Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Growth, Feed Consumption, And Conformation Traits For Double-Muscled Belgian Blue Bulls Performance-Tested In Belgium, N. Gengler, C. Seutin, F. Boonen, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
For 1,442 Belgian Blue bulls performance- tested at the Centre de Selection de la Race Blanc-Bleue Belge, nine traits were observed: height at withers at 7 mo, height at withers at 13 mo, weight at 7 mo, weight at 13 mo, average feed consumption of concentrates, average daily gain, average feed consumption of concentrates per average daily gain, average feed consumption of concentrates per mean metabolic weight, and price per kilogram of live weight. This price is based on muscle conformation and is therefore used as muscle conformation score. Restricted maximum likelihood with a derivative-free algorithm was used to estimate …

Faculty Publications
Background: The Family Blood Pressure Program is an ongoing, NHLBI-sponsored, multi-center program to study the genetic determinants of high blood pressure. The goal of this particular study was to study patterns of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in four ethnic groups: African Americans, Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians. Methods: A major part of participants in three networks GENOA, HyperGEN and SAPPHIRe were recruited mainly through hypertensive probands. MetS was defined as a categorical trait following the National Cholesterol Education Program definition (c-MetS). MetS was also characterized quantitatively through multivariate factor analyses (FA) of 10 risk variables (q-MetS). Logistic regression and frequency tables were …
Learning The Wrong Lessons From "An American Tragedy": A Critique Of The Berger-Twerski Informed Choice Proposal, David E. Bernstein
Learning The Wrong Lessons From "An American Tragedy": A Critique Of The Berger-Twerski Informed Choice Proposal, David E. Bernstein
George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series
This paper is a critique of Margaret Berger and Aaron Twerski, “Uncertainty and Informed Choice: Unmasking Daubert”, forthcoming the Michigan Law Review. Berger and Twerski propose that courts recognize a cause of action that would allow plaintiffs who claim injury from pharmaceutical products, but who do not have sufficient evidence to prove causation, to recover damages for deprivation of informed choice. Berger and Twerski claim inspiration from the litigation over allegations that the morning sickness drug Bendectin caused birth defects. Considering the criteria Berger and Twerski suggest for their proposed cause of action in the context of Bendectin, it appears …

Runx-Dependent Expression Of Pkc Is Critical For Cell Survival In The Sea Urchin Embryo, Carrie Dickey-Sims, Anthony J. Robertson, Dawn E. Rupp, John J. Mccarthy, James A. Coffman
Physiology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Runx transcription factors play critical roles in the developmental control of cell fate and contribute variously as oncoproteins and tumor suppressors to leukemia and other cancers. To discover fundamental Runx functions in the cell biology of animal development, we have employed morpholino antisense-mediated knockdown of the sea urchin Runx protein SpRunt-1. Previously we showed that embryos depleted of SpRunt-1 arrest development at early gastrula stage and underexpress the conventional protein kinase C SpPKC1.
RESULTS: We report here that SpRunt-1 deficiency leads to ectopic cell proliferation and extensive apoptosis. Suppression of the apoptosis by pharmacological inhibition of caspase-3 prevents the …

Will Wi-Fi Make Your Private Network Public? Wardriving, Criminal And Civil Liability, And The Security Risks Of Wireless Networks, Anita Ramasastry, Jane Winn
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Wireless networking is growing in popularity because it is often cheaper and more convenient than other computer networking systems. Wireless networks, however, are also very hard to secure. Locating insecure wireless networks and advertising their locations is an activity known as “wardriving.” Exploiting the vulnerability of a wireless network to hack into the computer system or to monitor the wireless transmissions can give rise to liability under federal felony and misdemeanor statutes, as well as federal civil liability and liability under state law private causes of action. When introducing wireless networking into business information systems, system administrators should use all …
Comparative Law: Alcohol, Drug Abuse & Jurisprudence From The United States To Korea, Hyun J. Cho
Comparative Law: Alcohol, Drug Abuse & Jurisprudence From The United States To Korea, Hyun J. Cho
LLM Theses and Essays
Human beings have struggled against alcohol and drug addiction since the beginning of history. All kinds of possible ways have been used to treat addicts effectively, such as segregation, whipping, sterilization, or execution. Like the ancient methods used to treat the disabled, these methods used to treat alcoholic and drug addicts stemmed mainly from ignorance and prejudice. Through trial and error, a fresh approach of treating alcoholism and drug addiction as a disease has emerged. This new perspective has created drug courts and a movement called Alcoholics Anonymous that have shown successful results, in helping create greater protection under the …

Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Is Critical For Ischemic Remodeling, Mural Cell Recruitment, And Blood Flow Reserve, Jun Yu, Ebu D. Demuinck, Zhenwu Zhuang, Mary Drinane
Dartmouth Scholarship
The genetic loss of endothelial-derived nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in mice impairs vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and ischemia-initiated blood flow recovery resulting in critical limb ischemia. This result may occur through impaired arteriogenesis, angiogenesis, or mobilization of stem and progenitor cells. Here, we show that after ischemic challenge, eNOS knockout mice [eNOS (-/-)] have defects in arteriogenesis and functional blood flow reserve after muscle stimulation and pericyte recruitment, but no impairment in endothelial progenitor cell recruitment. More importantly, the defects in blood flow recovery, clinical manifestations of ischemia, ischemic reserve capacity, and pericyte recruitment into the growing neovasculature can …
Exogamy And Bias Against Daughters In Health-Care Provision: A Theory And Evidence From Two Northern States In India, Sajal Lahiri, Sharmistha Self
Exogamy And Bias Against Daughters In Health-Care Provision: A Theory And Evidence From Two Northern States In India, Sajal Lahiri, Sharmistha Self
Economics Discussion Papers
This is a theoretical and empirical paper to analyze possible bias against daughters in the provision of healthcare. Women once married become part of in-laws’ families, leading to certain inter-family externalities in household decision making, which in turn result in gender bias in healthcare. We test our theoretical predictions using LSMS household survey data from two Indian states, viz. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. We find strong evidence for the existence of bias against daughters. We also find, consistent with our theory but contrary to conventional wisdom, that the bias is more pronounced among Hindu families (who tend to practice exogamy) …

Transgressing The Spiritual Boundary: Integrating The Soul Into Psychology, Frederick Milacci, David Lawson, Michael Firmin, William Anderson
Transgressing The Spiritual Boundary: Integrating The Soul Into Psychology, Frederick Milacci, David Lawson, Michael Firmin, William Anderson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of the present symposium is twofold: 1) to evaluate the definition of spirituality and explore the misuse of the construct in the literature, and 2) to present positive alternatives for using spirituality in psychology. The symposium intends to present the material in a developmental sequence, building on previous material. The first presenter describes the problem of an ambiguous definition of spirituality. Then, citing examples from the literature, the presenter shows how this definition, although broad, can result in an abuse of power in order to force acquiescence to desired behaviors and calls for a spirituality more explicitly and …

Technological Characteristics And R&D Alliance Form: Evidence From The U.S. Biotechnology Industry, Xia Wang
Technological Characteristics And R&D Alliance Form: Evidence From The U.S. Biotechnology Industry, Xia Wang
Economics Working Papers
This study seeks to advance and test the knowledge-based theory of the firm as it applies to explaining the governance structure of R&D alliances. Unlike transaction-cost economics, the knowledge-based theory attempts to explain organizational form not primarily in terms of incentive misalignment but in terms of the creation, acquisition, and coordination of productive capabilities. To study the role played by firm-specific technological competencies, I consider three technological characteristics of an alliance: technological similarity, technological relatedness, and technological diversity. With a sample of 111 biotech-biotech R&D alliances, I find that technological relatedness and diversity increase the probability that allying firms would …

Assessing Success After Cerebral Revascularization For Ischemia., John E Wanebo, Sepideh Amin-Hanjani, Cynthia Boyd, Terry Peery
Neurosurgery
Cerebral revascularization continues to evolve as an option in the setting of ischemia. The potential to favorably influence stroke risk and the natural history of cerebrovascular occlusive disease is being evaluated by the ongoing Carotid Occlusion Surgery Study and the Japanese Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass Trial. For those patients who undergo bypass in the setting of ischemia, four key areas of follow-up include functional neurological status, neurocognitive status, bypass patency, and status of cerebral blood flow and perfusion. Several stroke scales that can be used to assess functional status include the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, Bathel Index, Modified Rankin Scale, …

The African Telecommunications Union: A Pan-African Approach To Telecommunications Reform, Patricia K. Mccormick
Communication Faculty Research Publications
This article examines the organisational structure and strategic plans of the African Telecommunica- tions Union (ATU). Although the ATU has been restructured to include private telecommunications entities as asso- ciate members, it remains essentially an inter-governmental agency. The article assesses the benefits of a regional approach to telecommunications reform and proposes that regional economic organisations replace the nation states as members of the ATU. Although the goals of the ATU, as articulated in its strategic plans are laudable, clearly de- fined benchmarks and specific strategies to achieve them are needed to make the organisation more effective.

Jackrabbit Football '05, South Dakota State University
Jackrabbit Football Media Guides (1950-2014)
On August 15, 2003, South Dakota State announced that the university would begin the process to reclassify from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I status. The reclassification process requires five years, starting with the 2003-04 exploratory season and ending with an evaluation visit following the 2007-08 season. That would make SDSU a fullfledged member of NCAA Division I for the 2008-09 season. This year, 2005-06, is the Provisional Second Year meaning SDSU must be in full compliance with all Division I legislation and membership requirements including scholarship minimums and Division I scheduling.

Analysis Of Affymetrix Genechip Data Using Amplified Rna, Leslie Cope, Scott M. Hartman, Hinrich W.H. Gohlmann, Jay P. Tiesman, Rafael A. Irizarry
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
The standard method of target synthesis for hybridization to Affymetrix GeneChip® expression microarrays requires a relatively large amount of input total RNA (1-15 micrograms). When small biological samples are collected by microdissection or other methods, amplification techniques are required to provide sufficient target for hybridization to expression arrays. One amplification technique used is to perform two successive rounds of T7-based in vitro transcription. However, the use of random primers required to re-generate cDNA from the first round transcription reaction results in shortened copies of the cDNA, and ultimately the cRNA, transcripts from which the 5' end is missing. In this …
