H-1b Worker Visas: Past, Present, And Future, Keith Gaines Drago Jan 2005

H-1b Worker Visas: Past, Present, And Future, Keith Gaines Drago

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to overview the past, present, and future of the H-IB temporary non-immigrant specialty workers visa and to identify what events have caused and continue to cause significant changes in its policies. These significant changes entail the implications the H-IB visa has for employers and managers when deciding a long term recruiting policy. The information used in this study was gathered from multiple statistical government internet sites, such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. The data was also made available through immigration web sites and testimony at …

Dignity In Race Jurisprudence, Christopher A. Bracey Jan 2005

Dignity In Race Jurisprudence, Christopher A. Bracey

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Racial justice demands dignity; the acknowledgment and affirmation of the equal humanity of people of color. Denying dignity on the basis of color creates racial subordination, which triggers dignitary harms such as individual acts of racism and communal exclusion leading to diminished health, wealth, income, employment and social status. The legal recognition of dignity is therefore a prerequisite to political and social equality. For Americans of African descent, dignity was long denied by the legal endorsement of slavery and the degrading policies of segregation. The struggle to be treated equally human eventually found success in landmark cases such as Brown …

Protein Synthesis Required For Long-Term Memory Is Induced By Pkc Activation On Days Before Associative Learning, D. L. Alkon, H. Epstein, A. Kuzirian, M. C. Bennett, T. J. Nelson Jan 2005

Protein Synthesis Required For Long-Term Memory Is Induced By Pkc Activation On Days Before Associative Learning, D. L. Alkon, H. Epstein, A. Kuzirian, M. C. Bennett, T. J. Nelson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Protein synthesis has long been known to be required for associative learning to consolidate into long-term memory. Here we demonstrate that PKC isozyme activation on days before training can induce the synthesis of proteins necessary and sufficient for subsequent long-term memory consolidation. Bryostatin (Bryo), a macrolide lactone with efficacy in subnanomolar concentrations and a potential therapeutic for Alzheimer's disease, is a potent activator of PKC, some of whose isozymes undergo prolonged activation after associative learning. Under normal conditions, two training events with paired visual and vestibular stimuli cause short-term memory of the mollusc Hermissenda that lasts ≈7 min. However, after …

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright Jan 2005

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright

Honors Theses

This purpose of this study was to quantify both behavioral and biological markers of stress (i.e. distress vocalizations, plasma corticosterone) in the chick stress-separation paradigm. In this study, chicks were isolated from companions for either 5,10,15,20,40, or 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were recorded. In addition, one group was tested in the presence of social companions for 60 minutes. Blood was collected from half of the subjects immediately following the testing period and was also collected in a no-test group to establish plasma corticosterone basal levels. Isolation produced a significant elevation in distress vocalizations and corticosterone. The pattern of distress …

A Study Of The Effects Of The 2004 Tsunami On Coral Reefs And Fisheries Of The Indian Ocean, Joseph Lane Campbell

Honors Theses

This thesis serves as a broad-scale review of the effects of the tsunami on the coral reefs and the fisheries of the affected Indian Ocean region. The main goals were to 1) use my research from a recolonization project completed May 2004 as a basis for predictiverecovery models for the coral reefs, 2) review and summarize the newly available literature of the tsunami effects on coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and 3) predict the future of the Indian Ocean fisheries based on the review of the tsunami effects on human and fishery communities, using selected species as models. It …

Civil War Medicine: Crisis And Heroism In The Medical Profession, 1861 - 1865, Diana Frances Semmes

Honors Theses

This thesis uses a variety of sources to look at the medical profession during the Civil War era. Both primary sources and secondary sources provide information on the perspectives of the key players during the period as well as an understanding of the knowledge present at that time and the methods and practices employed. Most of the research has been done using the J. D. Williams Library on the University of Mississippi main campus though it has been supplemented by books in my own personal collection, items loaned from Dr. Neff’s collection, online resources such as the Library of Congress …

Ecotourism In Costa Rica: A Study Of The Viabilities And Impacts Of Three Ecotourism Models, Corey Harmon Rogers Jan 2005

Ecotourism In Costa Rica: A Study Of The Viabilities And Impacts Of Three Ecotourism Models, Corey Harmon Rogers

Honors Theses

This paper examines three ecotourism endeavors in Costa Rica in order to answer the following question: can an enterprise fulfill all the definitional requirements for ecotourism and at the same time be both economically and environmentally viable? I first provide a discussion of the origins and conceptual views of ecotourism, then chart the evolution of ecotourism in Costa Rica. Next, three case studies are presented, each representing a different ecotourism model found in the country. Data presented in the case studies were compiled from site-specific primary data sets and interviews, Costa Rican government primary sources, and academic publications. For each …

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to prove that the arts should be a major component in every student’s education. Statistics, research findings, and case studies from throughout the years were compared and compiled together in order to make a strong argument in favor of the arts. The National Art Education Association website provided many statistics as did the National Center for Education Statistics. Two of the specific studies presented in this thesis came from Champions of Change, a collection of seven major studies done by professional academics. It was produced by the Arts Education Partnership, the President’s Committee on the Arts and …

Using Incomplete Citation Data For Medline Results Ranking, Jorge R Herskovic, Elmer V Bernstam Jan 2005

Using Incomplete Citation Data For Medline Results Ranking, Jorge R Herskovic, Elmer V Bernstam

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Information overload is a significant problem for modern medicine. Searching MEDLINE for common topics often retrieves more relevant documents than users can review. Therefore, we must identify documents that are not only relevant, but also important. Our system ranks articles using citation counts and the PageRank algorithm, incorporating data from the Science Citation Index. However, citation data is usually incomplete. Therefore, we explore the relationship between the quantity of citation information available to the system and the quality of the result ranking. Specifically, we test the ability of citation count and PageRank to identify "important articles" as defined by experts …
