Attachment Style And Relationship Predictors Of Adult Children's Responsive Caregiving To Dependent Parents, Brent T. Tucker
Attachment Style And Relationship Predictors Of Adult Children's Responsive Caregiving To Dependent Parents, Brent T. Tucker
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, relationship closeness, and trust in the relationship predict adult children caregivers' (ACC) level of responsiveness to their dependent parents. Eighty-four adult children who provide support for a dependent parent were included in this study. Furthermore, correlations of avoidant attachment style with responsive caregiving and anxiety attachment style with responsive caregiving were investigated. A multiple regression was conducted and it was found that anxious attachment, trust, and relationship closeness stastically predicted responsive caregiving of ACCs caring for dependent parents [R2 = .26, F (3, 80) = 9.47, p < .001]. This linear combination of variables accounted for 26% of the variance in responsive caregiving. A voidant attachment was not found to predict responsive caregiving. There were no significant bivariate correlations found between anxious attachment and responsive caregiving or between avoidant attachment and responsive caregiving.

To examine the role of adipose-resident macrophages in insulin resistance, we examined the gene expression of CD68, a macrophage marker, along with macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in human subcutaneous adipose tissue using real-time RT-PCR. Both CD68 and MCP-1 mRNAs were expressed in human adipose tissue, primarily in the stromal vascular fraction. When measured in the adipose tissue from subjects with normal glucose tolerance, covering a wide range of BMI (21-51 kg/m2) and insulin sensitivity (SI) (0.6-8.0 × 10-4 min-1 · μU-1 · ml-1), CD68 mRNA abundance, which correlated with the number …
Implications Of Spatial Autocorrelation And Dispersal For The Modeling Of Species Distributions, Volker Bahn
Implications Of Spatial Autocorrelation And Dispersal For The Modeling Of Species Distributions, Volker Bahn
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Modeling the geographical distributions of wildlife species is important for ecology and conservation biology. Spatial autocorrelation in species distributions poses a problem for distribution modeling because it invalidates the assumption of independence among sample locations. I explored the prevalence and causes of spatial autocorrelation in data from the Breeding Bird Survey, covering the conterminous United States, using Regression Trees, Conditional Autoregressive Regressions (CAR), and the partitioning of variance. I also constructed a simulation model to investigate dispersal as a process contributing to spatial autocorrelation, and attempted to verify the connection between dispersal and spatial autocorrelation in species’ distributions in empirical …

Washington's Municipal Water Rights Bill Of 2003: Providing "Certainty And Flexibility" Or Violating The Separation Of Powers Doctrine?, Jason T. Morgan
Washington's Municipal Water Rights Bill Of 2003: Providing "Certainty And Flexibility" Or Violating The Separation Of Powers Doctrine?, Jason T. Morgan
Washington Law Review
The separation of powers doctrine limits the ability of the legislature to retroactively overrule judicial constructions of existing statutes. It is the province of the judiciary to interpret the law. Once a court interprets a statute, the legislature can only amend that statute prospectively. In the 1998 case of Theodoratus v. State Department of Ecology, the Supreme Court of Washington interpreted the Water Code to require that the proper measure of a water right is the amount of water actually beneficially used, and not the capacity of a water delivery system. In 2003, the Washington Legislature responded to the …
Handling The Failure Of A Government-Sponsored Enterprise, Richard Scott Carnell
Handling The Failure Of A Government-Sponsored Enterprise, Richard Scott Carnell
Washington Law Review
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are huge, fast-growing, highly leveraged, lightly regulated, and susceptible to failure. Prudence calls for having a legal mechanism adequate for handling their failure. Yet no adequate insolvency mechanism currently exists for them. Unlike ordinary business firms, these government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) cannot liquidate or reorganize under the Bankruptcy Code. If Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac became sufficiently troubled, its regulator could appoint a conservator to take control of the firm and attempt to restore its financial health. But by then the firm's problems could well have become too severe for the conservator to resolve. The conservatorship …
The Experience Of American And Canadian Cancer Patients In Deciding To Seek Alternative Care In Mexican Cancer Clinics, Alicia Bright
The Experience Of American And Canadian Cancer Patients In Deciding To Seek Alternative Care In Mexican Cancer Clinics, Alicia Bright
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Background. Each year, despite warnings from the American Cancer Association, many US and Canadian citizens travel to Tijuana, Mexico, for cancer care. The main criticism of these clinics is that they provide treatments that are unproven, potentially unsafe, and expensive. Despite this, about 35 clinics exist in Tijuana that provide alternative care to patients who pay cash for these services.
Objectives. To understand the lived experience of people who have made the choice to receive cancer treatment at alternative cancer clinics in Tijuana, and gain insight into the process by which that decision occurs.
Population. 5 participants were interviewed. Three …

Perceived Health Benefit And Soy Consumption Behavior: Two Stage Decision Model Approach, Wanki Moon, Siva K. Balasubramanian, Arbindra Rimal
Perceived Health Benefit And Soy Consumption Behavior: Two Stage Decision Model Approach, Wanki Moon, Siva K. Balasubramanian, Arbindra Rimal
Articles
A two-stage decision model is developed to assess the effect of perceived soy health benefits on consumers' decisions with respect to soy food. The first stage captures whether or not to consume soy food, while the second stage reflects how often to consume. A conceptual/analytical framework is also employed, combining Lancaster's characteristics model and Fishbein's multi-attribute model. Results show that perceived soy health benefits significantly influence both decision stages. Further, consumers' negative perceptions regarding soy (unappetizing taste and inconvenience) have a substantially greater impact on soy consumption behavior than their perceptions about soy health benefits. This finding carries significant implications …

Georgia's New Battleground: Five Georgia Law Professors Examine The State's New Tort Legislation, Lonnie T. Brown, Jr., Ronald L. Carlson, Thomas A. Eaton, C. Ronald Ellington, Michael L. Wells
Popular Media
In February, after several years of debate, the Georgia General Assembly enacted a comprehensive set of tort reform provisions. This fairly complex body of legislation contains 16 separate sections dealing with procedure, evidence and substantive tort issues. Shortly after it was signed into law, five Georgia Law professors sat down with alumni and students to describe parts of the new legislation, to identify some issues that are likely to arise as the new laws go into effect and to speculate about what they think the likely impact will be on litigation.

The South Dakota Legislature passed a law in 1991 recognizing living will declarations. An individual who is of sound mind and is 18 or more years old may make a declaration (living will) that governs the withholding or withdrawing of life-sustaining treatment when he or she is terminally ill. A federal law, effective December 1, 1991, The Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA), affects all health care facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices receiving Medicare or Medicaid. It stipulates that individuals must be given written information at the time of admission about their right under state law to accept or refuse …

Making Statements And Approval Voting, Enriqueta Aragones, Itzhak Gilboa, Andrew Weiss
Making Statements And Approval Voting, Enriqueta Aragones, Itzhak Gilboa, Andrew Weiss
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We assume that people have a need to make statements, and construct a model in which this need is the sole determinant of voting behavior. In this model, an individual selects a ballot that makes as close a statement as possible to her ideal point, where abstaining from voting is a possible (null) statement. We show that in such a model, a political system that adopts approval voting may be expected to enjoy a significantly higher rate of participation in elections than a comparable system with plurality rule.

On The Design Of An Immersive Environment For Security-Related Studies, Yougu Yuan
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Internet has become an essential part of normal operations of both public and private sectors. Many security issues are not addressed in the original Internet design, and security now has become a large concern for networking research and study. There is an imperative need to have an simulation environment that can be used to help study security-related research problems. In the thesis we present our effort to build such an environment: Real-time Immersive Network Simulation Environment (RINSE). RINSE features flexible configuration of models using various networking protocols and real-time user interaction. We also present the Estimate Next Infection (ENI) …

Altering The Tropism Of Lentiviral Vectors Through Pseudotyping, James Cronin, Xian Yang Zhang, Jakob Reiser
Altering The Tropism Of Lentiviral Vectors Through Pseudotyping, James Cronin, Xian Yang Zhang, Jakob Reiser
Faculty Publications
The host range of retroviral vectors including lentiviral vectors can be expanded or altered by a process known as pseudotyping. Pseudotyped lentiviral vectors consist of vector particles bearing glycoproteins (GPs) derived from other enveloped viruses. Such particles possess the tropism of the virus from which the GP was derived. For example, to exploit the natural neural tropism of rabies virus, vectors designed to target the central nervous system have been pseudotyped using rabies virus-derived GPs. Among the first and still most widely used GPs for pseudotyping lentiviral vectors is the vesicular stomatitis virus GP (VSV-G), due to the very broad …

From The Margins Of The Genome: Mobile Elements Shape Primate Evolution, Dale J. Hedges, Mark A. Batzer
Faculty Publications
As is the case with mammals in general, primate genomes are inundated with repetitive sequence. Although much of this repetitive content consists of "molecular fossils" inherited from early mammalian ancestors, a significant portion of this material comprises active mobile element lineages. Despite indications that these elements played a major role in shaping the architecture of the genome, there remain many unanswered questions surrounding the nature of the host-element relationship. Here we review advances in our understanding of the host-mobile element dynamic and its overall impact on primate evolution. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The Trials And Tribulations Of Eliciting American Indian Voice, Amber Madoll
Masters Theses
In this thesis I explored the application of oral history in the collection, preservation and interpretation of American Indian cultural history. Through the analysis of written ethnographies, published works, oral histories and case studies, this research addresses some of the major debates hindering oral history's admittance as a viable ethnographic and historical resource. The overall intention of this research was to elicit the major methodological issues anthropologists face when employing oral history techniques in American Indian studies so that solid, comprehensive strategies can be created and implemented to strengthen the acceptance and practice of oral history in modem cultural studies. …

“See Your Healthcare Provider For A Prescription Today!” The Influence Of Direct-To-Consumer Drug Advertising On Nurse Practitioners And Their Patients, Kelly A. Getman-Dissette
Masters Theses
In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration relaxed the guidelines regarding the advertising of prescription drugs directly to consumers (i.e., direct-to-consumer advertising, DTCA). The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of DTCA on the relationships of healthcare providers with their patients. In order to accomplish this task, in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with ten nurse practitioners (NPs). The interviews sought out provider perceptions on four topics as they relate to DTCA: diagnosis and treatment decisions, prescribing practices, additional burden on the provider, and patient trust in the provider. The findings reveal that DTCA has had both …
