Persuasive Email Messages For Patient Communication, Muhammad Walji, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Todd Johnson, Elmer Bernstam, Jiajie Zhang Jan 2005

Persuasive Email Messages For Patient Communication, Muhammad Walji, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Todd Johnson, Elmer Bernstam, Jiajie Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

To improve health and reduce costs, we need to encourage patients to make better health care decisions. Since email is widely available, it may be useful for patient-directed interventions. However, we know little about how the contents of an email message can influence a health-related decision. We propose a model to understand how patients may process persuasive email messages.

Home To Jesus (Chapter 9 On Finding Our Way Home), Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2005

Home To Jesus (Chapter 9 On Finding Our Way Home), Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Like so many, I was raised in a religious home- praying before meals, attending Sunday services, seeking to follow God's will for my life. I remember getting two Christmas presents in ninth grade-a new pair of skis and a new Bible. Honestly, I was more thrilled with the Bible than with the skis (though both gifts made me ecstatic about my generous parents for a few days). I remember wondering in those youthful years why anyone would choose a life apart from Jesus. As I grew toward adulthood I began to understand their reasons. The faith I had loved …

'The Steps To Respect' Program Uses A Multilevel Approach To Reduce Playground Bullying And Destructive Bystander Behaviors, Karin Frey, Leihua Van Schoiack Edstrom, Miriam Hirschstein Jan 2005

'The Steps To Respect' Program Uses A Multilevel Approach To Reduce Playground Bullying And Destructive Bystander Behaviors, Karin Frey, Leihua Van Schoiack Edstrom, Miriam Hirschstein

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Bullying reduction efforts benefit from combining universal and selected interventions. All children are involved occasionally as aggressor, victim or encouraging bystander, and some children are frequently involved. Bullying behavior is amply rewarded in the school environment. The Steps to Respect program aims to reduce rewards by increasing adult intervention and support for socially responsible student behavior. Cognitive-behavioral classroom curricula address peer norms, assertiveness, and general social-emotional skills. A random control trial showed decreases in playground bullying and negative bystander behavior after one year. Longitudinal analyses showed declines in all five problem behaviors after two years. Results were strongest when teachers …

The Nature, Function, And Purpose Of The Term Sheol In The Torah, Prophets, And Writings, Eriks Galenieks Jan 2005

The Nature, Function, And Purpose Of The Term Sheol In The Torah, Prophets, And Writings, Eriks Galenieks

Dissertations

The fact that scholars depict Sheol either as the underworld where the dead continue their existence or simply the grave has resulted in contradictory conclusions, fierce polemic, and unremitting disputes. This lack of consensus makes it imperative to justify another approach, which is more comprehensive in its entirety in comparison with the earlier attempts that sought to determine the meaning of the term Sheol mainly by exploring its etymology and various nonbiblical sources.

Unlike the previous studies, this exegetical research systematically examines all the sixty-six references to the term Sheol in the Hebrew Bible by almost exclusively focusing on its …

Regional Governance Reconsidered, Janice C. Griffith Jan 2005

Regional Governance Reconsidered, Janice C. Griffith

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The global economy’s regional scale of operation, social equity concerns, and environmental degradation that transcends local governmental boundary lines propel an examination of whether twenty-first century conditions call for the creation of regional governmental structures in the United States. This article argues that the need to spur economic competitiveness and metropolitan-wide planning and growth management will impel the formation of new regional governance structures. Forging stronger connections between central cities and surrounding suburban strongholds, however, will not be easy. The article discusses the many barriers that prevent fragmented local governments from reaping the benefits of regional cooperation, including localism, state …

Living Wages And The Retention Of Homecare Workers In San Francisco, Candace Howes Jan 2005

Living Wages And The Retention Of Homecare Workers In San Francisco, Candace Howes

Economics Faculty Publications

This study records the impact on workforce retention of the nearly doubling of wages for homecare workers in San Francisco County over a 52-month period. Using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis I find that the annual retention rate of new providers rose from 39 percent to 74 percent following significant wage and benefit increases and that a $1 increase in the wage rate from $8 an hour – the national average wage for homecare – would increase retention by 17 percentage points. I also show that adding health insurance increases the retention rate by 21 percentage points.

The Flatow Amendment And State-Sponsored Terrorism, Joseph Keller Jan 2005

The Flatow Amendment And State-Sponsored Terrorism, Joseph Keller

Seattle University Law Review

This article argues that the Flatow Amendment does not provide a cause of action against a foreign state itself and, further, that judicial consultation of the State Department is appropriate and desirable in cases affecting foreign policy, such as those requiring interpretation of the Flatow Amendment. Part I analyzes early judicial interpretation of the Flatow Amendment, examine and critique the methodology of Cronin and its progeny, explain application of the Charming Betsy principle to this line of cases, and conclude that the Flatow Amendment provides a cause of action against the officials, employees, or agents of a foreign state, but …

The Right To Float On By: Why The Washington Legislature Should Expand Recreational Access To Washington's Rivers And Streams, Dustin Trowbridge Till

Seattle University Law Review

This article surveys the contemporary status of Washington's navigability doctrine and public trust laws and proposes a solution to the increased conflicts between riparian property owners and recreational river users. Part II addresses the federal navigability jurisprudence that establishes the minimum standards for determining whether a river is navigable. Part III surveys the law of navigability and the public trust doctrine in Washington. Part IV highlights the importance of recreation to Washington residents. Part V analyzes how other jurisdictions, particularly Montana, have resolved conflicts between recreationalists and riparian property owners. Part VI argues that Washington should adopt a recreational boat …

An Exceptional Case: How Washington Should Amend Its Procedure For Imposing An Exceptional Sentence In Response To Blakely V. Washington, Jason Amala, Jason Laurine

Seattle University Law Review

This article reviews the Blakely decision and the Washington Legislature's response in S.B. 5477. Part II discusses the problem that Blakely created for Washington's sentencing guidelines system. Part III analyzes the judicial advisory and bifurcated trial proposals and explains why Washington wisely adopted the bifurcated trial approach. Part IV identifies key issues that are raised by using a bifurcated trial and analyzes how S.B. 5477 addresses, or fails to address, those issues. Finally, Part V concludes by suggesting that the legislature should have provided for the following in its bill responding to the Blakely decision: a provision allowing bifurcation for …

The Afterlife Of The Meretricious Relationship Doctrine: Applying The Doctrine Post Mortem, John E. Wallace Jan 2005

The Afterlife Of The Meretricious Relationship Doctrine: Applying The Doctrine Post Mortem, John E. Wallace

Seattle University Law Review

The meretricious relationship doctrine has received increased attention in recent years largely due to its application to same-sex couples' and the national debate on same-sex marriage. However, the importance of the doctrine, applicable also to heterosexual couples, extends beyond this recent focus. The number of unmarried, committed persons cohabitating has been increasing rapidly. Over eleven million people reported being unmarried but living with a partner in 2000, an increase of seventy-two percent since 1990. As the number of unmarried persons cohabitating increases, so will the importance of the doctrine. The meretricious relationship doctrine is a judicially-created equitable doctrine that allows …

The Code For Corporate Citizenship: States Should Amend Statutes Governing Corporations And Enable Corporations To Be Good Citizens, Elisa Scalise Jan 2005

The Code For Corporate Citizenship: States Should Amend Statutes Governing Corporations And Enable Corporations To Be Good Citizens, Elisa Scalise

Seattle University Law Review

Corporations are important social actors. They are created by law and create products, services, jobs, and wealth upon which modem societies rely. Investments injected by corporations bring jobs, capital, and technology to communities, thereby raising living standards and creating derivative rights such as education, health and housing, and political freedoms. Modem corporations allow entrepreneurs to raise massive amounts of capital for large projects and research, which results in innovation and a wide range of products and services. However, these same corporations can also cause social harm. They are structured in such a way that it is possible for agents in …

The Problem Of New Uses, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2005

The Problem Of New Uses, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Discovering new uses for drugs that are already on the market seems like it ought to be the low-lying fruit of biopharmaceutical research and development (R&D). Firms have already made significant investments in developing these drugs and bringing them to market, including testing them in clinical trials, shepherding them through the FDA regulatory approval process, building production facilities, and training sales staff to market them to physicians. By this point, the drugs have begun to enjoy goodwill among patients and physicians and casual observations in the course of clinical experience may point to potential new uses. One might expect that …

D. A. Kolb's Theory Of Experiential Learning - Implications For The Development Of Music Theory Instructional Material, Michael Lively

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Undergraduate students often find music theory courses to be among the most difficult and sometimes most frustrating experiences of their early college careers. The difficulty may stem from the tendency of music theory instruction to rely heavily upon the learner's ability to process information with abstract modes of cognition. Many students have either limited experience with abstract intellectual tasks or limited aptitude for cognitive abstraction. This essay will explore the process of adapting music theory instructional material for the learning styles of individual students.
