Publiczne I Prywatne Wydatki Na Ochronę Zdrowia W Polsce. Ile Nas Kosztuje Ochrona Zdrowia?, Kazimierz Ryć, Zofia Skrzypczak

European Management Studies

The article discusses the sources of financing health care in Poland in the years 1995-2003. Though the determination of the level of financing from public sources is doubtless, the determination of the level of financing from private sources is not unambiguous. In numerous Polish publications and in the information in publications of international statistics private financing in Poland is identified usually with private expenditure of households on health care, estimated on the basis of the results of examining budgets of households. The authors have attempted at presenting that such estimates of the level of private financing are methodologically inaccurate and …

European Management Studies

The stronger relationship between modern medicine and economical aspects, the improvement of health care with limited materials and financial means make economical analysis more important on free market. "The constant rise of expenses on medical services turned the relationship between the effectiveness of medical treatment and its costs into a point of interest of doctors, medical care managers and the whole society. A challenge for medical economists is the utilization of financial means which enables the best performance of medical aims. Therefore, Health Care Managers should have knowledge concerning clinical and economical effectiveness diagnostic and therapeutic intervention" (Fedorowski, Niżankowski, eds. …

Publications and Research

Background We examined female sedentary smokers' additional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk behaviors and their associations to smoking cessation. Methods This study was part of a randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of exercise and nicotine gum in smoking cessation. Included in the analyses were 148 participants. Dietary habits and alcohol consumption were measured as additional CVD risk behaviors. High-fat diet and heavy alcohol use were considered those risk behaviors. Nicotine dependence, length of the longest quit attempt, depressive symptoms, self-efficacy, and education were examined as other baseline variables. Abstinence from tobacco was recorded through 12 months. Results Diet was related …

The Significant Other Version Of The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (Pcs-S): Preliminary Validation, Annmarie Cano, Michelle T. Leonard, Aleda Franz

Psychology Faculty Research Publications

Researchers have hypothesized that pain catastrophizing has a social function. Although work has focused on the catastrophizing of individuals with chronic pain (ICPs), little is known about the pain catastrophizing of their significant others. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a revised version of the original PCS [Sullivan MJL, Bishop S, Pivik J. The pain catastrophizing scale: development and validation. Psychol Assess 1995; 7: 432–524.] in which individuals were instructed to report on their own catastrophizing about their significant other’s pain. In Study 1, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to determine the factor structure …

Cityland – Vol. 2, No. 11, Center For New York City Law

CityLand - 2005

The December 2005 issue of CityLand highlights significant land use and preservation actions across New York City. The City Council approved rezonings in South Park Slope, Olinville (Bronx), and two Staten Island neighborhoods (Bay Terrace and Oakwood), aimed at curbing overdevelopment and preserving neighborhood character. The Council also overrode Mayor Bloomberg’s veto to reject the landmark designation of the Austin Nichols warehouse in Williamsburg. The Planning Commission approved a 718-space garage adjacent to the High Line and a new Business Improvement District in Flatbush. BSA decisions included variances for a NoHo mixed-use building, a West Village nursing home, and a …

Exploring Disability And Poverty In Nepal: An Application Of The Capability Approach, Patricia Welch Saleeby Dec 2005

Exploring Disability And Poverty In Nepal: An Application Of The Capability Approach, Patricia Welch Saleeby

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine the relationships between disability and poverty in Nepal. Linkages between disability, poverty, and deprivation are explored to develop an in-depth understanding of these relationships, to recommend strategies for intervention, and ultimately to improve the situations of individuals and their families experiencing disability and poverty. Since traditional poverty measures such as income and consumption do not fully capture the multi-dimensional construct of poverty, a capability approach was used to further an understanding of the relationships between disability and deprivation at individual and household levels and to address three research questions. What are …

Working Paper No. 30, On The Origins Of Laissez-Faire, Thomas Breaden Dec 2005

Working Paper No. 30, On The Origins Of Laissez-Faire, Thomas Breaden

Working Papers in Economics

This paper traces laissez-faire back to its French roots, and in particular, to its origins as a political philosophy evoking an economic approach. Related to his visit to France in the 1760s and his personal contacts, we suggest that Adam Smith serves as the link between selected French thinkers and what after Smith’s Inquiry would be widely accepted as a quintessentially Anglo-Saxon tradition in economics. Exploring doctrine, we offer linkages between F. Quesnay, A. Turgot, J.J. Rousseau, and Smith’s ideas. Similarities in Smith’s understanding and the French exponents regarding economic activity vis-a- vis a public sector are presented, along with …

Detection Of Pathogenic Bacteria And Fecal Enterococci In Recreational Water With An Evanescent Wave Fiber Optic Biosensor, Maria Theresa Trindade Dec 2005

Detection Of Pathogenic Bacteria And Fecal Enterococci In Recreational Water With An Evanescent Wave Fiber Optic Biosensor, Maria Theresa Trindade

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Development of a rapid method for the detection of fecal enterococci and pathogenic microorganisms in beach water was attempted utilizing an evanescent wave fiber optic biosensor. Various assay formats including a sandwich immunoassay were tested in the development of a rapid assay. Fluorophore labeled antibodies were used for specific detection of bacteria captured or adsorbed directly to the surface of a polystyrene fiber optic waveguide. Binding of the fluorescent labeled antibody to its specific target or binding of a fluorescent labeled anti-IgG within 100-1000 nm of the waveguide surface caused excitation of the fluorescent conjugate resulting in a quantifiable signal. …
