Abnormalities In The Ozark Hellbender, (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Bishopi) In Arkansas: A Comparison Between Two Rivers With A Historical Perspective, Waylon R. Hiler, Benjamin A. Wheeler, Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We documented abnormalities of Ozark hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) populations in the Eleven Point River (Randolph County, Arkansas) and the Spring River (Fulton County, Arkansas) as part of ongoing monitoring efforts in this species. We found abnormalities in 90% (9 of 10) and 40% (36 of 97) of hellbenders in the Spring River and Eleven Point River, respectively, during the 2003-2004 field seasons. Most abnormalities found in Eleven Point hellbenders were generally less invasive and seemed to be more intrinsic to the species' natural history (i.e., vicissitudes of living), whereas those found in Spring River hellbenders were gross morphological aberrations. …

Mapping Of Ssdna Nicks Within Dsdna Genomes By Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis, Wayne P. Wahls, K. Mark Dewall, Mari K. Davidson Jan 2005

Mapping Of Ssdna Nicks Within Dsdna Genomes By Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis, Wayne P. Wahls, K. Mark Dewall, Mari K. Davidson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

DNA molecules within chromosomes undergo constant, dynamic changes yet maintain the integrity of the primary DNA sequence. DNA replication, adjustment of helical density, resolution of catenenes, repair of DNA damage, and homologous recombination each involve breakage and religation of the phosphate backbone of the double helix. Although the analysis of dsDNA breaks is facile, the analysis of ssDNA nicks is not. The principal impediment is that conventional, one-dimensional electrophoresis methods cannot readily detect ssDNA nicks in the context of dsDNA breaks. We therefore developed a two dimensional (native/denaturing) gel electrophoresis approach to map the positions of ssDNA nicks. Analysis of …

Misuse Of Myth: Conscious Adherence Or Authoritative Control Mechanism, Henry H. Averhart Jr. Jan 2005

Misuse Of Myth: Conscious Adherence Or Authoritative Control Mechanism, Henry H. Averhart Jr.

McNair Scholars Journal

Myths are significant in explaining the existential questions of life, but when they are adopted uncritically, they may generate more harm than good. Admittedly, there is no way out of myth; we are the mythical creature. We need, therefore, to become more aware of myth and more critical of the myths we already, if only unknowingly, have adopted. This research addresses common misconceptions of the definitions of myths, attempts to identify the conscious and unconscious use of myths in our daily lives, and ultimately introduces the concept of modified myth adoption. This is done by analyzing and synthesizing selected scholarly …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Ethnicity: A Literature Review, Shanel M. Bryant Jan 2005

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Ethnicity: A Literature Review, Shanel M. Bryant

McNair Scholars Journal

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most expensive mental disorders, costing U.S. citizens $77 billion every year (Reinberg, 2004). Although ADHD effects between 3-7% of U.S. children (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000), there are many misconceptions about the disorder and concerns have been raised regarding appropriate diagnosis and treatment in children, adolescents, and adults. In addition to these concerns, several authors have noted that there is a lack of research regarding ethnicity and ADHD. The limited research that has been done is confusing with some studies indicating that there is no difference in rates of ADHD diagnoses …

Adrift On A Sea Of Troubles: Cross-Border Art Loans And The Specter Of Ulterior Title, Norman Palmer

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The purpose of this Article is to show how modern law responds to such challenge. In particular, it examines the means by which common law systems manage the return of unlawfully removed cultural objects to dispossessed parties, and the implications of those means for international loan agreements. Regard is paid to the remedies that may be available in the aftermath of a claim, and the "self-help" devices that are available to lenders and borrowers. Some of the measures examined are peculiar to cultural objects, but others are general. Some have no direct relation to law, but work on voluntary regulation. …

A Free-Market Environmentalist Approach To Genetically Engineered Foods, Christie Laporte, Walter Block Jan 2005

A Free-Market Environmentalist Approach To Genetically Engineered Foods, Christie Laporte, Walter Block

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Although great numbers of the world's population still suffer from starvation, the possibility for genetically engineered foods to alleviate the problem creates great controversy. The authors address common concerns raised by anti-market opponents of the genetically engineered food industry and offer free-market approaches to the apparent dilemma. While such opponents always promote government intervention to alleviate the possible negative outcomes to the genetically engineered food solution, the authors illustrate the market's aptitude and methods by which it could prevail over the still existing starvation problem in the absence of any government intervention.;The paper also reinforces that the market is a …

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson Jan 2005

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Religious experience in contemporary theological epistemology is a theme broad enough to allow for many approaches. This essay grants the concept of 'religious experience' tentative validity, subject to later qualification. The actual experience explored will be a 'green' experience of non-human nature that many Christians have in common with many non-Christians. The first section describes it in a general way, while the second probes its character as a possible 'religious experience'. Then, a third section begins to explore its theological significance. A conclusion emphasizes the essential, dynamic partnership between theological method and non-methodical elements, such as religious experiences in general …

Evaluating Awareness Of Community Health And Human Services By The Hispanic Population In Lexington, Kentucky, Pilar Corbellini

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Over the past 10 years, Hispanics, predominately Mexicans, have become a notable component of immigration in Kentucky. At the same time, the city of Lexington has striven to increase and stimulate community efforts to help and support people in need. Over 2000 non-profit organizations exist in the city and surrounding areas that unite community support to assist people seeking help.

Among non-profit agencies, particularly the United Way of the Bluegrass, there is a perceived idea that people in need and seeking help are overwhelmed with information about available community human and health services. Notwithstanding this perception, a different reality seems …

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) established, in section 507, the Small Business Stationary Source Technical and Environmental Compliance Assistance Program (SBTCP). SBTCPs under the CAAA are designed to provide small stationary air pollution sources with technical and compliance assistance, develop tools and disseminate information, communicate requirements under the Act, and assist small businesses with pollution prevention.

In Kentucky, the compliance and technical assistance program is known as the Kentucky Business Environmental Assistance Program (KBEAP). Since the program’s inception, measures of performance have primarily focused on outputs. With the establishment of Goal 5 of the 2003-2008 Environmental Protection Agency …
