On May 6 and 7, 2005, Trans Politics, Social Change, and Justice brought over four hundred trans people and allies into a single building. A feeling of electricity was everywhere. Not because this was the first trans conference — it was not. Nor was it the largest. What participants felt came from the fact that the real lives of trans people were being addressed by trans people. Poverty And Fertility In The American South, Leonard M. Lopoo

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This project first reports descriptive evidence of the characteristics of mothers in the American South and compares them to mothers in other regions of the country. Women in the South (and West) tend to have their children at younger ages than those in the Midwest and Northeast. Mothers in the South (and West) also have much lower levels of education and are more likely to be African American or Hispanic compared to women in the Midwest and Northeast. Next, this paper attempts to link the characteristics of the mothers in the American South to the high rates of poverty there. …

Mothers’ Support Options During Childbirth: A Survey Of Hospital Obstetrical Units In The Southeastern Region Of The United States, Hila J. Spear

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined hospital policies and procedures related to maternal support during childbirth and the promotion of breastfeeding among mothers who give birth by cesarean. Overall, the findings revealed hospital-based practices and protocols that facilitated positive chibirth experiences and that were supportive of breastfeeding for mothers regardless of mode of delivery.

With the promotion of evidence-based practice, nurses individually and collectively are asking critical questions of clinical practice and have steadily moved away from a “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mentality. This presentation focuses on the importance of adopting a consistent evidence-based approach to nursing practice and the related challenges and benefits.
