Who Are You, Class Of 2008, Michelle Rahman

Who Are You Class of...Orientation Speeches

“Politics seem to entice a great many of you with you demonstrating your interest by working on political campaigns and being members of the staffs of Congressmen and Senators. Legislative aides, judicial interns, senate interns – lots of you have made your political mark. I had to laugh when reading one of your narrative statements in which one of you confided that with great difficulty you had to “come out to your parents” and admit to being….a Democrat.”

“Your interests and talents are varied and you are accomplished in so many areas. One of you is currently the principal bassoonist …

Online Education: The Changing Face Of Higher Education, Patrick G. Moore Aug 2005

Online Education: The Changing Face Of Higher Education, Patrick G. Moore

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

As the shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy advances, the demand for information will continue to rise. With knowledge becoming such an important asset, obtaining information is becoming more of a priority for our society. Higher education is responding to this demand with the use of online education. Technology now provides an avenue to obtain education over the Internet. Time, space, and distance limitations are no longer a deterrent to pursuing new information. As with any new technology, time is needed to refine and determine how to best use it. Online education is no different. In this …

Education And Labour Market Outcomes For Indigenous Young People., Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer) Aug 2005

Education And Labour Market Outcomes For Indigenous Young People., Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

LSAY Briefing Reports

This briefing issue summarises findings from research based on the 1995 and 1998 LSAY cohorts of Year 9 students, focusing on the Indigenous students in the surveys. Analyses of data indicate that Indigenous students in Year 9 have a generally positive perception of their schools, however fewer Indigenous students aspire to or do complete Year 12 than their non-Indigenous counterparts. The study highlights an array of differential outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students that contribute partially to explaining the lower rate of Year 12 participation among Indigenous students. Family Affairs Newsletter The Thinking Cap 2005-08-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The Use Of Loan Loss Provisions For Earnings, Capital Management And Signalling By Australian Banks, Asokan Anandarajan, Iftekhar Hasan, Cornelia Mccarthy Aug 2005

The Use Of Loan Loss Provisions For Earnings, Capital Management And Signalling By Australian Banks, Asokan Anandarajan, Iftekhar Hasan, Cornelia Mccarthy

CRIF Working Paper series

This research is motivated by the fact that there is a paucity of research on the earnings management practices of banks in Australia. Research on the practices of North American, European and Asian banks provided conflicting evidence. In this study, we examine whether Australian banks engage in earnings, capital management and signalling, and, if so, the extent to which loan loss provisions (LLPs) are used for this purpose. Our results indicate that banks in Australia use loan loss provisions to manage earnings. Further, listed commercial banks engage more aggressively in earnings management using LLPs than other banks. We also find …

Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site: Independent Review And Technical Evaluation Of The Soil Sampling Protocols For Site Characterization And Cleanup Confirmation, Rocky Mountain Peace And Justice Center, Rick W. Chappell Ph.D.

Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center

The objective of this report was to provide an independent review and technical evaluation of the soil sampling protocols used at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS) for site characterization and cleanup confirmation. This technical evaluation focuses on (1) the Buffer Zone (BZ), since the National Wildlife Refuge will only include lands contained in the BZ, (2) the surface soils, the primary exposure medium and potential exposure point for Refuge workers and visitors, and (3) the radionuclides of uranium, plutonium, and americium, the contaminants expected to be of primary exposure concern in the Refuge.

Workplace Organization, Labor Process Control And Occupational Health. Ph. D. Dissertation, Linda Treiber Aug 2005

Workplace Organization, Labor Process Control And Occupational Health. Ph. D. Dissertation, Linda Treiber

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this research is to understand the complex relationships between working conditions and occupational health. The research draws from labor process theory that generally views worker control over the labor process as essential to non-alienated labor and from epidemiologic models of host, agent/exposure, and environment. Using General Social Survey 2002 cross sectional data, I investigate the effects of standard epidemiologic factors and worker labor process control factors in multivariate models to predict the dependent variables of workplace injury, persistent pain, exhaustion, and general health status. I suggest that labor process autonomy, social cohesion and skill utilization generally have …

Immunological Response To Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy In Children With Clinically Stable Hiv-1 Infection, Howard M. Rosenblatt, Kenneth E. Stanley, Lin Y. Song, George M. Johnson, Andrew A. Immunological Response To Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy In Children With Clinically Stable Hiv-1 Infection, Howard M. Rosenblatt, Kenneth E. Stanley, Lin Y. Song, George M. Johnson, Andrew A. Wiznia, Sharon A. Nachman, Paul A. Krogstad, Pediatric Aids Clinical Trials Group 377 Study Team

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

We studied changes in 60 immunological parameters after the administration of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in 192 clinically stable antiretroviral drug–experienced HIV-1–infected children 4 months– 17 years old. The studied immunological parameters included standard lymphocyte subsets and lymphocyte surface markers of maturation and activation. The most significant changes during the 48-week study period were seen for CD8+, CD8+ CD62L+ CD45RA+, CD8+ CD38+ HLA-DR+, and CD4+ T cell percentages (P < .0001 for all parameters). These changes suggest that significant decreases in the expression of activation markers and increases in the expression of naive markers in the CD8+ T cell population may be related to better virologic control in these HIV-1–infected children, who had relatively stable immune function at the initiation of HAART. At week 44 of HAART, the major immunological parameters in these HIV-1–infected children moved from baseline values to about halfway to two-thirds of the way toward the values in healthy, uninfected children.

Expectations & Experiences Of Resettlement: Sudanese Refugees’ Perspectives On Their Journeys From Egypt To Australia, Canada And The United States, Martha Fanjoy, Hilary Ingraham, Cyrena Khoury, Amir Osman Aug 2005

Expectations & Experiences Of Resettlement: Sudanese Refugees’ Perspectives On Their Journeys From Egypt To Australia, Canada And The United States, Martha Fanjoy, Hilary Ingraham, Cyrena Khoury, Amir Osman

Faculty Journal Articles

A key center for refugeebased activity is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regional office, located in Cairo. In recent years, this unit has referred approximately 4,000 recognized refugees per year for resettlement to the United States, Canada, Australia and a number of other smaller receiving countries, making it the largest such program in the world. But despite the size of the refugee population and the resettlement program in Cairo, there has been little research conducted into the expectations and experiences of the refugees themselves on this process. These perspectives could be significant determinants of success in the …

Survivor Assistance Profile: Clear Path International Rebuilding Shattered Lives In Southeast Asia, Imbert Matthee

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

When Clear Path International (CPI) staff first met Le Van Phuc in the spring of 2001, the 29-year-old Vietnamese UXO survivor's situation was desperate. He had suffered multiple injuries after he set off an unidentified piece of ordnance while hoeing in the backyard of his family's home in Dong Ha.
