Legal Barriers To Alcohol Screening In Emergency Departments And Trauma Centers, Linda Chezem Sep 2005

Legal Barriers To Alcohol Screening In Emergency Departments And Trauma Centers, Linda Chezem

RCHE Publications

As described in more detail in the accompanying article by D’Onofrio and Degutis, many patients admitted to emergency departments (EDs) and trauma centers have positive blood alcohol levels at the time of their visit. (For more information on the distinction between EDs and trauma centers and the patients they treat, see the textbox “Emergency Departments Versus Trauma Centers.”) Research has shown that screening ED and trauma patients for alcohol use not only helps physicians make a more accurate diagnosis of patients’ conditions and decide on an appropriate treatment plans but also may allow for brief interventions and referrals to more …

Evolutionary Conservation Suggests A Regulatory Function Of Aug Triplets In 50 -Utrs Of Eukaryotic Genes, Alexander Churbanov, Igor B. Rogozin, Vladimir N. Babenko, Hesham Ali, Eugene V. Koonin Sep 2005

Evolutionary Conservation Suggests A Regulatory Function Of Aug Triplets In 50 -Utrs Of Eukaryotic Genes, Alexander Churbanov, Igor B. Rogozin, Vladimir N. Babenko, Hesham Ali, Eugene V. Koonin

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

By comparing sequences of human, mouse and rat orthologous genes, we show that in 50 -untranslated regions (50 -UTRs) of mammalian cDNAs but not in 30 - UTRs or coding sequences, AUG is conserved to a significantly greater extent than any of the other 63 nt triplets. This effect is likely to reflect, primarily, bona fide evolutionary conservation, rather than cDNA annotation artifacts, because the excess of conserved upstream AUGs (uAUGs) is seen in 50 -UTRs containing stop codons in-frame with the start AUG and many of the conserved AUGs are found in different frames, consistent with the location in …

Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello Sep 2005

Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello

Theses

Approaching outdoor adventure and challenge as a way to teach perseverance, skill, teamwork, leadership, and compassionate service was the brain-child of Kurt Hahn, a native to Berlin, Germany. Hahn became aware of the enormous impact that German submarines had on British ships in the North Sea during World War II. Drawing from his experiences as an educator, he and a team of others devised a program of intensive training for British Seamen. The program became known as Outward Bound, from the nautical term for a ship leaving port on a sea journey. (Sakofs& Armstrong, 1996)

Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili Sep 2005

Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili

Theses

An educational product has been developed based on a review of the literature in the field of art therapy with a focus on how art therapy may affect the communication of deaf children. A literature review has indicated that art therapy, when conducted with hearing and deaf children, has facilitated expression and communication. This has occurred through transference of feelings from the right, visualspatial and creative hemisphere of the brain to the left hemisphere, which includes conceptual and intellectual thinking as well as the 'language function.' Based on these findings, it is projected that art therapy may alleviate some of …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a divergent role in both cell survival and cell death during ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and associated inflammation. In this study, ROS generation by activated macrophages evoked an intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) transient in endothelial cells that was ablated by a combination of superoxide dismutase and an anion channel blocker. [Ca2+]i store depletion, but not extracellular Ca2+ chelation, prevented [Ca2+]i elevation in response to O2*- that was inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) dependent, and cells lacking the three InsP3 receptor (InsP3R) isoforms failed to display the [Ca2+]i transient. Importantly, the O2*--triggered Ca2+ mobilization preceded a loss in mitochondrial membrane …
