Psychometric Characteristics Of The Multidimensional Anxiety Scale For Children In Adolescent Samples, Nicole Carlson Jan 2005

Psychometric Characteristics Of The Multidimensional Anxiety Scale For Children In Adolescent Samples, Nicole Carlson

Honors Program Theses

Most children and adolescents, on any given day, experience some levels of anxiety. They worry about school, about friendships, and about their physical appearance. For most children and adolescents, these worries are considered a normal part of growing older. ln some cases, these worries take control over the child's life and seriously affect the normal developmental process. When the symptoms of anxiety become excessive and debilitating, a person may be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. ln the child and adolescent literature, the three primary internalizing disorders are anxiety disorders, somatization disorders, and depressive disorders. This paper focuses on the anxiety …

Factors Affecting Judicial Decision Making, Brooke Marie Hansen Jan 2005

Factors Affecting Judicial Decision Making, Brooke Marie Hansen

Honors Program Theses

The U.S. court system relies on the discretion of judges for most sentencing decisions. Even when there are sentencing guidelines, the judicial decision making process requires judges to use their discretion to determine the actual sentence. Personality characteristics play a role in juror decision making, as shown by studies of the effect of authoritarianism on verdicts (Narby, Culter, & Moran, 1993). Little research has focused on the personality characteristics of judges and what role they play in sentencing decisions. Judicial decision making is a debated topic as demonstrated by the fact that the Supreme Court heard the case Blakely v. …

African American Breast Cancer Health Disparities, Theresa Lynn Gaul Jan 2005

African American Breast Cancer Health Disparities, Theresa Lynn Gaul

Honors Program Theses

Health disparities are "the differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of cancer and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States" (National Cancer Institute [NCI], 2002). Racial and ethnic minorities experience serious disparities in health access and outcomes. Disparities in the burden of death and illness experienced by African Americans in particular, as compared with our nation's population as a whole, are particularly striking. There are a variety of factors contributing to these inequalities. The purpose of this report is to examine these factors and the consequential effects on the African American's …

Treatment Of Erectile Dysfunction: A Review Of Literature And National Survey Of Urologists, Mark E. Thomsen

Honors Program Theses

Toe treatment of erectile dysfunction has improved dramatically over the past decade, including the revolutionary introduction of PDE-5 inhibitors (i.e. sildenafil citrate or Viagra). As improved treatments have been presented to the public, an increasing number of men are seeking treatment for ED. This national survey of urologists is intended to address specific questions regarding how urologists make decisions in treating erectile dysfunction. ln addition to conventional areas of interest, such as the impact of side effects and determining the motivation for ED patients to seek treatment, this survey addresses how the treatment of ED relates to the specific condition …

Mechanistic Differences In Rna-Dependent Dna Polymerization And Fidelity Between Murine Leukemia Virus And Hiv-1 Reverse Transcriptases, Mark Skasko, Kellie K. Weiss, Holly M. Reynolds, Varuni Jamburuthugoda, Kwi Lee, Baek Kim Jan 2005

Mechanistic Differences In Rna-Dependent Dna Polymerization And Fidelity Between Murine Leukemia Virus And Hiv-1 Reverse Transcriptases, Mark Skasko, Kellie K. Weiss, Holly M. Reynolds, Varuni Jamburuthugoda, Kwi Lee, Baek Kim

Biology

We compared the mechanistic and kinetic properties of murine leukemia virus (MuLV) and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptases (RTs) during RNA-dependent DNA polymerization and mutation synthesis using pre-steady-state kinetic analysis. First, MuLV RT showed 6.5-121.6-fold lower binding affinity (Kd) to deoxynucleotide triphosphate (dNTP) substrates than HIV-1 RT, although the two RTs have similar incorporation rates (kpol). Second, compared with HIV-1 RT, MuLV RT showed dramatic reduction during multiple dNTP incorporations at low dNTP concentrations. Presumably, due to its low dNTP binding affinity, the dNTP binding step becomes rate-limiting in the multiple rounds of the dNTP incorporation by …

Creating Breadth In Business Education Through Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey, Louise M. Illes, Gregory R. Berry Jan 2005

Creating Breadth In Business Education Through Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey, Louise M. Illes, Gregory R. Berry

Faculty Publications

We argue service-learning pedagogy and the associated educational experiences provide a partial solution to the significant problem of narrowness in business education. Servicelearning pedagogy seeks to balance academic rigor with practical relevance, set in a context of civic engagement, which furnishes students with a broader and, we argue, richer, educational experience. We present four specific critiques of business education: (1) the business curriculum focuses on functional and discrete rather than cross-functional and holistic knowledge; (2) coursework emphasizes practical problem-solving “tool kits” rather than deep theoretical knowledge; (3) the underlying paradigm of business education views humanity and human interactions in purely …

The Retail Wave: A Look Into The Future Of The Apparel Industry, Sarah Clemens Jan 2005

The Retail Wave: A Look Into The Future Of The Apparel Industry, Sarah Clemens

Honors Program Theses

Where is the apparel industry headed? The need for retailers to diversify and understand current consumer needs will be the focus for survival as we move through the information age. Technology has and will continue to push the market into new ideas that allow niche retailers to stay slightly ahead of the game. Software to meet apparel consumer needs may be the answer for high end retailers. These retailers have an opportunity to embrace the consumers' internal problems by affirming that problems such as anxiety, obesity and depression exist. Software could help reach not only the consumer's money, but their …

Psychology

In this study we examined the effects of exposure to the antiandrogenic fungicide vindozolin (Vz) on the development of two sex-differentiated behaviors that are organized by the perinatal actions of androgens. Pregnant Long-Evans rats were administered a daily oral dose of 0, 1.5, 3, 6, or 12 mg/kg Vz from the 14th day of gestation through posnatal day (PND)3. The social play behavior of juvenile offspring was examined on PND22 and again on PND34 during play sessions with a same-sex littermate. After they reached adulthood, the male offspring were examined with the ex copula penile reflex procedure to assess erectile …

Reforming Higher Education In Saudi Arabia: The Use Of Telecommunications Technology, Abdullah Altowjry Jan 2005

Reforming Higher Education In Saudi Arabia: The Use Of Telecommunications Technology, Abdullah Altowjry

Theses

Internet technology has become a powerful tool since its advent. Online learning is a byproduct of Internet usage and is instrumental in higher education. In the United States, the use of online learning, also known as distance learning, is widespread. It is used in almost all educational institutions. Even third world countries, which are traditionally lagging behind in any educational or sociological enterprise, are now attempting to catch up with distance learning education. Some educational institutions in the Middle East, for example, have been using distance learning in place of traditional classroom instruction. In Saudi Arabia, there is a great …

Analytical Tools For Studying Phosphorus And Nitrogen Lake Nutrient Dynamics And Their Application To The Field, Ivan Mihajlov Jan 2005

Analytical Tools For Studying Phosphorus And Nitrogen Lake Nutrient Dynamics And Their Application To The Field, Ivan Mihajlov

Honors Theses

In order to evaluate the causes and conditions that lead to cyanobacteria blooms in northern temperate lakes, studies of nutrients such as total phosphorus, total nitrogen, phosphate, and nitrate are necessary. Sensitive, environmentally friendly and cost-effective techniques were developed to detect ppb-level nitrates and phosphates in the lake water. Phosphate was analyzed by luminol chemiluminescence, while the quantification of nitrate was performed by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using indirect UV detection, with a background electrolyte consisting of pyromellitic acid, hexamethonium hydroxide and triethanolamine. Sample injection methods for the CE were optimized for the analysis in Belgrade Lakes, Maine. Vertical profiles of …

Automated Extraction Of Disease-Gene Relationships From Medline, Jennifer R. Paine Jan 2005

Automated Extraction Of Disease-Gene Relationships From Medline, Jennifer R. Paine

Theses

The increasing amount of scientific information available to researchers in the form of biomedical literature is beginning to bring about a need for the development of tools to extract information automatically from these sources. One segment of information of particular interest to researchers is the linkage information between genes and diseases. These linkages can help researchers interpret large-scale genomics studies as well as make logical connections between gene expression levels and certain phenotypes. To make the finding and collecting of this information practical, automated methods of information extraction are required. In this paper, I propose a method for the automated …

Belief In A Just World, School Stress And Academic Success, Elizabeth A. Hepworth Jan 2005

Belief In A Just World, School Stress And Academic Success, Elizabeth A. Hepworth

Theses

Belief in a just world, a construct first introduced by Lerner (1978), has been the topic of psychological research for the past forty years (Lerner, 1965; Rubin & Peplau, 1973; Tomaka & Blascovich, 1994; Dalbert, 1999; Hafer, 2000; Furnham, 2003). Much of the research conducted on the belief in a just world focused on its cognitive use as a protective mechanism. For example, Belief in a Just World (BJW) has been positively correlated with helping behavior (Beirhoff, 2002), commitment to long range goals (Hafer, 2000), positive well-being (Dalbert, 2000), and negatively associated with stress (Takoma & Blascovich, 1994). In the …

0.18?M High Performance Cmos Process Optimization, Zeki Gurcan

Theses

Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) is the most widely used discrete structure in the semiconductor sector. Low static power consumption, full-rail high/low voltage transfer characteristics as well as its ease of scaling creates the perfect combination for the high performance integrated circuits (IC). Today’s challenging semiconductor industry profile brings the deadlines earlier than expected as a result of the shorter time-to- market plans as well as limited lifetime on sophisticated ICs. Process optimization for manufacturability is one of the most challenging issues in the semiconductor industry since the adoption of the sub-micron CMOS technology. Process technologies often times gets released …

Family And Cultural Issues In At Service Delivery, Howard P. Parette, Tom Nurse Jan 2005

Family And Cultural Issues In At Service Delivery, Howard P. Parette, Tom Nurse

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Effective assistive technology planning and decision making for children and youth with disabilities should include careful consideration of family and cultural factors. Inclusion of the family when considering assistive technology needs of the child is the key to identifying important family and cultural perspectives that can “make or break” the successful integration of assistive technology in the home, school, and community.

Despite the recognition that families should be integral to the AT decision-making process, family and professional partnerships have often been difficult to establish in practice. Cultural and language barriers may compound the difficulty of forging a strong connection between …

Peeling An Orange And Finding An Apple – Book Review Of Joseph Magnet And Dwight Dorey Eds., Aboriginal Rights Litigation (Markham: Lexisnexis Butterworths, 2003), Constance Macintosh

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Aboriginal Rights Litigation suffers from a certain amount of thematic confusion: the reading experience is akin to peeling an orange and finding an apple inside-- a lovely piece of fruit but not the one you expected. And if you wanted to make orange juice, you are simply out of luck.

The Civilization Of The Criminal Law, Christopher Slobogin Jan 2005

The Civilization Of The Criminal Law, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law Review

The boundaries of the criminal justice system are eroding. A vast amount of relatively innocuous behavior is now criminalized. The line between criminal penalties and administrative sanctions is dissolving, as criminal law relaxes its mens rea requirements and government bureaucracies aggressively pursue regulatory violations. Distinctions between criminal and civil forfeiture, contempt, and deportation proceedings have been vanishingly subtle for some time. Perhaps the most serious assault on the integrity of today's criminal justice system, however, is the increasing prominence of the "dangerousness criterion" as justification for confinement by the government. Governmental deprivations of liberty have usually been the province of …

Canons Of Construction And The Elusive Quest For Neutral Reasoning, James J. Brudney, Corey Ditslear Jan 2005

Canons Of Construction And The Elusive Quest For Neutral Reasoning, James J. Brudney, Corey Ditslear

Vanderbilt Law Review

Federal statutes, like the lawmaking enterprise itself, are seldom models of efficiency. Whether through inevitable laxity or conscious choice, Congress when legislating leaves a fair number of gaps in the meaning of its complex regulatory schemes. In filling those gaps with case-specific interpretive responses, federal courts perform an important policymaking function.

Such policymaking has lately generated increased concerns about the politicization of the judiciary. Scholars using social science techniques have contributed to the image of courts as policymakers, by establishing that judges' political party affiliation and ideological orientation are at times significant predictors of voting behavior. Presidents and senators have …

Effect Of Anti-Oxidants On Endocrine And Metabolic Parameters Of Diabetic Rats, Maryam Suroor Al Shamsi Jan 2005

Effect Of Anti-Oxidants On Endocrine And Metabolic Parameters Of Diabetic Rats, Maryam Suroor Al Shamsi

Theses

Diabetes mellitus is recognized as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. About 5 to 6% of the world population suffers from this disease and the number of people diagnosed with diabetes is rapidly increasing. Diabetes has been demonstrated to be associated with oxidative stress and hyperglycemia, one of the most important indictors of oxidative stress. Normally the endogenous mechanisms of enzymes and antioxidants are able to destroy the reactive species and create a balance between antioxidant and free radicals. In diabetes, the oxidative stress is increased due to the deficiency in the antioxidant defense. …

Identification of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in the UAE

By

Khawla Hamad Mohd Al-Areef Al-Dhaheri

Abstract

Various patho-groups of Escherichia coli strains are important causes of diarrheal diseases worldwide. Among these strains Shiga toxin producing isolates are particularly important. They are carried by various animals and upon infection, in humans, they may cause serious bloody diarrhea, and in some cases even life threatening sequels as hemolytic uremic syndrome. However, these infections are often under-diagnosed due to the fact that pathogenic strains do not differ from their nonpathogenic counterparts in characters investigated by standard microbiological techniques. Consequently, they can only be …

Effect Of Some Medicinal Plants In U.A.E. On Glucose Homeostasis In Rats, Fatma Khadem Al-Ghaithi

Theses

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine diseases in the world that affects almost 6% of the world population. The treatment of diabetes mellitus takes three main forms. First, diet and exercise. Secondly, insulin therapy, and thirdly, using hypoglycaemic agents (suiphonylureas and biguanides). Many of these agents are not very effective in lowering glucose level in diabetic patients and are either too expensive or have undesirable side effects and contraindications. As a result of this, the search for effective drugs for the treatment of diabetes mellitus continues.

Before the introduction of insulin in 1922, the treatment of diabetes …
