To Love To Survive: Culture And Maternal Sentiment In Brazil, Elizabeth Farfan Jul 2005

To Love To Survive: Culture And Maternal Sentiment In Brazil, Elizabeth Farfan

Sociology & Anthropology Student Works

This paper examines the cultural construction of maternal sentiment on Ilha de Maré, and attempts to describe the social reality of mothers on the island; the social conditions in which they live, their work, their kinship networks, and the ways in which they define motherhood. I will attempt to portray a mother s love as defined by a marezeira (woman of Ilha de Maré); to illustrate how maternal sentiment manifests itself for a woman facing scarcity and multiple jobs under difficult working conditions, and for whom, no matter how poor, young, or overworked, the responsibility of loving, educating, feeding, and …

This literature has been collected through searching library holdings, Computer Assisted Research Search, and online searching. The criteria against which the literature is to be reviewed and analyzed are in the form of questions and are divided into six categories of introduction, theoretical framework, method, results, discussion (conclusion/recommendations), and abstract or summary; so that all the aspects of a study can be examined. A Pilot Study Considering The Impact Of Husband's Internet Based Pornography Use Upon Marital Adjustment, Satisfaction, And Intimacy Within A Clinical Sample., Anthony T. Alonzo

Theses and Dissertations

With increased access and use of pornography over the internet, the association between pornography use and marital distress needed to be examined in a quantitative manner. There was a need to discover if, and or how, marital relationships are impacted by internet pornography use. Assessment instruments were used to measure internet pornography use (Internet Sex Screen Test revised for pornography), marital adjustment (Marital Adjustment Test items #1 and #14), marital satisfaction (Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale), and marital intimacy (Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships). The results of this study suggested the following; there was a significant positive relationship between the …

Tauser Killed Both Dogs And Other Suburban American Family Folklore, Kristina Whitley Gashler Jul 2005

Tauser Killed Both Dogs And Other Suburban American Family Folklore, Kristina Whitley Gashler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to answer the questions "What purposes do family pets and the narratives we tell about them serve in modern American society?" and "What do these stories tell us about what Americans value and about where we locate our ‘value center’?" In Chapter 1, I discuss how Americans define loyalty in our pets now that our animals generally no longer help us work. I conclude that since the shift from agricultural to suburban settings, animals prove their loyalty individually and in human-like ways, rather than as "good" members of their own species, but at the same time because …

Tgf-Β Maintains Dormancy Of Prostatic Stem Cells In The Proximal Region Of Ducts, Sarah N. Salm, Patricia E. Burger, Sandra Coetzee, Ken Goto, David Moscatelli, E. Lynette Wilson Jul 2005

Tgf-Β Maintains Dormancy Of Prostatic Stem Cells In The Proximal Region Of Ducts, Sarah N. Salm, Patricia E. Burger, Sandra Coetzee, Ken Goto, David Moscatelli, E. Lynette Wilson

Publications and Research

We have previously shown that prostatic stem cells are located in the proximal region of mouse prostatic ducts. Here, we show that this region responds differently to transforming growth factor (TGF)-β than the distal ductal region and that under physiological conditions androgens and TGF-β are crucial overall regulators of prostatic tissue homeostasis. This conclusion is supported by the observations showing that high levels of TGF-β signaling are present in the quiescent proximal region of ducts in an androgen-replete animal and that cells in this region overexpress Bcl-2, which protects them from apoptosis. Moreover, androgen ablation reverses the proximal-distal TGF-β signaling …

Exclusive electroproduction of φ mesons has been studied in e±p collisions at √s = 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 65.1 pb-1. The γ* p cross section is presented in the kinematic range 2 GeV2 < Q2 < 70 GeV2, 35 GeV < W < 145 GeV and t < 0.6 GeV2. The cross sections as functions of Q2, W, t and helicity angle θh are compared to cross sections for other vector mesons. The ratios R of the cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarized virtual photons are presented as functions of Q2 and W. The data are also compared to predictions from theoretical models. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Teacher Who Changed My Life
Last year, we invited our readers to submit essays on the topic of “The Teacher Who Changed My Life.” For months we received tributes to teachers spanning 60 years of classes and every academic discipline. Touching and inspiring, humorous and heartfelt, these submissions were testament to the depth of the Holy Cross experience and the ability of faculty to transform students. Read our seven selections and reflect, once again, on the teachers who have made a difference in your own life.

Childbirth And Breastfeeding Over Three Decades: One Mother’S Story, Hila Spear

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes one mother's selected childbirth and breastfeeding experiences that transpired over the span of three decades. Her story is a source of inspiration and encouragement for breastfeeding mothers and health-care professionals who provide maternity care for today's childbearing women. Furthermore, this personal account reveals that, although breastfeeding support and childbirth services have improved over the past 30 years, more needs to be done to promote positive birth experiences and breastfeeding outcomes.
