylation and process extension. Kalirin overexpression potentiated neurotrophin-stimulated TrkA autophosphorylation and neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells at a low …

The Functions Of Centers And Institutes In Academic Biomedical Research, William T. Mallon, Sarah A. Bunton

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this Analysis in Brief, we report on the findings from a 2004 survey of directors of research centers and institutes located at research-intensive medical schools and their parent universities, who identified their unit’s primary mission as basic, clinical, or other type of research. While many assertions have been made about the functions that centers and institutes perform, or do not perform, our findings indicate that their missions and roles are varied, complex, and nuanced. The 604 research centers and institutes in the study conduct a variety of tasks. For the purposes of this analysis, we define “some effort” to …

A Study Of Student Perception And The Impact Of Requiring Community Service Of Undergraduate Students At Liberty University In Lynchburg, Virginia, Lew A. Weider

Faculty Dissertations

This study examined student perceptions and the impact of requiring community service at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Three hundred forty six students voluntarily participated in this study. Students were asked to respond to a 25 question online survey which attempted to ascertain four key questions. First, should Liberty University should continue to require community service of it students in order to graduate? Secondly, did the students perceive their required community service as a benefit to them personally as well as to those they served? The third question to be answered through this study was how the requirement to do …

Stand’S Proposal For Long-Term Monitoring Of Groundwater At Pantex, George Rice, Pam Allison, Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (Stand), Inc.

Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (STAND)

This report identifies wells that STAND believes should be included in a long-term monitoring plan for the Ogallala and perched aquifers at the Pantex Plant. Most of these wells already exist. To enable managing the (1) uncertainties that result from known data gaps and (2) the contaminant plume, STAND recommends installing a number of additional wells, which are prioritized in Table 1. Well locations are shown on accompanying maps (Figures 1 and 2 illustrating monitoring wells in Ogallala and perched aquifers, respectively).

Samples from all wells should be analyzed for metals, VOCs, SVOCs, high explosives, perchlorate, pesticides, herbicides, PCBs, and …

Creating Health And Abundance With Complementary Currencies, Victoria Temple Jun 2005

Creating Health And Abundance With Complementary Currencies, Victoria Temple

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper examines the ways in which the use of complementary currencies can help solve the current crisis in American health care and create abundance in the lives of those people who have been marginalized by both the prevailing health care and economic systems. It explores the positive effects that the use of these social currencies can have on the programs and financial stability of nonprofit health care organizations, as well as on the communities in which they operate. This paper looks at several implementations of complementary currencies in health care organizations, particularly those based on the Time Dollars model. …

The proliferation of fools in independent African nations’ capitals and major cities should have entailed profound analyses. The period after 1804 in Haiti and after 1960 for Africa is marked by irrationality. From this point of view, Aimé Césaire, doom prophet, uses the Haitian past to warn newly independent African nations. The attempt to understand the phenomena has so far been based on psychoanalysis and other euro-centric methods. In this paper, we will attempt to centre our approach on the gaze and thought of the lunatics themselves in order to understand the madness that has taken hold of post-colonial periods. …

Rationality, Tort Reform And Contingent Valuation: A Classroom Experiment In Starting Point Bias, Victor Matheson Jun 2005

Rationality, Tort Reform And Contingent Valuation: A Classroom Experiment In Starting Point Bias, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

This simple classroom experiment demonstrates the existence of starting point bias. Asked to place a dollar value on a non-market good such as the loss of a limb or the destruction of a wetland, students place a much smaller value on the loss if a small value is first suggested by the questioner while placing a significantly higher value on the loss when a large value is originally suggested. This experiment can be used in theory classes to demonstrate the limits of individual rationality or in applied classes in law or environmental economics in relation to tort reform or contingent …

Fiscal Federalism And Its Discontents: Theory And Policy, Abu Girma Moges Jun 2005

Fiscal Federalism And Its Discontents: Theory And Policy, Abu Girma Moges

International Conference on African Development Archives

A number of countries have pursued fiscal decentralization within a broad context of political and economic reforms to improve the performance of their public sector. Fiscal decentralization can potentially improve the allocation efficiency of the public sector and increase the capacity of a nation to address its pressing economic, social and political problems. The sustainability of such an approach is conditioned by the existence of effective democratic institutions and implementation capabilities. When political imperatives dictate the adoption of fiscal decentralization, however, the process would confront problems of the commons, capacity constraints and externalities that would limit the potential efficiency gains …

Pets Or Meat, Mary Anne Case Jun 2005

Pets Or Meat, Mary Anne Case

Chicago-Kent Law Review

I am interested in exploring questions of whether and when commingling commodification with affection is more problematic than naked commodification. My title comes from the scene in the Michael Moore film Roger and Me depicting the marketing of rabbits. The dynamic I am interested in is common, not only in human relations with other animals, from lab and farm animals to pets, but also in pink collar work. The secretary given flowers instead of a bonus, the housekeeper whose employers say of her, "she's one of the family"—each of these cases is troubling, although it is not clear that more …
