Triangulation Between Elderly Parents And Adult Children, Ryan J. Anderson Jul 2005

Triangulation Between Elderly Parents And Adult Children, Ryan J. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the extent of triangulation between elderly people and their adult children, and examines the relationship of triangulation with marital and individual outcomes such as problem solving, negative affective communication, time spent together, intimacy, depression, and marital satisfaction. Triangulation between adult children and elderly parents was found to be strongly related with negative outcomes for elderly parents in each of the dependent variables.

Betty Durham Owens Oral History, Betty Durham Owens, Courtney Tollison

Furman University Oral Histories

Betty Durham Owens, born in 1934, grew up near Furman's old campus in downtown Greenville, and in this 2004 oral history audio, she shares some of her memories associated with Furman. She talks about playing on the old campus as a child, roller skating in front of the library, going into the Bell Tower, as well as the beauty of Furman during that time. She mentions "the Plyler boys," and remembers the house of their father, President John Plyler. Betty married a Furman student, and she discusses life in married-student housing at Furman in the 1950's. Betty talks about her …

Effective Steps To Creating Parent/Teacher Partnerships In Special Education, Danielle Jeanne Bundy Jul 2005

Effective Steps To Creating Parent/Teacher Partnerships In Special Education, Danielle Jeanne Bundy

Theses and Graduate Projects

While the value of the parent/teacher partnership is universally accepted, it is not always easy to promote or maintain. The purpose of this study was to identify the effective steps to creating parent/teacher partnerships in special education, in order to plan a curriculum that was more response to children's needs. For the purpose of this study a multi-method qualitative approach was used, which included participant observation, questionnaires, and analysis of field notes. The results of this study revealed a complex set of issues related to interactions between parents and special education professionals within the school setting which included: (a) Listen …

Gps Velocity Field In The Transition From Subduction To Collision Of The Eastern Sunda And Banda Arcs, Indonesia, Hendro Nugroho Jul 2005

Gps Velocity Field In The Transition From Subduction To Collision Of The Eastern Sunda And Banda Arcs, Indonesia, Hendro Nugroho

Theses and Dissertations

Campaign GPS measurements during 2001-2003 in the transition between subduction and collision of the Banda arc reveal how strain is partitioned away from the trench and distributed to other parts of the arc-trench system. Genrich, et. al. (1996) conducted a GPS campaign (1992-1994) throughout the Eastern Sunda and Banda arcs that demonstrated partial accretion of the arc to the Australian plate. We reoccupied many of the sites from this earlier study and 7 additional stations, 3 of which are new benchmarks. Our study shortened many baselines and extended the observation epoch to ten years for many key stations. The resulting …

Microbial And Chemical Affects On Leachate From Calcareous Soils Treated With Wastewater Effluent, Craig M. Paul Jul 2005

Microbial And Chemical Affects On Leachate From Calcareous Soils Treated With Wastewater Effluent, Craig M. Paul

Theses and Dissertations

Increasing human populations are placing greater strain on water resources, prompting the use of treated wastewater effluent for irrigation in some areas, including the desert regions of the Western United States. To determine the potential effects of using secondary effluent for irrigation, we applied wastewater effluent and irrigation waters to natural and artificially constructed calcareous soils in greenhouse and field lysimeters, and in soil columns. The leachate from one field lysimeter contained increased fecal coliform counts than the effluent. Leachate coliform counts were decreased or not significantly changed in two field lysimeters. Electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), chloride …

From International Law To Law And Globalization, Paul Schiff Berman Jul 2005

From International Law To Law And Globalization, Paul Schiff Berman

ExpressO

International law’s traditional emphasis on state practice has long been questioned, as scholars have paid increasing attention to other important – though sometimes inchoate – processes of international norm development. Yet, the more recent focus on transnational law, governmental and non-governmental networks, and judicial influence and cooperation across borders, while a step in the right direction, still seems insufficient to describe the complexities of law in an era of globalization. Accordingly, it is becoming clear that “international law” is itself an overly constraining rubric and that we need an expanded framework, one that situates cross-border norm development at the intersection …

G-Computation Estimation Of Nonparametric Causal Effects On Time-Dependent Mean Outcomes In Longitudinal Studies, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jul 2005

G-Computation Estimation Of Nonparametric Causal Effects On Time-Dependent Mean Outcomes In Longitudinal Studies, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Two approaches to Causal Inference based on Marginal Structural Models (MSM) have been proposed. They provide different representations of causal effects with distinct causal parameters. Initially, a parametric MSM approach to Causal Inference was developed: it relies on correct specification of a parametric MSM. Recently, a new approach based on nonparametric MSM was introduced. This later approach does not require the assumption of a correctly specified MSM and thus is more realistic if one believes that correct specification of a parametric MSM is unlikely in practice. However, this approach was described only for investigating causal effects on mean outcomes collected …
