Although attention has been given to the use of UML (Unified Modelling Language) activity diagrams in the generation of scenarios, thin-threads and test-cases, the processes described in the literature rely heavily on manual intervention either in the information extraction process or in the process of transforming them to an alternate structure. This paper introduces an approach that capture, store and output usage scenarios derived automatically from UML activity diagrams.

Educators have long recognised the potential offered by technology as a tool for learning. However, there have been few attempts to provide teachers in the classroom with a framework that assist them to embed technology into curriculum programs in a pedagogically sound manner. This paper details the development and implementation of a module of online curriculum developed for Year Eleven Food Technology (sixteen years of age) students. The module was developed using a framework (CLEO - Curriculum Learning and Education Online) that embeds learning technologies, utilises industry partnerships, has cross curriculum outcomes, scaffolds information literacy skills development and was the …

Heuristics For Optimising The Calculation Of Hypervolume For Multi-Objective Optimisation Problems, Lyndon While, Lucas Bradstreet, Luigi Barone, Philip Hingston
Research outputs pre 2011
The fastest known algorithm for calculating the hypervolume of a set of solutions to a multi-objective optimization problem is the HSO algorithm (hypervolume by slicing objectives). However, the performance of HSO for a given front varies a lot depending on the order in which it processes the objectives in that front. We present and evaluate two alternative heuristics that each attempt to identify a good order for processing the objectives of a given front. We show that both heuristics make a substantial difference to the performance of HSO for randomly-generated and benchmark data in 5-9 objectives, and that they both …
Enumerating Knight's Tours Using An Ant Colony Algorithm, Philip Hingston, Graham Kendall
Enumerating Knight's Tours Using An Ant Colony Algorithm, Philip Hingston, Graham Kendall
Research outputs pre 2011
In this paper, we show how an ant colony optimisation algorithm may be used to enumerate knight's tours for variously sized chessboards. We have used the algorithm to enumerate all tours on 5×5 and 6×6 boards, and, while the number of tours on an 8×8 board is too large for a full enumeration, our experiments suggest that the algorithm is able to uniformly sample tours at a constant, fast rate for as long as is desired.

A Robust Qr Based Detector For V Blast And Its Efficient Hardware Implementation, Fariborz Sobhanmanesh, Saeid Nooshabadi, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs pre 2011
The use of multiple antennas at both transmitting and receiving sides of a communication channel has increased the spectral efficiency to near the Shannon bound. However algorithmic complexity in the realization of the receiver is a major problem for its hardware implementation. In this paper we investigate a near optimal algorithm for V-BLAST detection in MIMO wireless communication systems based on QR factorization, offering remarkable reduction in the hardware complexity. Specifically, we analyze some hardware implementation aspects of the selected algorithm through MATLAB simulations and demonstrate its robustness. This technique can be used in an efficient fixed point VLSI implementation …
Ten More Years Of Educational Technologies In Education: How Far Have We Travelled?, Ron Oliver
Ten More Years Of Educational Technologies In Education: How Far Have We Travelled?, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper describes the advancements that have occurred in the use of educational technologies over the past ten years (1995-2005) and argues that progress has been slow and reminiscent of the slow progress observed in the previous decade (1985-1995). The paper argues that one of the principal reasons for the less than spectacular results stems from the top-down approaches that always seem to drive technology use in education and schools. It argues the need for applications and activities to be driven by bottom-up forces, by the teachers and students themselves and presents the argument that more applied and grounded research …

Mining is an important industry in Australia, contributing billions of dollars to the economy. The performance of a processing plant has a large impact on the profitability of a mining operation, yet plant design decisions are typically guided more by intuition and experience than by analysis. In this paper, we motivate the use of an evolutionary algorithm to aid in the design of such plants. We formalise plant design in terms suitable for application in a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm and create a simulation to assess the performance of candidate solutions. Results show the effectiveness of this approach with our algorithm …
Information Security: A Misnomer, William Hutchinson
Information Security: A Misnomer, William Hutchinson
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper argues that the definition of 'information' is crucial to the understanding of 'information security'. At present, information security concentrates on the technological aspects of data, computer and network security. This computer-centric approach ignores the fact that the majority of information within an organisation is derived from other sources than computer stored data. The implications for security are that much data can be leaked from an organisation even if the computer and network systems are secured.

Common Versus Uncommon Causes Of Dementia, Nicola Lautenschlager, Ralph Martins
Research outputs pre 2011
When patients present with a dementia syndrome at a young age, the experienced clinician will automatically include uncommon dementias in the diagnostic considerations, as familial uncommon dementias due to genetic mutations frequently present as early-onset dementias. This paper highlights why uncommon dementias due to genetic mutations, although marginal in terms of prevalence numbers in the total population, are of significance in the quest to unravel the underlying cause of common dementias such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementias (FTD) and vascular dementia (VaD).

Research outputs pre 2011
The lived experiences of five registered mental health nurses employed in community settings in the southwest region of Western Australia were examined in this study. The study was generated in response to concerns of clinicians working in the area about their scope of practice. Study participants were interviewed concerning their everyday “lived experience.” Interviews were audio taped, transcribed and coded numerically to ensure participant confidentiality. Data was analysed using van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Five essential themes were identified. They were holistic care of clients; isolation, autonomy and advanced practice; professional development and status recognition; educational support; and caseload numbers …
Developing A Framework Of Training For The Older Small Business Owner : Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Julia Turner
Developing A Framework Of Training For The Older Small Business Owner : Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Julia Turner
Research outputs pre 2011
This study was conducted as a result of the critical issue of the ageing population and the implications this will have on the workforce. An employment option for older workers is to become self-employed and to start their own small businesses, rather than to continue working in mainstream employment, which becomes increasing difficult as employees age. The option of self-employment may be a viable option for older people as uncertainty of employment tenure in mainstream employment continues to increases over time and is a way to utilise work skills and competencies that have been acquired over years of work experience. …

Maximising Parent Involvement In The Pedestrian Safety Of 4 To 6 Year Old Children: December 2005, Donna Cross, Margaret Hall, Greg Hamilton
Research outputs pre 2011
In Australia, pedestrian injury is the leading specific cause of death among five to nine year old children (AI Yaman, Bryant & Sargeant 2002). In 1999-00 in Australia, there were 1,144 hospitalisations of children aged 0-14 years for pedestrian injuries, with a hospitalisation rate of 29.1 per 100,000 children. These rates decreased with age and were lowest for children aged 1 0-14 years. Pedestrian injuries among 0-14 year olds in 1999-00 were the second highest cause of hospitalisation in children (AI Yaman, Bryant & Sargeant 2002). While fatalities from pedestrian injuries among children 0-14 years have declined from 3.7 per …
A Capabilities Analysis Of E-Fulfilment Businesses: Transformation In The Logistics Industry, Janice Burn, Paul Alexander
A Capabilities Analysis Of E-Fulfilment Businesses: Transformation In The Logistics Industry, Janice Burn, Paul Alexander
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper reports on the evaluation of practices of 48 leading e-fulfillment suppliers in the UK. Initial findings suggest that while a comprehensive model of e-fulfilment is validated these organisations are also providing services not previously recognised as e-fulfilment capabilities by the literature. This leads to the development of a staged model of transformation, which implies that the industry will embrace radical change in some sectors and lead to a new definition of e-fulfillment businesses. More in depth investigation leads to a proposed definition, and a methodology to measure the degree of transformation.

The Impact Of Digital Persona On The Future Of Learning: A Case Study On Digital Repositories And The Sharing Of Information About Children At Risk In Western Australia, Mark Balnaves, Joseph Luca
Research outputs pre 2011
Modern databases and digital depositories have the capacity to store vast amounts of information on individuals. In the case of normal everyday affairs, of course, there may be many databases and many organizations involved in collecting information on individuals. There are two types of digital persona possible in these environments active persona and passive persona (Clarke, 2001). In this paper the authors will report on initial results from an exploratory study on attitudes towards information sharing in Western Australian education and explore the role of active and passive digital persona in information sharing. Many organizations collect information on students, ranging …
Using Process Modelling To Capture Requirements For A Digital Library, Michael Johnstone
Using Process Modelling To Capture Requirements For A Digital Library, Michael Johnstone
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper describes the results of an action research study which explored how IT professionals used process modelling to capture requirements and design artefacts concerning a digital library system. The intention was to produce a web-based, non-relational (XML) database system to store publications of various types and to allow public domain access to the system. Traditionally, such systems are constructed with a data-oriented design, with little attention being paid to process concerns. In this study, process, described by business rules, was defined first which provides advantages as many business systems (including library systems) are often process-oriented. The team involved in …
An Ant Colony Optimization Approach To Test Sequence Generation For State-Based Software Testing, Huaizhong Li, Chiou Peng Lam
An Ant Colony Optimization Approach To Test Sequence Generation For State-Based Software Testing, Huaizhong Li, Chiou Peng Lam
Research outputs pre 2011
Properly generated test suites may not only locate the defects in software systems, but also help in reducing the high cost associated with software testing, ft is often desired that test sequences in a test suite can be automatically generated to achieve required test coverage. However, automatic test sequence generation remains a major problem in software testing. This paper proposes an ant colony optimization approach to automatic test sequence generation for state-based software testing. The proposed approach can directly use UML artifacts to automatically generate test sequences to achieve required test coverage.

Using Adaptive Agents To Automatically Generate Test Scenarios From The Uml Activity Diagrams, Dong Xu, Huaizhong Li, Chiou Peng Lam
Research outputs pre 2011
Test case generation is one of the most important issues in software testing research and industrial practice. Test scenarios are frequently used to derive test cases for scenario-based software testing. However, the generation of the test scenarios is usually a manual and labor-intensive task. It is desired that test scenarios can be automatically generated. In this paper, we propose an automated approach using adaptive agents to directly generate test scenarios from the UML activity diagrams.
Seeking Information Superiority: Strategies For Business In The Commercial Application Of Information Operations, Martin Dart
Seeking Information Superiority: Strategies For Business In The Commercial Application Of Information Operations, Martin Dart

The Addiction Severity Index As A Predictor Of Outcome For Inpatients With A Dual-Diagnosis., Larry Spencer Glenn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Addiction Severity Index is the most widely used intake instrument for substance abuse treatment. The National Comorbidity Study (Kessler et al. 1994) indicated that 13.7% of the United States population suffers from a concurrent substance use and mental health disorder within a lifetime. This study explored the utility of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and demographic factors as predictors of treatment as rated by staff at discharge. The records of 146 individuals with substance use and mental health diagnoses admitted to a freestanding residential treatment center in Northwestern Pennsylvania were examined to access the predictive properties of the ASI …
Personalizing Leadership: Institutional And Individual Factors Affecting The Leadership Styles And Policy Choices Of Wisconsin Police Chiefs., Dale P. Kapla
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines variables that influence the leadership styles of Wisconsin police chiefs and how those variables affect organizational decision-making, type and extent of community policing policies, and choice of in-service training. Principal-agent theory is used to model these influences, providing further application of agency theory to local bureaucracies. Traditional principal-agent models posit that government agencies and their top-level executives are affected by external and internal factors; however, there is little known about individual factors affecting leadership style and policy decisions. This study includes individual factors as a dynamic affecting leadership style, decision-making, and policy choices of local police chiefs. …
A Study Of The Effect Of An Integrated Continuum Of Intensive Crisis Intervention Services (Icicis), Including Assertive Community Treatment (Act), On Civil Commitments In North Central West Virginia., Robert D. Williams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The mental health service delivery system in West Virginia is ineffective at resolving psychiatric emergencies, as evidenced by a high civil commitment rate, leading to an annual {dollar}4 million non-budgeted expense to the state. West Virginia's two State hospitals are regularly at capacity, causing civil committed patients to be diverted to community psychiatric units, often at the state's expense. At one of the state's 13 Comprehensive Community Mental Health Centers (CCMHC), United Summit Center, two evidence based treatment modalities, ICICIS and ACT, are examined for their effectiveness at lowering the civil commitment rate per 100,000 and civil commitment hospitalization days. …

In the first experiment, teeth were exposed to a demineralization solution (pH=4.46) for 48 hours and in the second experiment, teeth were exposed to the demineralization solution for 72 hours. Lesion depth, lesion area, and lesion fluorescence were measured using …
Social Anxiety In College Students: The Interaction Of Parental Control And Proximity., Jennifer A. Chrystan
Social Anxiety In College Students: The Interaction Of Parental Control And Proximity., Jennifer A. Chrystan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between parental control and parental proximity as they influence social anxiety in young adults. Previous research has consistently demonstrated the positive relationship between parental control and social anxiety. However, studies that have examined the desirability of continued parental attachment (proximity) have resulted in a contradictory body of literature. It was hypothesized that two interaction terms, mother protection by mother proximity and father protection by father proximity, would significantly predict participants’ self-reported level of social anxiety after controlling for mother and father parenting variables. Specifically, it was hypothesized that among …
A Regional Scale Steady-State Groundwater Flow Model Of A Steeply-Dipping Karst Aquifer, Shenandoah Valley Of West Virginia-Virginia., Jason S. Early
A Regional Scale Steady-State Groundwater Flow Model Of A Steeply-Dipping Karst Aquifer, Shenandoah Valley Of West Virginia-Virginia., Jason S. Early
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A regional equivalent porous medium (EPM) model was developed using available hydrogeologic data for the steeply-dipping karst aquifer of the Northern Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia and Virginia. The model employed uniform recharge and variable hydraulic conductivity (K) distributed at the formation level based on published field-test estimates. Three independent procedures were used for calibration, with the most acceptable approach using calibration to heads at wells and specified fluxes for springs. Although this procedure produced a reasonable regional head distribution and acceptable calibration statistics (mean error = 0.58 m, mean absolute error = 8.61 m), the use of specified fluxes …
A Comparison Of Forest Soils Exhibiting Various Degrees Of Nitrogen Availability: Do Tree Species Matter And Which Nutrients Are Limiting In Nitrogen Rich Environments?, Stephen E. Gress
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Regions downwind of industrial and agricultural pollution receive high amounts of nitrogen (N) deposition. Some forested regions now exhibit symptoms on N saturation, which is N availability in excess of biotic demand. This phenomena and the evidence that trees alter soil in ways that may influence N saturation is the basis of my research. My thesis consists of three parts: (1) Testing the association between tree species and soil properties: Can larger-scale patterns be found under individual trees?; (2) Phosphomonesterase activity in violets (Viola rotundifolia) found in watersheds exhibiting varying levels of nitrogen availability: What lies beyond nitrogen saturation?; and …
