Changes In Pain Perception In Women During And Following An Exhaustive Incremental Cycling Exercise, Daniel G. Drury, Katelyn Greenwood, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Kelli F. Koltyn

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Exercise has been found to alter pain sensitivity with a hypoalgesic response (i.e., diminished sensitivity to pain) typically reported during and/or following high intensity exercise. Most of this research, however, has involved the testing of men. Thus, the purpose of the following investigation was to examine changes in pain perception in women during and following exercise. Seventeen healthy female subjects (age 20.47±.87; VO2 peak 36.77± 4.95) volunteered to undergo pain assessment prior to, during, and after a graded exhaustive VO2 peak cycling challenge. Heart Rate (HR) and Oxygen Uptake (VO2) were monitored along with electro-diagnostic assessments of Pain Threshold (PT) …

Depression In Primary Care: Difficulties And Paradoxes, Haider Naqvi, Murad Moosa Khan Sep 2005

Depression In Primary Care: Difficulties And Paradoxes, Haider Naqvi, Murad Moosa Khan

Department of Psychiatry

The presentation of depression in primary care is in many ways different from that seen in psychiatric settings. The process of detection and treatment is also different. This is particularly so in developing countries like Pakistan, which has high prevalence rates of depression but poorly organized primary health care services and primary care physicians (PCPs) who have little psychiatric training, either at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. There is a need to review difficulties faced by primary care physicians in detection and management of depression. It is hoped this would lead to better and more effective management of depression at primary …

Women’S Rights And The Japanese State, 1880 To 1925, Barbara Molony Sep 2005

Women’S Rights And The Japanese State, 1880 To 1925, Barbara Molony

History

Recent scholarship on the relationship between women and the state in Japan has approached this question from a variety of perspectives. Among other subjects, scholars have looked at women as targets of government policies;1 agents of specific parts of the state;2 participants in organized or institutionalized politics or movements;3 members of groups that interacted with state power;4 and objects of discourses about women and the state.5 This chapter explores the relationship of women and the state by examining discourses on “women’s rights” in the late nineteenth century (especially the 1880s and 1890s) and the interwar …

Education Problems With Urban Migratory Children In China, Fei Yan Sep 2005

Education Problems With Urban Migratory Children In China, Fei Yan

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In China, due to the Residence Registration System and Segmented Governmental Management of Education, the educatioal problems with urban migratory children have been overlooked for a long time. The results are, on one hand, these children have no access to Public-Funded School because they are not categorized as local residents; on the other hand the illegal Schools for Migrant Workers' Children exist in many cities. The satisfactory solution to the problem will be a win-win process: the promotion of migratory children's education will not only benefit this minority group and the communities in which they live, but also contribute to …

Is Inter-Organizational Collaboration Always A Good Thing?, Richard A. Longoria Sep 2005

Is Inter-Organizational Collaboration Always A Good Thing?, Richard A. Longoria

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The human service literature suggests that the concept and outcomes of inter-organizational collaboration are not well understood. Nonetheless, inter-organizational collaboration has emerged as a statement of direction for social welfare policy and professional practice. In light of an unclear understanding of collaboration, this analysis suggests the concept has powerful symbolic qualities, which perpetuates its continued use. While the general notion of collaboration is promising, human service administrators and stakeholders must couple critical thinking and action to clarify the meaning, intent, application, and outcomes of inter-organizational collaboration. This article raises the question as to whether the popularity of inter-organization collaboration is …
