Chlorella Virus-Encoded Deoxyuridine Triphosphatases Exhibit Different Temperature Optima, Yuanzheng Zhang, Hideaki Moriyama, Kohei Homma, James L. Van Etten

Hideaki Moriyama Publications

A putative deoxyuridine triphosphatase (dUTPase) gene from chlorella virus PBCV-1 was cloned, and the recombinant protein was expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein has dUTPase activity and requires Mg2+ for optimal activity, while it retains some activity in the presence of other divalent cations. Kinetic studies of the enzyme revealed a Km of 11.7 μ M, a turnover kcat of 6.8 s-1, and a catalytic efficiency of kcat/Km = 5.8 x 105 M-1 s-1. dUTPase genes were cloned and expressed from two other chlorella viruses …

Central Somatosensory Changes And Altered Muscle Synergies In Subjects With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency, Carol Courtney, Rose Marie Rine, Penny G. Kroll

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

To clarify the mechanisms of compensation in subjects with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency (ACL-D), we examined proprioception, quadriceps strength, somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and muscle responses during gait in varied combinations of speed and incline. Seventeen subjects with ACL-D were grouped by functional level and report of giving way. Seven subjects without ACL-D served as a control sample for muscle response measures. ACL-D subjects with quadriceps weakness experienced giving way and could not resume sport activities. Those without weakness fell into one of two groups: (1) copers, who had full return to previous activity and no giving way despite proprioceptive …

Cattle are the species used most frequently for the development of assisted reproductive technologies, such as nuclear transfer. Cattle cloning can be performed by a large number of laboratories around the world, and the efficiency of nuclear transfer in cattle is the highest among all species in which successful cloning has been achieved. However, an understanding of the expression of imprinted genes in this important species is lacking. In the present study, real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was utilized to quantify the expression of the bovine Igf2, Igf2r, and H19 genes in eight major organs (brain, bladder, …

Trace Elements Status Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Moose (Alces Alces) In Nova Scotia, Beth Pollock

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

The province of Nova Scotia is considered to have two moose (Alces alces) populations. In 2003, the moose of the mainland area of the province were formally listed “ENDANGERED” under the Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act. To date, the specific causes of the Mainland moose population decline have not been determined. Trace element imbalances have been considered as a potential etiology for the population decline. Liver and kidney samples were collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and moose throughout Nova Scotia during the fall and winter 2000-01 to compare trace element concentrations between the two species, in relation to age, …

Growth And Water Relations Of Littleleaf Linden Trees Established In Irrigated Buffalograss And Kentucky Bluegrass, J. Ryan Stewart, Roger Kjelgren, Paul G. Johnson, Michael R. Kuhns

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Although transplanted trees typically establish and grow without incident in frequently irrigated turfgrass, their performance in precisely irrigated turfgrass in an arid climate is not known. We investigated the effect of precision irrigation scheduling on growth and water relations of balled-and-burlapped littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata Mill. `Greenspire') planted in buffalograss (Buchloë dactyloides [Nutt.] Engelm. `Tatanka') and kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Over 2 years, trees in turfgrass were irrigated either by frequent replacement based on local reference evapotranspiration, or precision irrigated by estimating depletion of soil water to the point of incipient water stress for each turfgrass species. Predawn leaf …

The Defining Characteristics Of A Postmodern Church, Judy Niemi Johnson Aug 2005

The Defining Characteristics Of A Postmodern Church, Judy Niemi Johnson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Many churches are struggling to attract younger generations to their services. While the ministry changes from traditional style to contemporary style worked to draw baby-boomers back into the church, it did not have the same effect on people in their 20's and 30's. However, there are churches that draw younger generations in large numbers. Known as postmodern churches, they look significantly different in their worship style and ministry approach. Contemporary churches have attempted to incorporate the same style elements into their services, but have not seen similar results. This research goes beyond these simple style changes and discusses the shared …

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Anthropometric equations developed specifically for the estimation of body composition parameters in Black females are limited. Data from the Lifespan Health Research Center were used to develop a new, easy to use equation to estimate the percent body fat of post-menopausal Black females using simple and easy to collect anthropometrics. The body composition of 72 post-menopausal Black females was measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Validation (N=55) and cross-validation groups (N=17) were randomly assigned. Prediction models were developed using stepwise multiple regression analyses with percent body fat as the dependent variable and various anthropometrics as the independent variables. The …

Incidence And Clinical Predictors Of Risk Factors For Inappropriate Shock In Patients With Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators, Shu-Ling Lo Phd Aug 2005

Incidence And Clinical Predictors Of Risk Factors For Inappropriate Shock In Patients With Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators, Shu-Ling Lo Phd

Dissertations

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major unresolved medical problem worldwide. Although Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICD) are highly effective in diagnosing and treating life threatening arrhythmias, inappropriate shock therapy (IST) occurs in approximately 5-20% of ICD recipients. IST results in pain, anxiety, induction of ventricular arrhythmias, decreased battery longevity, and even death. Researchers studying clinical predictors of IST have drawn findings based on single case studies with small samples or with outdated data. This study filled this gap by describing the incidence and co-existing clinical predictors of IST. Methodology This descriptive, retrospective study analyzed the incidence and clinical predictors of IST …

An Exploratory Study Of Functional Status In Post Cardiac Arrest Survivors Discharged To Home, John J. Whitcomb Phd

Dissertations

Cardiopulmonary arrest is a major health problem, claiming 350,000 to 450,000 lives per year in the United States, but survival has increased to 49% from the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) by lay personnel. Leidy's work on functional status is a comprehensive framework to describe functional status and has not been used in this population. The specific aims of the project were to describe perceived functional capacity, physical functional performance, mental health, symptom distress, and demographic factors in survivors of cardiopulmonary arrest after discharge to home and to examine the relationship among perceived functional capacity, mental health and physical …

Evidence-Based Practice Considerations In Facilitating The Risk Surveillance Of Occupational Exposure To Antineoplastic Agents, Theresa A. Rafique Aug 2005

Evidence-Based Practice Considerations In Facilitating The Risk Surveillance Of Occupational Exposure To Antineoplastic Agents, Theresa A. Rafique

MSN Research Projects

According to Martin and Larson (2003), healthcare professionals involved with handling antineoplastic drugs may be exposed inadvertently to these agents, placing them at potential risk for acute and long-term adverse effects. For example, cyclophosphamide one of the most frequently used antineoplastic agents in clinical treatment facilities, is a known human carcinogen (Larson, Khazaeli, & Dillon, 2003). While the health risks associated with cytotoxic use have been well established, there is little information available about how people perceive these risks, particularly among those most affected by it-chemotherapy nurses. Therefore, the purpose of this Evidence Based Practice (EBP) project was to develop …

Group Supervision: A Review Of Practices And Models In Training, Jeremy M. Linton

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

Group supervision is an often used modality of supervision for post-degree and practicing counselors. Despite its wide use, practicing supervisors in the community receive little to no training in group supervision methods and practices. This article is intended to review several key practices and models of group supervision. In total, two practice considerations for forming supervision groups and five models of group supervision are outlined. The article concludes with a brief integration of these models and several suggestions for practice are offered.

The Influence Of Demographic Information, Ethnic Identity, And Pro-Feminist Attitudes On Cognitive Empathy, Robbie J. Steward, Robin Powers, Hanik Jo Aug 2005

The Influence Of Demographic Information, Ethnic Identity, And Pro-Feminist Attitudes On Cognitive Empathy, Robbie J. Steward, Robin Powers, Hanik Jo

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

A critical overview of the literature provides a frame for the overall purpose of this empirical study, which examines the influence of ethnic identity and attitudes about women on individuals’ ability to engage in empathic thinking. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that undergraduate students’ (n=179) ethnic identity and attitudes about women significantly contributed to 23% of the variance in the ability to think empathically. Among the three sets of independent variables (demographic information, attitudes about women, and ethnic identity subscales), ethnic identity was found to be the only significant (p < .01) contributor to the model, explaining 17% of the 23% variance in scores measuring ability to use empathy. Findings suggested that individuals who scored higher on the ethnic identity scale, particularly in relationship to the orientation to other groups, had a greater ability to think empathically, as indicated by higher scores on the empathy scale. Implications for training in counseling programs is discussed.

Failure To Complete A Functional Restoration Program For Chronic Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Prospective One-Year Outcome Study, Robert J. Gatchel, Timothy J. Proctor, Tom G. Mayer, Brian Theodore

Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive

This large prospective study determined that noncompleters of interdisciplinary tertiary rehabilitation for CDOMDs had comparatively poor socioeconomic outcomes in the year after discharge from treatment, especially on work status and health utilization outcomes. These outcomes are of great relevance to societal, medical, and indemnity costs and future worker productivity. Several risk factors of possible importance in identifying potential noncompleters early in the treatment program were identified that may yield more effective interventions tailored to maintain compliance and decrease the percentage of drop-outs.

Impact Of Palmitic Acid Coating On The Water Uptake And Loss Of Ammonium Sulfate Particles, R. M. Garland, M. E. Wise, M. R. Beaver, H. L. Dewitt, A. C. Aiken, J. L. Jimenez, M. A. Tolbert

CUP Faculty Research

While water insoluble organics are prevalent in the atmosphere, it is not clear how the presence of such species alters the chemical and physical properties of atmospheric aerosols. Here we use a combination of FTIR spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (AMS) to characterize ammonium sulfate particles coated with palmitic acid. Coated aerosols were generated by atomizing pure ammonium sulfate, mixing the particles with a heated flow of nitrogen with palmitic acid vapor, and then flowing the mixture through an in-line oven to create internally mixed particles. The mixing state of the particles was probed using the …
