Challenging Policies That Do Not Play Fair: A Credential Relevancy Framework Using Trust Negotiation Ontologies, Travis S. Leithead Aug 2005

Challenging Policies That Do Not Play Fair: A Credential Relevancy Framework Using Trust Negotiation Ontologies, Travis S. Leithead

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis challenges the assumption that policies will "play fair" within trust negotiation. Policies that do not "play fair" contain requirements for authentication that are misleading, irrelevant, and/or incorrect, based on the current transaction context. To detect these unfair policies, trust negotiation ontologies provide the context to determine the relevancy of a given credential set for a particular negotiation. We propose a credential relevancy framework for use in trust negotiation that utilizes ontologies to process the set of all available credentials C and produce a subset of credentials C' relevant to the context of a given negotiation. This credential relevancy …

Lines Of Defense: Coping With Predators In The Rocky Mountain Region, Eric M. Gese, Sean P. Keenan, Ann M. Kitchen

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

This sourcebook provides information useful to producers of all types of livestock in the Rocky Mountain States. The applicability of this information to specific livestock operations will depend upon the characteristics of the operation and the willingness and ability of producers to experiment with various techniques and procedures. Most producers will have experience with some methods of preventing losses to predators. Information in this booklet may provide new insights or sources of information for learning more about methods of depredation management. The booklet also includes information about techniques others are using, and provides opportunities for producers to contact people willing …

The Effect Of A Lingual Magnet On Fricative Production: An Acoustic Evaluation Of Placement And Adaptation, Andrea Lynn Weaver Aug 2005

The Effect Of A Lingual Magnet On Fricative Production: An Acoustic Evaluation Of Placement And Adaptation, Andrea Lynn Weaver

Theses and Dissertations

Much of speech kinematics research is conducted by attaching a device to the articulators. However very little research has been conducted to determine what influence these devices may have on the perceptual and acoustic characteristics of speech. This study examined the effect of placing a small magnet on the tongue of ten normal adult speakers while reading a sentence containing /s/ and "sh" in initial, medial and final position. Two different placements of 10 and 15 mm from the tip of the tongue were analyzed. Data were taken before magnet placement, immediately after magnet placement, after 5 minutes of conversation, …

Mapping Ogc Prince 2 To Sei Cmmi 1.1, Ahmad Luqman, Fida Hussain, Dr. S. Tauseef -Ur- Rehman

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) version 1.1, developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), USA and the PRoject IN Controlled Environment (PRINCE) version 2 developed by Central Computing and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) now Office of Government Commerce (OGC) as UK Government standard for IT Project Management, share a common concern with Project and Quality management by improved process management. Both are driven by similar concerns and intuitively correlated. Organizations concerned with PRINCE 2 certification often question its overlap with the CMMI. We have looked into OGC PRINCE 2 process/components and map it to the different goals/practices in the SEI …

Towards Knowledge Morphing: A Triangulation Approach To Link Tacit And Explicit Knowledge, Fehmida Hussain, Syed Sibte Raza Abidi, Syed Ali Raza Aug 2005

Towards Knowledge Morphing: A Triangulation Approach To Link Tacit And Explicit Knowledge, Fehmida Hussain, Syed Sibte Raza Abidi, Syed Ali Raza

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Current knowledge management systems are largely designed to deal with a single knowledge modality. Given the diversity of knowledge modalities that encompass any given topic/problem it is reasonable to demand access and use of all available knowledge, irrespective of their representation modality, to derive a knowledge-mediated solution. This calls for selecting all knowledge elements (represented in different modalities) that are relevant to the solution of the problem at hand. Thus here we pursue the specification and implementation of such a knowledge-mediated solution using a triangulation approach leading to Knowledge Morphing. In this paper we present a tacit-explicit knowledge morphing (TEKM) …

Poster Session A: Wireless Local Loop And The Limited Mobility Issue In Pakistan, Tanveer -Ul- Haq, Syed Ismail Shah, Ahsan Ahmad Chaudhry, Muhammad Adeel, Abdul Samad, Jamil Ahmad Aug 2005

Poster Session A: Wireless Local Loop And The Limited Mobility Issue In Pakistan, Tanveer -Ul- Haq, Syed Ismail Shah, Ahsan Ahmad Chaudhry, Muhammad Adeel, Abdul Samad, Jamil Ahmad

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Wireless Local Loop (WLL) licenses have been issued to increase the tele-density in the country. Almost all WLL operators have chosen Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based technologies to implement their networks. Government policy allows limited mobility, which, if implemented literally, can severely degrade the performance of these networks. On the other hand, if certain conditions on mobility are relaxed, it can make the WLL systems potential competitors for the cellular systems present in the country. This paper discuses technical background of the limited mobility issues and proposes few potential solutions to solve this problem.

Keynote: Emerging Era Of Cooperative Empowerment: Grid, Peer-To-Peer, And Community Computing, Dr. Javed I. Khan

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

In this paper we discuss an emerging trend in high performance computing-the social or community computing. The emergence of screensaver computing, grid computing, peer-to-peer systems, and their demonstrated ability to garner computing power as potent as the supercomputers seems to be auspicious. In this paper we discuss the new phenomenon of community computing-including their potential applications in solving a new set of grand challenge problems. We also discuss the previously uncharted technological challenges architects of these new paradigms are addressing.

Keynote: The Segmentation Problem In Arabic Character Recognition: The State Of The Art, Ahmed M. Zeki Aug 2005

Keynote: The Segmentation Problem In Arabic Character Recognition: The State Of The Art, Ahmed M. Zeki

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Arabic characters are used in several languages other than Arabic, despite to this fact; Arabic Character Recognition (ACR) has not received enough interests by researchers. Little researchprogress has been achieved comparing to the one done on the Latin or Chinese and the solutions available in the market are still far from being perfect. However, recent years have shown a considerable increase in the number of research papers. The cursive nature of Arabic writing makes the process of recognition a very challenging one. Several methods to segment the Arabic words into characters have been proposed in the past two decades. This …

Ergonomics: Implications On Computer End-Users, Maheen Ghauri, Dr. Arshad Siddiqi Aug 2005

Ergonomics: Implications On Computer End-Users, Maheen Ghauri, Dr. Arshad Siddiqi

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Ergonomics is the application of scientific information related to humans to the design of objects, systems and environment for human use. The objective is to apply human characteristics to the design of computer-based work environments to reduce problems of people at work. Lack of ergonomics has serious repercussions on end-users, including physical and mental illnesses. Using ergonomics to design computer-intensive environments would maximize efficiency, productivity and job satisfaction of employees. Unfortunately, in the Government Sector in Pakistan, there is no application of ergonomics in computer-based environments, and this leads to inefficiencies, errors, and safety and health issues. The purpose of …

Making State Law In Federal Court, Benjamin C. Glassman Aug 2005

Making State Law In Federal Court, Benjamin C. Glassman

ExpressO

Abstract: We know from Erie R.R. Co. v. Tompkins that unless the Constitution or a federal statute provides the rule of decision in federal court, state law does. Contrary to the assumption of several recent commentators, however, Erie itself does not tell the federal court how to ascertain what is the law of the state, and the refrain that federal courts are to predict what the state supreme court would decide not only proves unhelpful upon examination, but also has tended to confuse the courts themselves in recent years. Yet federal courts routinely face questions of state law that admit …

Keynote: Research And Education In Telecommunication Engineering, Akhtar Kalam Aug 2005

Keynote: Research And Education In Telecommunication Engineering, Akhtar Kalam

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Telecommunications over the past one hundred years has had a major influence on the development of society. Telecommunications will continue to play an increasingly important role in nearly every human endeavour in all nations of the earth. Telecommunication industry is currently facing a technological revolution. In many countries, the number of cellular radio subscribers exceeds the subscribers of fixed telephony services. Internet technologies, such as VoIP and SIP, allow the convergence of traditional switched telephony services and data services of the internet to converge. New wireless access technologies compete and complete the services provided by the modern cellular radio networks. …

Assessing The Health Of Fringing Salt Marshes Along The Fore River And Its Tributaries, Pamela A. Morgan, Lucas Curci, Cayce Dalton, Jeremy Miller

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Casco Bay has experienced two significant oil spills in recent history - the Tamano Tanker spill in 1972 and the Julie N spill in 1996. In addition, the Fore River and its tributaries have experienced numerous small spills over the years, including the August 2002 fuel oil spill (2,900 gallons) and the April 2003 jet fuel spill (6,000 gallons). The impacts of these spills on the fringing salt marshes that line the edges of the Fore River and its tributaries are not well understood. Are these salt marshes resilient enough to withstand these impacts and still act as healthy marshes …
