Restoration Of An International River Basin, Alfredo Martinez Jul 2005

Restoration Of An International River Basin, Alfredo Martinez

2005

The Rio Grande River flows from its headwaters in southern Colorado, south through New Mexico, turning southeast at El Paso, Texas, where it becomes the international boundary between the United States and Mexico until it drains into the Gulf of Mexico. The Rio Grande is a “National Historic River.” The Rio Grande is managed according to interstate and international agreements that apportion its water through the operation of reservoirs and diversion systems. Downstream of Elephant Butte Reservoir, New Mexico the waters of the Rio Grande are used primarily by irrigators on both sides of the border. The City of El …

Stream Restoration Research Along Blue Hen Creek At The University Of Delaware Experimental Watershed, Gerald Kauffman

2005

Undergraduate and graduate students conducted research into experimental stream restoration techniques along Blue Hen Creek. This 200-acre headwater tributary flows for a mile through the University of Delaware Experimental Watershed before entering the White Clay Creek National Wild and Scenic River in Newark, Delaware. The objective of the research was to evaluate stream restoration techniques that would 1) work well along small tributaries (less than 5 square miles) in the hilly, rocky piedmont of northern Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania, 2) be low cost making use of native materials such as onsite rocks and trees, and 3) have low technology demands …

China's Proposed Anti-Monopoly Law, Pamela Bookman Jul 2005

China's Proposed Anti-Monopoly Law, Pamela Bookman

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr Antitrust Series

Well-designed competition policy can promote consumer welfare and economic growth. Poorly designed policy can retard both. As China’s importance in the world economy grows steadily each year, so does the importance of its competition policy. Because China is a low-cost manufacturing center and home to an enormous market, foreign companies have invested in China extensively, including through joint ventures with Chinese companies that involve sharing the foreign companies’ intellectual property rights with their Chinese partners.

The Association Between Changes In Body Fat, Body Weight And Serum C-Reactive Protein: A Prospective Study, Benjamin Thomas Bikman Jul 2005

The Association Between Changes In Body Fat, Body Weight And Serum C-Reactive Protein: A Prospective Study, Benjamin Thomas Bikman

Theses and Dissertations

Objective- To investigate the extent to which changes in body fat percentage (BF%) and weight (BW) relate to changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) in women, while statistically controlling for possible confounders, such as age, initial body weight, and menopause status.

Methods and Results- A cohort of 150 free-living subjects was followed prospectively over a 2½-year period. BF% was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), while BW was determined with a calibrated, electronic scale. There was no significant relationship between changes in BF% and CRP, regardless of age, initial BW, and menopause status. However, changes in BW were predictive of …

Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Links Nf-Κb To Pge2 In Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Altered Fibroblast In-Vitro Wound Healing, Yi Jia, John Turek Jul 2005

Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Links Nf-Κb To Pge2 In Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Altered Fibroblast In-Vitro Wound Healing, Yi Jia, John Turek

Department of Basic Medical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: This study investigated mechanisms of altered fibroblast collagen production induced by polyunsaturated fatty acids. 3T3-Swiss fibroblasts were grown in medium containing either eicosapentaenoic or arachidonic acid. The effects of nuclear factor-kappaB activation by lipopolysaccharide on inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, collagen production, and in-vitro wound healing were studied. Results: Eicosapentaenoic acid treated cells produced less prostaglandin E2 but had increased inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, nitric oxide production, collagen formation, and recoverage area during in-vitro wound healing than cells treated with arachidonic acid. Activation of nuclear factor-kappaB with lipopolysaccharide increased inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, the …

Soft Drink Consumption And Changes In Body Composition In 170 Women: A 4-Year Prospective Study, Jared Michael Tucker Jul 2005

Soft Drink Consumption And Changes In Body Composition In 170 Women: A 4-Year Prospective Study, Jared Michael Tucker

Theses and Dissertations

Background: In recent history, there have been significant increases in both soft drink consumption and the prevalence of obesity throughout the developed world. To help curb the obesity epidemic, a better understanding of the behaviors contributing to weight and fat gain is vital.

Objective: To examine the extent to which soft drink consumption is predictive of changes in body composition in middle-aged women over a 4-year period, while statistically controlling for age, energy intake, physical activity, and menopause status.

Design: A prospective cohort design over 48 months with no intervention. Self-reported soft drink consumption was used to predict changes in …

Broadening The Holistic Mindset: Incorporating Collateral Consequences And Reentry Into Criminal Defense Lawyering, Michael Pinard Jul 2005

Broadening The Holistic Mindset: Incorporating Collateral Consequences And Reentry Into Criminal Defense Lawyering, Michael Pinard

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, Professor Michael Pinard highlights the holistic model of criminal defense representation, which seeks to address the myriad issues that often lead to the client’s involvement with the criminal justice system with the overarching goal of providing a comprehensive solution to those underlying factors. While lauding these developments, however, Professor Pinard argues that the holistic model has largely overlooked two facets of the criminal justice system that impact greatly the client’s life once the formal representation has concluded: the collateral consequences of criminal convictions and reentry. Professor Pinard explores the emerging attention devoted to these two components, but …

Sibling Influence On Adolescent Cigarette, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Benjamin G. Gibbs Jul 2005

Sibling Influence On Adolescent Cigarette, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Benjamin G. Gibbs

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to estimate the association between sibling drug use and adolescent alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use. Research is conducted using survey data from a probability sample of 4,987 adolescents in grades 9–12 in Utah. To account for the limited frequency of drug use among respondents, Poisson regression is used to estimate models for each type of drug. In support of current literature, findings indicate that having a sibling who uses drugs increases the frequency of drug use substantially, even when peer influences are taken into account. Significant sibling associations with adolescent drug use found in …

Materialism, Perceived Financial Problems, And Marital Satisfaction, Lukas R. Dean Jul 2005

Materialism, Perceived Financial Problems, And Marital Satisfaction, Lukas R. Dean

Theses and Dissertations

While there has been a relatively large number of studies conducted to investigate associations between financial problems and marital outcomes, little research has been done to examine possible relationships between materialistic attitudes, perceived financial problems, and marital outcomes. This study has been designed to examine a conceptual model linking materialism, perceived financial problems, and relationship satisfaction among married couples. Data obtained from 600 married heterosexual couples who took the RELATE test fit the model well. Findings indicate that wives' materialism is negatively related to husbands' marital satisfaction. Husbands' and wives' materialism is positively related with increased perception of financial problems …

An Examination Of Family Communication Within The Core And Balance Model Of Family Leisure Functioning, Kevin M. Smith Jul 2005

An Examination Of Family Communication Within The Core And Balance Model Of Family Leisure Functioning, Kevin M. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine family communication within the Core and Balance Model of Family Leisure Functioning. This was accomplished using path analysis, specifically using a mediator model. Family leisure was measured using the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP), family functioning using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES II), and family communication using the Family Communication Scale (FCS). The sample was youth (n = 90) and parents (n = 123) from 25 different states in the US. Family leisure involvement predicted family functioning variables from the youth and family perspectives, but only partially from the …
