An Examination Of The Five Factors Of Personality, Pubertal Onset And Alcohol Usage In Adolescent Males, Sarah Wickman Dec 2005

An Examination Of The Five Factors Of Personality, Pubertal Onset And Alcohol Usage In Adolescent Males, Sarah Wickman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recent national surveys have demonstrated an increase in alcohol use among adolescents over the past five years (Johnston, O'Malley, & Bachman, 2003; Kann et al., 2000). It is important to understand factors that influence alcohol use in order to aid in the creation of preventative measures due to the many possible negative consequences associated with drinking alcohol (i.e., unwanted sexual activity, delinquency, abuse of other drugs, violence, car accidents, and poor academic performance) (Boyd, Howard, & Zucker, 1995). Two factors that have been studied as possible predictors of adult and adolescent alcohol use are personality and pubertal onset. Specifically, studies …

“Texts Memorized, Texts Performed: A Reconsideration Of The Role Of Paritta In Sri Lankan Monastic Education.”, Jeffrey Samuels Dec 2005

“Texts Memorized, Texts Performed: A Reconsideration Of The Role Of Paritta In Sri Lankan Monastic Education.”, Jeffrey Samuels

Philosophy & Religion Faculty Publications

During the past twenty years there has been a growing interest in monastic education within the larger field of Buddhist studies. Within the last ten years in particular, a number of monographs and articles examining the training and education of monks in Korea (Buswell [1992]), Tibet/India (Dreyfus [2003]), Thailand/Laos (Collins [1990], McDaniel [2002, 2003]), and Sri Lanka (Blackburn [1999a, 1999b, 2001] Samuels [2002]), have been published. Many of those works have paid particular attention to the texts used in monastic training, as well as to how the information contained in those very texts is imparted to and embodied by monks …

The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick Dec 2005

The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Throughout the United States, many areas exceed the level of safe ground ozone (O3) concentration. Non-natural emissions made as result of daily human activities and natural emissions react photochemically to produce ground O3 concentration. Variation in ground O3 concentration is controlled by local and regional emissions, synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, and boundary layer chemistry and dynamics. When the right meteorological variables are present, rural areas can have unhealthy air conditions with high levels of ground O3 concentration similar to that of metropolitan areas. Particular ground O3 concentration episodes were analyzed to summarize what meteorological variables constitute a healthy or hazardous …

Community Participation In Mine Action: A Review And Conceptual Framework, Ruth Bottomley Dec 2005

Community Participation In Mine Action: A Review And Conceptual Framework, Ruth Bottomley

Global CWD Repository

In line with the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) international strategy, which promotes a rights-based partnership approach, the NPA is committed to exploring new approaches to mine action that promote greater involvement of the local mine affected populations. A starting point in this process is a review and conceptual framework paper prepared for NPA by Ruth Bottomley. Through a review of existing documents, the paper provides a reflection on why community participation is important in mine action and outlines some of the challenges. Existing examples of community participation in mine action are compiled with documented strengths and weaknesses.

Testing The European Dream: Social Ideals And Cultural Realities In A Unified Europe, Lindsay Jorgensen Dec 2005

Testing The European Dream: Social Ideals And Cultural Realities In A Unified Europe, Lindsay Jorgensen

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

This paper addresses the viability of the European Dream proposed by Jeremy Rifkin through an examination of the tension resulting from cross-cultural acts of violence. Using primary sources and reactions to these events in the press, I show the inadequacy of Rifkin’s theory to address certain aspects of European reality. Centering on the case of Germany, I then explore depictions of the European Dream and of the obstacles faced by non-Germans in pursuing that dream in a variety of texts by immigrant and minority authors. These case studies enable a closer inquiry into the structural flaws, the theoretical and practical …

Final Report - Effectiveness Of The Perched Aquifer Pump And Treat System, Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (Stand), Inc. Dec 2005

Final Report - Effectiveness Of The Perched Aquifer Pump And Treat System, Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (Stand), Inc.

Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (STAND)

This is an evaluation of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) report: Annual Report in Support of Compliance Plan No. CP-50284-0001. This evaluation was performed for STAND, an organization of concerned citizens.

The Annual Report contains little original information. It briefly summarizes information contained in other DOE reports regarding clean-up activities at Pantex. It does not present a thorough analysis of the effectiveness of DOE’s clean-up activities. Because of this lack of information, DOE’s quarterly reports of analytical results2 were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of one of the major clean-up systems at Pantex - the perched aquifer pump and treat …

Foreign Investment And Disparities In Economic Development And Poverty Reduction: A Comparative-Historical Analysis Of The Buddhist Countries Of Southeast Asia, Harold Kerbo Dec 2005

Foreign Investment And Disparities In Economic Development And Poverty Reduction: A Comparative-Historical Analysis Of The Buddhist Countries Of Southeast Asia, Harold Kerbo

Social Sciences

To remain economically competitive in the 21st century a nation must be able to secure resources beyond its borders and protect itself from other nations trying to do the same. While the situation has been shown to be more complex, the original assumption among world system researchers remains that multinational corporate penetration in the periphery can have negative effects on their prospects for economic development. But we now know that these negative effects upon long-term economic development can be prevented. The existence of a strong development state can be critical for this protection. In addition to supplying ‘good governance’ (as …

Representation Of Lexical Form: Evidence From Studies Of Sublexical Ambiguity, Conor T. Mclennan, Paul A. Luce, Jan Charles Luce Dec 2005

Representation Of Lexical Form: Evidence From Studies Of Sublexical Ambiguity, Conor T. Mclennan, Paul A. Luce, Jan Charles Luce

Psychology Faculty Publications

The authors examined the role of intermediate, sublexical representations in spoken word perception. In particular, they tested whether flaps, which are neutralized allophones of intervocalic /t/s and /d/s, map onto their underlying phonemic counterparts. In 2 shadowing tasks, the authors found that flaps primed their carefully articulated counterparts, and vice versa. Because none of the flapped stimuli were lexically ambiguous (e.g., between rater and raider), these results provide evidence that such priming is sublexically mediated. Therefore, the current study provides further insights into when underlying form-based representations are activated during spoken word processing. In particular, the authors argue that phonological …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Identification And Functional Characterization Of Arabidopsis Peroxin4 And The Interacting Protein Peroxin22, Bethany Zolman, Melanie Monroe-Augustus, Illeana Silva, Bonnie Bartel Dec 2005

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Identification And Functional Characterization Of Arabidopsis Peroxin4 And The Interacting Protein Peroxin22, Bethany Zolman, Melanie Monroe-Augustus, Illeana Silva, Bonnie Bartel

Biology Department Faculty Works

Peroxins are genetically defined as proteins necessary for peroxisome biogenesis. By screening for reduced response to indole-3-butyric acid, which is metabolized to active auxin in peroxisomes, we isolated an Arabidopsis thaliana peroxin4 (pex4) mutant. This mutant displays sucrose-dependent seedling development and reduced lateral root production, characteristics of plant peroxisome malfunction. We used yeast two-hybrid analysis to determine that PEX4, an apparent ubiquitinconjugating enzyme, interacts with a previously unidentified Arabidopsis protein, PEX22. A pex4 pex22 double mutant enhanced pex4 defects, confirming that PEX22 is a peroxin. Expression of both Arabidopsis genes together complemented yeast pex4 or pex22 mutant defects, whereas expression …

Désir Et Impuissance Dans Halfaouine Et Bye-Bye, Scott Homler Dec 2005

Désir Et Impuissance Dans Halfaouine Et Bye-Bye, Scott Homler

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The experience of adolescence and the trials of Arab and Beur masculinity are explored in the films of Férid Boughédir and Karim Dridi in order to reveal the psychology and the politics of masculinity in evolution. Studying two films, Halfaouine and Bye-Bye, as well as the autobiography of Abdelkébir Khatibi entitled La mémoire tatouée, we see that they reflect a number of discursive stages of an emergent identity of protest that is based on flight and self-destruction.

Non-Apprenticeship Vet Courses : Participation, Persistence And Subsequent Pathways., Julie Mcmillan, Sheldon Rothman, Nicole Wernert

LSAY Research Reports

This report examines recent school leavers who commenced non-apprenticeship VET courses in Australia during the late 1990s. The focus is on the early post-school years, up to age 20. The report has two broad aims: to describe the educational, training and labour market pathways of non-apprenticeship VET course entrants; and to identify factors associated with persistence in non-apprenticeship VET courses. The report uses data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) to address each of these aims. The findings are based upon a sample of young people who had been in Year 9 in 1995 and who commenced a …
