When The Past Meets The Present: Economic And Business Development Of Hungary And Russia From Communism To Market, Zinaida Karapetyan Aug 2005

When The Past Meets The Present: Economic And Business Development Of Hungary And Russia From Communism To Market, Zinaida Karapetyan

Dissertations

The study analyzes the continuity in economic and business development in Hungary and Russia from command economy to market. It consists of two parts.

The first part presents an overview of historical development of the planned economic system in Russia and Hungary with the emphasis on two issues ¿ how the system came about and what kind of reforms had been introduced prior to its collapse. The first issue is addressed to demonstrate that the communist regime in either country was not simply imposed on it by some ideologically driven group, in the case of Russia, or by the Soviet …

Applying Cognitive Psychology To Education, Training And Testing: Review Of Experimental Cognitive Psychology And Its Applications, A. F. Healy (Ed.)., Brian H. Bornstein Aug 2005

Applying Cognitive Psychology To Education, Training And Testing: Review Of Experimental Cognitive Psychology And Its Applications, A. F. Healy (Ed.)., Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This book, which is part of the American Psychological Association’s Decade of Behavior series, is both less and more than it seems. Its title sounds like it would be suitable for a cognitive psychology laboratory course, but its scope is too narrow for that. It focuses largely on a relatively small subset of applied cognitive psychological topics—education, training, and testing—and the research traditions of three (albeit three distinguished and influential) researchers: Lyle Bourne, Walter Kintsch, and Thomas Landauer. In that sense, then, the book is less than it seems. In another sense, though, it is more than it seems. In …

Navigating Cultures And Epistemologies In Science And Technology Education, Kathleen Theresa Kurzk Aug 2005

Navigating Cultures And Epistemologies In Science And Technology Education, Kathleen Theresa Kurzk

Dissertations

This investigation focuses on the nexus of science and culture in the lives of marginalized youth in the United States and South Africa. The epistemologies and contextual realities of cross-cultural learner cohorts and their understandings of scientific phenomena are examined. The researcher was a participant observer within the context of the Science, Technology & Culture: Empowering Learners (STC) program, an after-school and school-based collaboration focused upon integrating science, technology and culture. Electronic communication provided a vehicle for dialogue between youth in St. Louis, Missouri, USA and a South African Township. Study findings include documentation of the marginalizing effects of poverty …

Stress And Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Christopher B. Rosnick Aug 2005

Stress And Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Christopher B. Rosnick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current dissertation sought to examine stress in three different, but overlapping, ways. The first study examined how self-reported negative life events, in the aggregate and individually, are associated with cognitive performance. The results suggested that there was no significant relationship between the aggregate measures of self-reported negative life events and cognitive performance. On the other hand, several individual negative life events were associated with cognitive functioning. The findings support previous research indicating that using estimates of individual stressors rather than aggregate measures of stressors increases the predictive validity of stress measurement.

The second study assessed the cross-sectional and longitudinal …

Expressive Association After Dale, David E. Bernstein Aug 2005

Expressive Association After Dale, David E. Bernstein

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

The right to join with other people to promote a particular outlook, known as the right of expressive association, is a necessary adjunct to the right of freedom of speech, which is protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. In Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, the United States Supreme Court found that the Boy Scouts of America had a First Amendment expressive association right to exclude a homosexual adult volunteer. Dale is likely to prove to be one of the most important First Amendment cases of recent years, because the Court enforced a broad right of …

How High School Science-Related Experiences Influenced Career Persistence, Andrew Dwight Shaw

Dissertations

The events of 9/11 brought into focus two ongoing trends that were present before this tragedy and have continued since: 1) The United States needs more scientists if it is to ensure its freedoms and maintain its economy. 2) The number of scientists in the ¿pipeline¿ is declining because of the diminished presence of foreign scientists (they are wanted in their own countries), the under-representation of minorities and women, and the reduced numbers of students able and willing to take on the scholastic rigors necessary for a science or engineering degree. Though much has been written about improving science education, …

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd Aug 2005

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd

Dissertations and Theses

The denouement of conflict is essential in the process of crafting public policy. The settlement of clashes over who get what, who pays, and who benefits is a critical component of a process described as decision making in the public interest. However, in some cases, the process results in unresolved controversy rather than the formulation of public policy. This may result from too little time being allocated to problem setting because of a rush to find problem solutions.

Conflict arises in public disputes due to a mixture of interests and values by multiple parties and the expression of divergent views …

The Duty To Bargain In Good Faith: Nlrb V. Truitt Manufacturing Co. And Nlrb V. Insurance Agents’ International Union, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt Aug 2005

The Duty To Bargain In Good Faith: Nlrb V. Truitt Manufacturing Co. And Nlrb V. Insurance Agents’ International Union, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt

ExpressO

This article discusses two classic Supreme Court cases from the 1950's that explore the contours of the obligation to bargain in good faith: NLRB v. Truitt Manufacturing Co. and NLRB v. Insurance Agents' International Union. In the Truitt case, the Supreme Court held that the obligation to bargain in good faith requires an employer to open its books to the union when the employer refuses a request for a wage increase on the basis that such an increase will drive the employer out of business. In the Insurance Agents' case, the Supreme Court held that union slow-down tactics were consistent …

Negotiating Sex, Michelle J. Anderson Aug 2005

Negotiating Sex, Michelle J. Anderson

Working Paper Series

“Negotiating Sex” is a response to the two major proposals for rape law reform in legal scholarship today, as well as a proposal for a third way. Susan Estrich and Donald Dripps argue that sexual penetration should be legal unless the victim expresses her non-consent, a proposal I call the “No Model.” Stephen Schulhofer argues that sexual penetration should be illegal unless the defendant obtains affirmative consent for penetration through the victim’s words or conduct, a proposal I call the “Yes Model.” Under this model, according to Schulhofer, if a woman does not say “no,” and “her silence is combined …
