Evaluating Marriage: Does Marriage Matter To The Nurturing Of Children?, Robin Fretwell Wilson Aug 2005

Evaluating Marriage: Does Marriage Matter To The Nurturing Of Children?, Robin Fretwell Wilson

San Diego Law Review

The state offers marriage legal and financial support. This article questions whether the state is justified in supporting and promoting marriage by looking at recent studies that found that marriage produces differences in investment and well-being for children in marital households compared to other children. These studies isolated the value of marriage and identified the connection, if any, between supporting marriage and supporting children. The Manning and Lamb study evaluated outcomes for children in non-marital households, whereas, the Hoefferth and Anderson study examined different investments in marital and non-marital children by biological fathers. The two studies found a marriage advantage, …

The Meaning Of Marriage: State Efforts To Facilitate Friendship, Love, And Childrearing, Richard Arneson Aug 2005

The Meaning Of Marriage: State Efforts To Facilitate Friendship, Love, And Childrearing, Richard Arneson

San Diego Law Review

The Prioritarian Consequentialist approaches state regulation of marriage from a standpoint opposed to the Lockean Libertarian natural rights tradition. The prioritarian approach favors state regulation of marriage that induces people to make positive cost-benefit arrangements, whereas the lockean avers any coercive restriction of people's liberty. Taking a prioritarian consequentialist perspective, this article discusses the appropriate state policy regarding private relationships involving love, sex, and childrearing, and assesses the meaning of marriage and possible alterations to marriage that would lead to consequences on the quality of human life. The prioritarian consequentialist supports state policies that produce the best outcome for people's …

Who's Afraid Of Polygamous Marriage? Lessons For Same-Sex Marriage Advocacy From The History Of Polygamy, Cheshire Calhoun Aug 2005

Who's Afraid Of Polygamous Marriage? Lessons For Same-Sex Marriage Advocacy From The History Of Polygamy, Cheshire Calhoun

San Diego Law Review

Attention to polygamy can strengthen the case for same-sex marriage. Both the historical debate on polygamy and the current debate on same-sex marriage concentrate on finding the best social response for the failure of conventional marriage to serve its purpose. The argument for traditional marriage conflicts with the Judeo-Christian tradition and a liberal democracy. Contrary to traditionalist arguments, polygamy and pluralistic relationships are a part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Additionally, a liberal democracy is designed to protect an individual?s right to pursue a pluralistic way of life. Under a liberal theory, the state should remain neutral and allow individuals to …

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Study Design: Two-factor mixed-design study, with factors including group (control and noncoper) and task (sidestep, crossover, and straight).

Objectives: To compare the knee and hip joint angles and moments of control subjects and subjects with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficient knee classified as noncopers, during a sidestep, crossover, and straight-ahead task.

Background: Subjects with ACL deficiency primarily note difficulty with cutting tasks as opposed to straight-ahead tasks. Yet, previous studies have primarily focused on straight-ahead tasks.

Methods and Measures: Fifteen subjects with ACL deficiency classified as noncopers, based on the number of giving-way episodes (1) and global question of …

Healthcare Resources For Older Adults In A Medium Sized Community, Ashley Nielson Aug 2005

Healthcare Resources For Older Adults In A Medium Sized Community, Ashley Nielson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Healthcare has become a large concern for a number of older Americans. With increases in healthcare costs and complex programs such as, Medicare, Medicaid, Medigap insurance policies and community programs, many older Americans are left worrying where they will find the money and resources to provide for themselves and their healthcare needs. Medicare, Medicaid and community care resources help to offset individual healthcare costs, but they are often not enough. The programs are complex and confusing and are limited in the care they provide.

Cryptography Export Controls - Canada's Dichotomous Cryptography Policy, Paul Bates Aug 2005

Cryptography Export Controls - Canada's Dichotomous Cryptography Policy, Paul Bates

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The effort to erect strong legal barriers to trans-national distribution of cryptography has significant gaps because strong cryptography can be obtained and used within Canada without legal restrictions. This paper advocates that Canada should exercise its discretion under the WA to diminish, not fortify, the restrictions of the export control regime.

Objectives: Primary intraventricular haemorrhage (PIVH) is a rare clinical entity. We sought to evaluate risk factors, clinical and radiological features, and outcome of patients with PIVH.

Materials and Methods: Cases of PIVH were identified from cohort of patients with non traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) by reviewing the radiological data. Their charts were reviewed and demographic, clinical, radiological and laboratory data was recorded and analyzed. Chi square and t test were used to determine predictors of poor outcome.

Results: Fifteen of 677 (2%) patients with ICH had PIVH. Nine (60%) were men. Median age was 56 years. Predisposing factors included hypertension …

Sex-Related Acoustic Changes In Voiceless English Fricatives, Shawn L. Nissen, Robert Allen Fox Aug 2005

Sex-Related Acoustic Changes In Voiceless English Fricatives, Shawn L. Nissen, Robert Allen Fox

Faculty Publications

This investigation is a comprehensive acoustic study of 4 voiceless fricatives (/f θ s ʃ/) in English produced by adults and pre-and postpubescent children aged 6-14 years. Vowel duration, amplitude, and several different spectral measures (including spectral tilt and spectral moments) were examined. Of specific interest was the pattern of normal development of the acoustic properties of fricatives and the nature of sex-specific patterns of fricative articulation in prepubescent children. Little evidence of amplitude or duration differences was found between speakers that was related to the sex of the speaker. However, significant sex-specific differences in fricative articulation were found in …

Estimating Party Policy Positions: Japan In Comparative Context, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit Aug 2005

Estimating Party Policy Positions: Japan In Comparative Context, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper first reviews a number of epistemological and methodological issues relating to the estimation of party policy positions, particularly in a comparative context, with special reference to the methodology of ‘expert surveys’. It is argued that expert surveys, as systematic summaries of the views of country specialists, have a particular role in assessing the content validity of other types of estimates of party policy positions. The paper moves on to analyze the positions of Japanese political parties in a comparative context, using results from a new 47-country expert survey. Attention is paid both to the substantive policy content of …

Social Capital And Corruption: Vote Buying And The Politics Of Reform In Thailand, William A. Callahan Aug 2005

Social Capital And Corruption: Vote Buying And The Politics Of Reform In Thailand, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I offer a critical view of the social capital thesis, which frequently argues that more is better (and less is worse), by examining the ethics of social capital, using Pierre Bourdieu's understanding of networks as defined by their limits. I argue that social capital only assumes conceptual coherence when distinguished from its complementary opposite. I illustrate these theoretical points with a discussion of political reform in Thailand and the 2001 general election. The election exemplifies the benefits of the circulation of social capital: voter turnout and party membership were up, and civil society was active. Yet democratic achievements in Thailand …

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt Aug 2005

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Research suggests that families have development histories which influence their responses to situations across the life course. The present study examined the effects of family relationship histories on intergenerational affection and conflict between adult children and their parents and how this affects parents’ depressive symptoms. Path analysis based on matched reports of adult children and their parents revealed that parental behavior early in life affects contemporary relationships between family members, which ultimately impacts parents’ depressive symptoms. Parental rejection is negatively associated with intergenerational affection, which in turn is negatively associated with depressive symptoms.

Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression methods are used to analyze these data. Interactions are tested across race and gender sub-groups.

Results: Caretaker education, caretaker rejection, and family transitions …

Second Graders' Favorite Weather Drawings, Ashley L. Sherman Aug 2005

Second Graders' Favorite Weather Drawings, Ashley L. Sherman

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

The Favorite Weather Drawing has been used extensively as an art therapy assessment tool. It has been theorized to contain certain variables that relate to a child’s underlying mood or perception of his or her environment. Since neither the Favorite Weather Drawing nor the similar Favorite Kind of Day Drawing have been researched extensively or standardized with normative populations, there has been a lack of research that could provide a much-needed foundation for such a popular assessment technique. This study explored regional and gender differences in the Favorite Weather Drawing of 2nd grade students as a way to provide groundwork …

The Impact Of Trade Liberalization On Growth, Unemployment, And Poverty In Bangladesh, Maha Z. Mirza Aug 2005

The Impact Of Trade Liberalization On Growth, Unemployment, And Poverty In Bangladesh, Maha Z. Mirza

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Trade liberalization has been one of the major policy components of the governments of the developing countries in the recent decades. Bangladesh as many other developing nations, has adopted different measures of trade reform policies as an element of International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Structural Adjustment Program (SAP), as well as to be an integral part of the world wide trend of globalization. Such policy measures include the reduction/rationalization of tariff rate, simplification of import and export trade procedures, relaxation of restrictive trade policies, and reform of financial and monetary policies. Even though, the trade reform measures were anticipated to increase …

Articles

Gene therapy aims to revert diseased phenotypes by the use of both viral and nonviral gene delivery systems. Substantial progress has been made in making gene transfer vehicles more efficient, less toxic, and nonimmunogenic and in allowing long-term transgene expression. One of the key issues in successfully implementing gene therapies in the clinical setting is to be able to regulate gene expression very tightly and consistently as and when it is needed. The regulation ought to be achievable using a compound that should be nontoxic, be able to penetrate into the desired target tissue or organ, and have a half-life …

Assessing The Educational Needs And Interests Of The Hispanic Population: The Role Of Extension, Susan Farner, M Elena Rhoads, German Cutz, Barbara Farner

Journal of Extension

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States and face unique problems concerning language and citizenship. However, institutions do not yet know how best to deliver services to this group or understand what services are needed. Although many programs designed for Hispanics exist, especially in urban areas, there is little documentation that they have been evaluated and are successful in serving the population they target. The focus group study described here was conducted to better understand what kind of information Hispanics in an urban setting are seeking and how best to disseminate information to them.

Effectiveness Of A Program To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Katherine L. Cason Aug 2005

Effectiveness Of A Program To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Katherine L. Cason

Journal of Extension

Americans do not ordinarily consume the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, thereby placing them at risk for the development of chronic diseases. EFNEP and the South East Produce Council implemented a program designed to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by low-income audiences reached through EFNEP. Pre-program surveys provided a profile of the families' fresh produce purchases and consumption level. Post-program data indicates that the program participants made a significant increase in their consumption of fruits and vegetables.

An Affirmative Approach To Parental Involvement In Youth Programs, Alayne Torretta, Laura Bovitz Aug 2005

An Affirmative Approach To Parental Involvement In Youth Programs, Alayne Torretta, Laura Bovitz

Journal of Extension

In youth development programs, it is preferred that any involvement of parents be child oriented. Adults stuck in parent-oriented behavior inhibit their child from having a positive experience in the program. This article demonstrates how adults showing parent-oriented behavior can be motivated to shift to child-oriented behavior within the boundaries of the program. New Jersey 4-H Leader Training Series provides tools needed for professionals that result in positive relationships among volunteers and parents. This holistic approach views all the attributes of parents, whereby professionals can spin negative behaviors positively to support the program.
