Multiple Transatlantic Introductions Of The Western Corn Rootworm, Nicholas Miller, Arnaud Estoup, Stefan Toepfer, Denis Bourguet, Laurent Lapchin, Sylvie Derridj, Kyung Seok Kim, Philippe Reynaud, Lorenzo Furlan, Thomas Guillemaud

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Prevention of biological invasions, as opposed to remedial eradication of invasive species, represents the most cost-effective and perhaps only hope for stemming the current homogenization of the world's biota (1). Here we describe the introduction routes into Europe of the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, WCR), the most destructive pest of corn in the United States. Armed with this knowledge, it will be possible to better gauge the prevention strategies that might be adopted

A Systematic Review Of Existing National Priorities For Child Health Research In Sub-Saharan Africa, George Swingler, James Irlam, William Macharia, Felix Tietche, Martin Meremikwu

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: We systematically reviewed existing national child health research priorities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the processes used to determine them.

Methods: Collaborators from a purposive sample of 20 WHO-AFRO Region countries, assisted by key informants from a range of governmental, non-governmental, research and funding organisations and universities, identified and located potentially eligible prioritisation documents. Included documents were those published between 1990 and 2002 from national or nationally accredited institutions describing national health research priorities for child health, alone or as part of a broader report in which children were a clearly identifiable group. Laboratory, clinical, public health and policy research …

Great Expectations' Defeated?: The Trajectory Of Collective Bargaining Regimes In Canada And The U.S. Post-Nafta, Eric Tucker

All Papers

From the beginning of the free-trade era one contentious area has been the impact of trade liberalization on labor law. Opponents of NAFTA (and some supporters) predicted a regulatory race to the bottom (RTB) would ensue leading to increasingly deregulated labor markets. The result would be weaker collective bargaining laws, lower minimum standards, and a decline in the social wage. In recent years a number of scholars have examined the question in light of more than fifteen years experience under CUFTA and ten under NAFTA and there seems to be a growing consensus that, contrary to those 'great expectations', labor …

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott Jan 2005

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott

All Papers

This paper aims to offer a fresh perspective into what is at stake in the cross-cultural trade dispute over genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) by subjecting a particular discursive sample, the parties’ submissions to the WTO panel, to critical scrutiny. The first step involves a survey of the rhetorical strategies deployed by the parties’ in the presentation of their arguments to the Panel. Next, I embark on the task of ‘disassembling the double helix’. My use of the term ‘double helix’ in this analysis refers to the close coupling of scientific and legal discourses in the trade regime: science and law are …

Rediscovering Williston, Mark L. Movsesian Jan 2005

Rediscovering Williston, Mark L. Movsesian

Faculty Publications

This Article is an intellectual history of classical contracts scholar Samuel Williston. Professor Movsesian argues that the conventional account of Williston's jurisprudence presents an incomplete and distorted picture. While much of Williston's work can strike a contemporary reader as arid and conceptual, there are strong elements of pragmatism as well. Williston insists that doctrine be justified in terms of real-world consequences, maintains that rules can have only presumptive force, and offers institutional explanations for judicial restraint. As a result, his scholarship shares more in common with today's new formalism than commonly supposed. Even the under-theorized quality of Williston's scholarship—to contemporary …

The Challenge Of Motive In The Criminal Law, Elaine M. Chiu Jan 2005

The Challenge Of Motive In The Criminal Law, Elaine M. Chiu

Faculty Publications

The purchase of illegal drugs by an undercover police officer is commonly known as a “buy and bust” operation. In the twenty-first century, the stakes in the longstanding war on drugs are high as law enforcement and national security agencies join forces to confront the disturbing ties between terrorism and illegal narcotics. In addition to being a weapon in the arsenal of law enforcement, the buy and bust operation also tells an interesting story about motive in the criminal law. This article uses the simple street sale to demonstrate how the criminal law suffers from its ambivalent attitude towards the …

In Defense Of The Debt Limit Statute, Anita S. Krishnakumar Jan 2005

In Defense Of The Debt Limit Statute, Anita S. Krishnakumar

Faculty Publications

The debt limit statute is a critical feature of the federal budget process and prompts frequent legislation to increase the government's borrowing authority. In this Article, Professor Anita S. Krishnakumar examines the history of the debt limit statute as well as its function in the fiscal constitution. The Article deconstructs several popular criticisms of the debt limit statute, arguing that the criticisms exaggerate and that the statute in fact serves two important roles: first, the statute is the last remnant of congressional control and accountability over the national debt; second, it acts as an important institutional check on party and …

The Sutherland Report And Dispute Settlement, Mark L. Movsesian Jan 2005

The Sutherland Report And Dispute Settlement, Mark L. Movsesian

Faculty Publications

Ten years after the organization's founding, an air of disappointment surrounds the WTO. The great promise of a global trade regime, dedicated to the principle of comparative advantage, seems to have stalled. The Doha Development Round, launched in 2001 in an attempt to redeem the disastrous Seattle Ministerial Conference of 1999, has been stymied by familiar disputes between North and South, mostly with respect to agricultural issues, but with respect to nonagricultural market access and services as well. Frustrated by impasses at the WTO, members have increasingly bypassed the organization in favor of discrete "preferential trade agreements", or PTAs, that …

Spiritual Custody: Relational Rights And Constitutional Commitments, Jeffrey Shulman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Patricia and David Zummo were married on December 17, 1978. When they divorced ten years later, the Zummos were unable to come to agreement about the religious upbringing of their three children. Prior to their marriage, Patricia and David had agreed that they would raise their children in the Jewish faith, and while they were married, "the Zummo family participated fully in the life of the Jewish faith and community." But after the divorce David wanted to take the children to Roman Catholic services as he saw fit, and he refused to arrange for the children's attendance at Hebrew School …

Does My Identity Speak English? A Pragmatic Approach To The Social World Of An English Language Learner With Language Impairment, Robin L. Danzak, Elaine R. Silliman Jan 2005

Does My Identity Speak English? A Pragmatic Approach To The Social World Of An English Language Learner With Language Impairment, Robin L. Danzak, Elaine R. Silliman

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The case description provides a comprehensive picture of the complex social and linguistic factors that shape the social identity of an English language learner with the additional challenge of language impairment (LI). These issues were explored over 6 months with Fernando, an 8-year-old, Spanish-speaking male with LI in grade 3. A pragmatic, or practical, approach to problem solving was developed for two purposes: first, to obtain a multifaceted understanding of Fernando’s world at school, and second, to arrive at possible educational/clinical solutions that met a standard of cultural appropriateness and practicality. The patterns found that, contrary to teacher interpretations of …

Investigation Of The Optical, Thermal, And Mechanical Properties Of A Bulk Polymer Using The Surface Thermal Lensing Technique, Bushra Hussain Jan 2005

Investigation Of The Optical, Thermal, And Mechanical Properties Of A Bulk Polymer Using The Surface Thermal Lensing Technique, Bushra Hussain

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The sensitive and simple photothermal technique of Surface Thermal Lensing (STL) was employed to study the thermo-mechanical response of an amorphous polycarbonate as a bulk. A discussion is given of how previously developed theories did not fit well with the present work. Therefore, only qualitative analysis and discussion of the experimental results is made, emphasizing the influence of various factors on the STL signal. The work here is mainly a study of the dependence of the STL signal on the modulated pump beam frequency. The effect on the STL signal of thermal and mechanical relaxation in the thermally stimulated area …

The Effect Of Different Imagery Ratios On Learning And Performing A Gymnastic Floor Routine, Adrian Popescu Jan 2005

The Effect Of Different Imagery Ratios On Learning And Performing A Gymnastic Floor Routine, Adrian Popescu

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of different imagery ratios to physical practice needed to learn and perform a gymnastic floor routine. It was assumed that an increase in imagery ability would reflect positively on the floor routine performance. Twenty-seven school-aged, male and female, skilled gymnasts participated in the study. They were randomly separated into four experimental groups: two groups received three imagery sessions per week and two groups received one imagery session per week. The only delimitation was the use of proficiency levels, the imagery ability levels, and gender to ensure the homogeneity of the …

Differentiating Biology Homework To Enhance Academic Achievement, Genevieve Finch Bertsos Jan 2005

Differentiating Biology Homework To Enhance Academic Achievement, Genevieve Finch Bertsos

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to determine if differentiating homework for biology will motivate students to complete and turn in homework, address the needs of diverse learners, and improve academic achievement. The rationale assumes there is a positive relationship between homework completion and academic achievement and that students have different learning styles that can be addressed by allowing choice of homework assignment based on Gardner’s multiple intelligences and Bloom’s taxonomy.

The research employs an experimental design composed of a control group (consisting of two classes) that received the traditional homework, and an experimental group (two classes) that was offered …
