Changing Ideals Of Womanhood During The Nineteenth-Century Woman Movement, Susan M. Cruea Sep 2005

Changing Ideals Of Womanhood During The Nineteenth-Century Woman Movement, Susan M. Cruea

University Writing Program Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the Woman Movement, an organization which was developed as a result of the effort of women to improve their status in and usefulness to society. The objectives of the movement were to initiate measures of charitable benevolence, temperance and social welfare and to initiate struggles for civic rights, social freedoms, higher education, remunerative occupations, and the right to vote. The setting of these goals resulted from women's rising awareness of the precariousness of their situation in the patriarchal society of the 1800s.

An Artificial Neural Network That Utilizes Hip Joint Actuations To Control Bifurcations And Chaos In A Passive Dynamic Bipedal Walking Model, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou Sep 2005

An Artificial Neural Network That Utilizes Hip Joint Actuations To Control Bifurcations And Chaos In A Passive Dynamic Bipedal Walking Model, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Chaos is a central feature of human locomotion and has been suggested to be a window to the control mechanisms of locomotion. In this investigation, we explored how the principles of chaos can be used to control locomotion with a passive dynamic bipedal walking model that has a chaotic gait pattern. Our control scheme was based on the scientific evidence that slight perturbations to the unstable manifolds of points in a chaotic system will promote the transition to new stable behaviors embedded in the rich chaotic attractor. Here we demonstrate that hip joint actuations during the swing phase can provide …

Termite (Isoptera) Diversity In Senegal And Their Damage On Reforestation Areas And Cultures, Makhfousse Sarr, Nguya K. Maniania, A. Russell-Smith, Abdoulaye Niassy Sep 2005

Termite (Isoptera) Diversity In Senegal And Their Damage On Reforestation Areas And Cultures, Makhfousse Sarr, Nguya K. Maniania, A. Russell-Smith, Abdoulaye Niassy

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies conducted from 1969 to 2000 on termite ecology and biology in Senegal revealed high termite diversity and an influence of climate and soil conditions on termite group distribution. Sixty-four termite species were recorded. Some were specific to ecologically similar zones while others were widely distributed. Some species, known to inhabit wet zones, were found in semi-arid zones where relic forest vegetation still exists. Nioro, in the central part of the country, seems to be the buffer zone between species to the north and south of Senegal. In Ferlo, an arid zone, Macrotermes species was in regression and the subsisting …

Repellency Of Essential Oils Of Some Plants From The Kenyan Coast Against Anopheles Gambiae, Josiah O. Odalo, Maurice O. Omolo, Hamisi Malebo, John Angira, Patrick M. Njeru, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Ahmed Hassanali Sep 2005

Repellency Of Essential Oils Of Some Plants From The Kenyan Coast Against Anopheles Gambiae, Josiah O. Odalo, Maurice O. Omolo, Hamisi Malebo, John Angira, Patrick M. Njeru, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Ahmed Hassanali

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Volatile oils extracted by hydrodistillation from six plant species growing in the Kenyan coast, Croton pseudopulchellus Pax, Mkilua fragrans Verdc. (Annonaceae), Endostemon tereticaulis (poir.) Ashby, Ocimum forskolei Benth., Ocimum fischeri Guerke and Plectranthus longipes Baker (Labiateae), were evaluated for repellency on forearms of human volunteers against Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto. All oils were found to be more repellent (RC50 range = 0.67-9.21 × 10-5 mg cm-2) than DEET (RC50 = 33 × 10-5 mg cm-2). The individual components of the oils were identified by GC-MS and GC co-injections with authentic standards. The repellency of 15 of the main constituents of …

Increased Risk Of Hiv In Women Experiencing Physical Partner Violence In Nairobi, Kenya, Karoline Fonck, Leye Els, Nancy Kidula, Jeconiah Ndinya-Achola, Marleen Temmerman Sep 2005

Increased Risk Of Hiv In Women Experiencing Physical Partner Violence In Nairobi, Kenya, Karoline Fonck, Leye Els, Nancy Kidula, Jeconiah Ndinya-Achola, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

As part of a study on etiology of sexually transmitted infections (STI) among 520 women presenting at the STI clinic in Nairobi, data on partner violence and its correlates were analyzed. Prevalence of lifetime physical violence was 26%, mainly by an intimate partner (74%). HIV seropositive women had an almost twofold increase in lifetime partner violence. Women with more risky sexual behavior such as early sexual debut, number of sex partners, history of condom use and of STI, experienced more partner violence. Parity and miscarriage were associated with a history of lifetime violence. We found an inverse association between schooling …
