Is The Party Over? Unmarried Fatherhood And Drug And Alcohol Use, Jonathan A. Jarvis Jul 2005

Is The Party Over? Unmarried Fatherhood And Drug And Alcohol Use, Jonathan A. Jarvis

Theses and Dissertations

Using waves two and three of the National Survey of Adolescent Males (1990 and 1995) I examine the effects of marriage, paternity and father involvement on the use of drugs and alcohol by young men. Despite the importance of fatherhood as an adult role, I argue that commitment to the role of fatherhood and not paternity itself is what alters behavior. I hypothesize that young men who assume responsibility for fathering their children are more likely to reduce their drug and alcohol use over time than young men who father children but do not assume the role of parent. Results …

The Effect Of A Study Abroad On Acquiring Pragmatics, Johanna Katherine Brown Jul 2005

The Effect Of A Study Abroad On Acquiring Pragmatics, Johanna Katherine Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Pragmatics in Arabic needs to be studied for two main reasons: first, the large cultural difference between American and Middle Eastern society; and second, the recent surge in demand for Arabic speakers in the US. Especially in regard to refusals, what is acceptable in America is rarely acceptable in Arabic speaking countries. There are very few occasions when refusal of an offering of food or other hospitalities is acceptable. Arab culture requires one to provide family members with anything they need, including money. If that is not possible it is required to find the means for what they need. American …

Detection Of Trypanosomes In Small Ruminants And Pigs In Western Kenya: Important Reservoirs In The Epidemiology Of Sleeping Sickness?, Musa O. Ng'ayo, Zablon K. Njiru, Eucharia U. Kenya, Geoffrey M. Muluvi, Ellie O. Osir, Daniel K. Masiga Jul 2005

Detection Of Trypanosomes In Small Ruminants And Pigs In Western Kenya: Important Reservoirs In The Epidemiology Of Sleeping Sickness?, Musa O. Ng'ayo, Zablon K. Njiru, Eucharia U. Kenya, Geoffrey M. Muluvi, Ellie O. Osir, Daniel K. Masiga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Trypanosomosis is a major impediment to livestock farming in sub-Saharan Africa and limits the full potential of agricultural development in the 36 countries where it is endemic. In man, sleeping sickness is fatal if untreated and causes severe morbidity. This study was undertaken in western Kenya, an area that is endemic for both human and livestock trypanosomosis. While trypanosomosis in livestock is present at high levels of endemicity, sleeping sickness occurs at low levels over long periods, interspersed with epidemics, underscoring the complexity of the disease epidemiology. In this study, we sought to investigate the prevalence of trypanosomes in …

Specialty Hospitals: Can General Hospitals Compete?, Laura A. Dummit Jul 2005

Specialty Hospitals: Can General Hospitals Compete?, Laura A. Dummit

National Health Policy Forum

The rapid increase in specialty cardiac, surgical, and orthopedic hospitals has captured the attention of general hospitals and policymakers. Although the number of specialty hospitals remains small in absolute terms, their entry into certain health care markets has fueled arguments about the rules of “fair” competition among health care providers. To allow the smoke to clear, Congress effectively stalled the growth in new specialty hospitals by temporarily prohibiting physicians from referring Medicare or Medicaid patients to specialty hospitals in which they had an ownership interest. During this 18-month moratorium, which expired June 8, 2005, two mandated studies of specialty hospitals …

Democracy And Corruption, Devendra Raj Panday Jul 2005

Democracy And Corruption, Devendra Raj Panday

Liberal Democracy Nepal Bulletin

In order to have clean, impartial, and effective governance, one needs to go beyond the domain of the state for initiating reform. Much work needs to be done at the societal level on the issues of values and norms. Such work should be the responsibility of social leaders trusted by the people. Only social leaders can talk about higher motives and goals beyond what a personal utility maximizing political and economic man or woman (including the king) does, and inspire the society. Unfortunately, in the age of politics and power and consultants and experts, social leadership is a vanishing vocation.

An Energy-Efficient Media Access Control Protocol For Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu Wang, Chang Wen Chen Jul 2005

An Energy-Efficient Media Access Control Protocol For Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu Wang, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present in this paper an energy efficient media access control (MAC) protocol for chain-type wireless sensor networks. The chain-type sensor networks are fundamentally different from traditional sensor networks in that the sensor nodes in this class of networks are deployed along narrow and elongated geographical areas and form a chain-type topology. Recently, we have successfully developed hierarchical network architecture, sensor deployment strategy, and corresponding network initialization and operation protocols for this class of sensor networks. In this paper, we present a novel TDMA scheduling protocol that takes full advantages of the available channel reuse inherent in the chain-type sensor …

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra Jul 2005

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191–196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under similar environmental conditions without mating exposure. Bulls were observed during mating and assessed for breeding soundness and changes following mating. Bulls used for breeding (UFB) lost 77 kg …

Genetic Analysis Of Conserved Residues In Phou Of Escherichia Coli, Stewart G. Gardner Jul 2005

Genetic Analysis Of Conserved Residues In Phou Of Escherichia Coli, Stewart G. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The Pho regulon is controlled by the PstSCAB transporter, PhoU, and the two-component proteins, PhoB and PhoR. PhoU is a negative regulator of the Pho regulon under phosphate-replete conditions. How PhoU functions is unknown. Many PhoU homologues are found widely throughout prokaryotic domains. There are several conserved amino acid residues in the PhoU protein. It is hypothesized that these residues play an important role in the function of PhoU. To test this hypothesis, several site directed mutations in the phoU gene have been produced with single amino acid changes in conserved residues. After testing these mutants, it was found that …

Strain, Personality Traits, And Deviance Among Adolescents: Moderating Factors, Jennifer J. Wareham Jul 2005

Strain, Personality Traits, And Deviance Among Adolescents: Moderating Factors, Jennifer J. Wareham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

General strain theory has received a fair amount of empirical support and theoretical elaboration over the past several years. Since the introduction of general strain theory, Agnew and others have attempted to increase the comprehensiveness of the processes involved in strain theory. Until recently, the general strain theory literature has ignored what Agnew and associates (Agnew, Brezina, Wright, & Cullen, 2002) argue may be one of the most important conditioning effects of the strain-crime relationship, namely the dispositions or personality traits of the individual experiencing strain. Recently, Agnew and associates (2002) published results from a study examining the conditioning effects …

Time Efficiency In Computer Assisted Direct Observation Of Physical Activity Using Sofit, Trisha Anderson Jul 2005

Time Efficiency In Computer Assisted Direct Observation Of Physical Activity Using Sofit, Trisha Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Having valid and reliable methods for assessing physical activity levels is critical to understanding physical activity patterns. Direct observation is a widely used technique for obtaining contextually rich data on physical activity levels in physical education classes. One major limitation of direct observation is that it is time intensive. The use of digital video editing software programs may lessen the amount of time needed to gather the data. The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of time needed to obtain SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time) physical activity data using the traditional paper and pencil method …
