Neurocops: The Politics Of Prohibition And The Future Of Enforcing Social Policy From Inside The Body , Richard Glen Boire Jan 2005

Neurocops: The Politics Of Prohibition And The Future Of Enforcing Social Policy From Inside The Body , Richard Glen Boire

Journal of Law and Health

Over the next decade an increasing number of new "pharmacotherapy" medications will become available with the potential to tremendously impact the use and abuse of illegal drugs and the overall direction of national and international drug policy. These pharmacotherapy medications are designed to block or significantly reduce the "highs" elicited by illegal drugs. Used as part of a drug treatment program, pharmacotherapy medications may provide valuable assistance for people voluntarily seeking a chemical aid in limiting or eliminating the problem drug use. However, the tremendously politicized nature of the "drug war" raises substantial concerns that, in addition to those who …

Pregnant Women Inmates: Evaluating Their Rights And Identifying Opportunities For Improvements In Their Treatment, Kelly Parker Jan 2005

Pregnant Women Inmates: Evaluating Their Rights And Identifying Opportunities For Improvements In Their Treatment, Kelly Parker

Journal of Law and Health

Pregnant women incarcerated at the time of our nation's founding faced the prospect of giving birth in their cells alone and a considerable likelihood that their infants would die. This is somewhat unsurprising. At this time infant mortality rates were high. Given the pace of advances in the treatment of pregnant women since that time, one might expect that the experience of pregnant women incarcerated in today's correctional facilities would have improved as it has for their peers on the outside. That, however, would be an unrealistic assumption. In addition to facing decidedly substandard environments in some facilities - inappropriate …

One And Done: How Ohio's One-Year, Nonrenewable Visiting Medical Faculty Certificate Is Harming The State's Economic Recovery, Austin Mcguan Jan 2005

One And Done: How Ohio's One-Year, Nonrenewable Visiting Medical Faculty Certificate Is Harming The State's Economic Recovery, Austin Mcguan

Journal of Law and Health

As this hypothetical illustrates, the one-year, nonrenewable Visiting Faculty Certificate harms Ohio. Not only does it drive highly-qualified doctors from the state, but it also discourages them from coming to Ohio. In recent years, Ohio has lost thousands of jobs as major corporations and government entities have left the state, but it also discourages them from coming to Ohio. In recent years, Ohio has lost thousands of jobs as major corporations and government entities have left the state. Meanwhile, Ohio has been trying to correct this trend by taking advantage of its universities, world-class hospitals, and research centers and moving …

The Current State Of Advance Directive Law In Ohio: More Protective Of Provider Liability Than Patients Rights, Marie Ortman Jan 2005

The Current State Of Advance Directive Law In Ohio: More Protective Of Provider Liability Than Patients Rights, Marie Ortman

Journal of Law and Health

Ohio has adopted the Modified Uniform Rights of the Terminally Ill Act which governs the use and execution of written advance directives as expressions of a patient's desire to consent to or refuse future medical treatment. However, the Act also includes a provision that grants both civil and criminal immunity to health care providers who do not comply with a person's written advance directive. Unfortunately, because of the grant of civil and criminal immunity encompassed within the adopted written advance directive statutes, Ohio law today does not afford any greater protection of a patient's right to refuse medical treatment at …

A More Porous Postmodernity: Absurdity, Politics, Consumerism And The Cultural Authority Of Spongebob Squarepants, Annie Gaus Jan 2005

A More Porous Postmodernity: Absurdity, Politics, Consumerism And The Cultural Authority Of Spongebob Squarepants, Annie Gaus

Honors Papers

In the wake of the recent election, there's been some talk of healing, but until today no single figure has emerged with the capacity to repair the deep fissures in the body politic. We are so hung up on blue states and red states that our only hope may lie in the primary color that has been left off the map. We need something-or someone-yellow, and also absorbent and porous enough to soak up the ill will and scrub away the lingering bad feelings...Now more than ever, the country needs Spongebob Squarepants."

In his New York Times film review of …

Reading And Teaching Third World Women's Literature In The First World: Colonialism And Feminism In Crick Crack, Monkey And Nervous Conditions, Elvie Miller Jan 2005

Reading And Teaching Third World Women's Literature In The First World: Colonialism And Feminism In Crick Crack, Monkey And Nervous Conditions, Elvie Miller

Honors Papers

In this essay, I examine two novels by Third World women writers, with a view to exploring how to read and teach Third World texts in a First World context. Teaching these (and other Third World texts), I contend, must entail negotiating their status as "other" to First-World, Western texts and must include recognizing this status as imposed by the First World readership and as a heuristic to develop an understanding and a pedagogy that is able critically to examine the First World or West's naturalizations of its own pedagogical and knowledge-based claims. To do this, I focus specifically on …

Post Merger Performances In Japan, Mami Suzuki Jan 2005

Post Merger Performances In Japan, Mami Suzuki

Honors Papers

Mergers and acquisitions are relatively new phenomena in the Japanese market. The total number M & A transactions per year has increased from approximately 500 to 1,752 between 1995 and 2002. MergerStat records 3,510 and 7,411 transactions in the U.S. for the equivalent years. The percentage of M & A transactions per number of business entities was 0.03% for Japan in 2001 and 0.1% for the U.S. in 2002. As illustrated through the figures, the frequency of M&A in Japan is considerably lower relative to the U.S., but proliferation of transactions is evident as well. Post-merger performances of firms in …

Estimation Of Subject Specific Icp Dynamic Models Using Prospective Clinical Data, Wayne W. Wakeland, Joe Fusion, B. Goldstein Jan 2005

Estimation Of Subject Specific Icp Dynamic Models Using Prospective Clinical Data, Wayne W. Wakeland, Joe Fusion, B. Goldstein

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We used a prospective clinical trial to generate physiologic data to create subject-specific in silico (computer simulation) models of intracranial pressure dynamics in children with severe traumatic brain injury. The trial included a physiologic challenge protocol with changes in head-of-bed elevation and minute ventilation, applied over multiple iterations to three subjects. Physiologic signals (electrocardiogram, respiration, arterial blood pressure, intracranial pressure [ICP], oxygen saturation) were recorded continuously, along with clinical annotations indicating the precise timing of physiologic challenges. Several parameters within the model of ICP dynamics were estimated for each subject based on the ICP response to the challenges. Estimation was …

A Comparison Of Decontextualized And Contextualized Reading Skills In Persons With Severe Aphasia, Carey Smith Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Decontextualized And Contextualized Reading Skills In Persons With Severe Aphasia, Carey Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A repeated measures comparative design compared the reading comprehension accuracy scores of three participants across two conditions: Condition A -- Decontextualized Stimulus Reading Task (DSRT), resembling traditional reading therapy, and Condition B -- Contextual Choice Reading Conversation (CCRC) with a communication partner. In the DSRT condition, participants read a sentence-length question prior to selecting one of 3-to-5 printed responses with no supports. In CCRC, partners presented graphic sentence stimuli representing conversational questions and response choices with the following supports: simultaneous auditory input, supplemental drawings or gestures, natural repetitions, consistent topic, and conversational order. Experimental conditions were administered in counterbalanced order …

Healing Violence In South Africa: A Textual Reading Of Kentridge's 'Drawings For Projection', Vanessa Thompson Jan 2005

Healing Violence In South Africa: A Textual Reading Of Kentridge's 'Drawings For Projection', Vanessa Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the literature appears to understand trauma and violence as experienced singularly, and as effecting intrapsychic changes or reactions, latterly there has been a recognition that this understanding of the term 'trauma' may not be adequate to describe violence suffered over a prolonged period of time. Further, psychology tends to avert our attention from healing by attending to symptomatology. In South Africa, during the apartheid years (1948-1994), violence was constituted by an extraordinary threat to ongoing being and was informed by a totalitarian prejudice. Creative texts, unlike traumatic texts, show how many artists have worked with South African traumas in …
