Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new network centric architecture that can be used by first responders to effectively respond to crisis situations. The powerful network-centric concept originally developed for and mainly used in the military environment, can be effectively used for civilian security and emergency response missions. This paper also proposes the use of a swarm of intelligent robots as a part of the network-centric architecture to aid the first responders. The swarm of robots works in tandem with the first responders and provides them with the necessary information on a real time basis. The proposed network centric architecture with a …

Investigating The Use Of Wide Area Agmented System (Waas) As A Navigational Tool For Coast Guard And Civilian Maritime Use, Christopher M. Armstrong Jan 2005

Investigating The Use Of Wide Area Agmented System (Waas) As A Navigational Tool For Coast Guard And Civilian Maritime Use, Christopher M. Armstrong

Open Access Master's Theses

Since 2003, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has employed WAAS for precision approaches to airports and navigational use for aircraft -0ver the continental United States, adjacent ocean regions, and parts of Alaska. This was due in part to GPS/DGPS not meeting the FAA's strict guidelines for accuracy, integrity, and availability. Currently, the FAA rates WAAS for 250ft and above the surface of the earth; this 250-foot barrier ensures 100% coverage over the United States from two existing INMARSAT satellites. Because of this height restriction, the Coast Guard has not accepted WAAS as an individual stand-alone source of navigation for military …

Designing Federalism In Burma, David C. Williams, Lian H. Sakhong

Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty

This volume is designed to serve as a concise introduction to certain constitutional ideas that may be relevant to Burma. It contains three documents: one essay by Lian Sakhong, and two lectures that I delivered to the SCSC, over several days in November 2003 and August 2004. All three contain common themes. First, sometimes ideas can show us a way through problems that we had thought were impenetrable. Second, Burma’s problems have grown in part from some misunderstandings of certain ideas. In particular, many in Burma have imagined that governance can really occur only at the center: people look to …

Policy Options To Enhance Technology Diffusion: Modeling The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Potential Of Solid-State Lighting, Amanda Slocum Jan 2005

Policy Options To Enhance Technology Diffusion: Modeling The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Potential Of Solid-State Lighting, Amanda Slocum

Theses

Solid-state lighting (SSL) is an emerging technology that is projected to provide substantial energy savings over conventional lighting sources by 2025. There is a growing concern over the consequences of climate change, largely attributed to anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2; a greenhouse gas) from fossil fuel combustion. Currently fossil-fuel combustion accounts for 70% of electricity produced in the U.S., and end-use lighting applications alone consume approximately one-fifth of this electricity. Therefore, replacing conventional lighting sources with energy-efficient SSL has the potential to significantly reduce electricity consumption which can in turn reduce CO2 emissions. However, previous research has shown there …

The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this analysis is to explore the ways in which the Moroccan ritual of mint tea consumption is symbolic of and informed by the underlying core values of Moroccan culture. In particular, issues of Muslim faith, gender prescriptions, socio-economics and hospitality will be explored in detail as they pertain to the ritual of mint tea consumption. The analysis will show that ultimately "what and how you drink is what you are." Understanding the particular consumptive practices of a culture is key to understanding what is considered to be "right" and "natural" behavior by individuals within that culture.
