"We Are No Preacher" [Electronic Resource] : Margaret Oliphant's Textual Authority, Shannon Landry Brown
"We Are No Preacher" [Electronic Resource] : Margaret Oliphant's Textual Authority, Shannon Landry Brown
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I examine four of Margaret Oliphant's novels, her supernatural fiction, and her literary reviews, revealing how she relies on her knowledge of the cultural sign system, domesticity, and women's value to show how women may successfully navigate middle-class Victorian society. She accomplishes this by identifying the places where women's strengths lie: the boundaries between work and family, between the spiritual and material, amid the everyday details that she herself realizes reveal the workings of society. She sets herself up as a voice of authority within the system itself, not as a distant, all-knowing sage but as someone …
Three Essays In Labor And Health Economics, Christopher K. Coombs
Three Essays In Labor And Health Economics, Christopher K. Coombs
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This Dissertation is primarily focused on the study of U.S. workforce trends. Research over the past fifty years, with respect to the choices that individuals make in terms of maximizing their own well-being, has covered several areas. Additionally, the legal climate has changed dramatically over this time period and research in this area has covered the possible effects on economic outcomes, including an individual's well-being. The first essay focuses on the trend in trade union membership in the U.S. over the last few decades. We revisit what is known as the government substitution hypothesis which basically addresses the question of …
Health And Growth, Petia Stoianova Stoytcheva
Health And Growth, Petia Stoianova Stoytcheva
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Inarguably the most important question is about the unequal distribution of income among countries. Development economists have recently turned to health for an answer. This dissertation investigates the e®ect of health on cross-country income. The first essay sheds new light on the impact of AIDS on cross-country income levels. We control for a variety of factors that are potentially related to income as suggested by our empirical model and existing related literature. Using the extended (for human capital) Solow model as our baseline empirical specification, we consider cross-sectional and panel estimation. For the full sample it is shown that AIDS …

Leona Queyrouze (1861-1938): Louisiana French Creole Poet, Essayist, And Composer, Donna M. Meletio
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This new historicist study chronicles the life and work of a Louisiana French Creole, Leona Queyrouze (1861-1938) who grew up in the turbulent era following the Civil War. Her articles and poetry, mostly written in French, were published in the local periodicals, L’Abeille, Comptes-Rendus, the Picayune and the Crusader under the pseudonyms, Constant Beauvais, Salamandra, and Adamas. She also translated plays from French into English in New York under at the request of Harpers Bazar and wrote two symphonies that were performed at the World Exposition in New Orleans in 1884. Through an ever-widening critical lens, I focus upon her …
Cementitious Permeable Pavement As A Passive Unit Operation And Process For Stormwater Quality And Quantity Control, Xuheng Kuang
Cementitious Permeable Pavement As A Passive Unit Operation And Process For Stormwater Quality And Quantity Control, Xuheng Kuang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With respect to the problems caused by impervious pavements, cementitous permeable pavement (CPP) functions as a passive unit operation and process for stormwater quality and quantity control through infiltration, evaporation, filtration, absorption and reaction mechanisms. CPP pore characteristics were examined through pore connectivity analysis using X-Ray Tomography (XRT). Image resolution influence on image analysis results was evaluated. Relationships between parameters of pore characteristics were evaluated. Factors that significantly influence fluid flow in CPP media include effective porosity, pore connectivity and pore size distribution. A modified Kozeny-Carman model in which effective porosity, specific surface area based on effective pores (SSA)pe, and …
Effects Of A Primary Care Weight Management Intervention On Physical Activity In Low-Income African American Women, Gareth R. Dutton
Effects Of A Primary Care Weight Management Intervention On Physical Activity In Low-Income African American Women, Gareth R. Dutton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although physical inactivity is associated with numerous medical conditions, most individuals do not engage in recommended levels of physical activity. Certain subgroups of the population are particularly inactive, including women, African Americans, and individuals with lower income and less education. While research suggests that interventions targeting physical activity can produce significant improvements in activity and cardiorespiratory fitness, there is less research examining physical activity interventions for these at-risk groups. In particular, there is a lack of research examining primary care physical activity interventions among low-income, African American women. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of …
Ecology And Conservation Of Louisiana Black Bears In The Tensas River Basin And Reintroduced Populations, John Farnum Benson
Ecology And Conservation Of Louisiana Black Bears In The Tensas River Basin And Reintroduced Populations, John Farnum Benson
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus luteolus) exist in 3 isolated populations in Louisiana and are listed as a threatened subspecies under the United States endangered species act. In order to establish a population of black bears in central Louisiana and to promote connectivity among existing populations 11 adult females and 28 cubs were reintroduced to suitable habitat on Lake Ophelia National Wildlife Refuge. We captured and monitored females in the Tensas River Basin (TRB) in northeast Louisiana for use in these reintroduction efforts and to study their ecology. Specifically, I studied the food habits, space use, habitat selection, and denning …

This research effort was intended to identify the non-medical job skills projected to be needed by in-home paraprofessional caregivers of today and beyond as indicated by a Delphi panel of caregiving experts from public and private business areas as well as academia. Thirty Delphi participants were selected based on a qualifying questionnaire. Actual respondents, however, numbered 29 for Round 1, 24 for Round 2 and 23 for Round 3. Each round asked participants to respond to a survey as prompted by an open ended statement. Within the Round 1 process, participants indicated which non-medical skills from the prepared list they …
Aquinas And The Knowledge Of God, Casey Edler
Aquinas And The Knowledge Of God, Casey Edler
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis concerns the introduction of mystical knowledge into a debate about God that relies on scientific evidence. The thesis focuses in particular on the relevance of Thomas Aquinas' view of mystical experience. After first presenting Aquinas' theory of rapture as an anticipation of the beatific vision and distinguishing it from other ways of knowing God, I argue that such a theory convincingly renders mystical knowledge inadmissible into a debate about God that relies on scientific evidence, owing to one's inability to either remember or communicate such an experience. As a result, introducing mystical knowledge into the debate causes the …
African-American Women's Reception Influence And Utility Of Television Content: An Exploratory Qualitative Analysis, Bettye A. Grable
African-American Women's Reception Influence And Utility Of Television Content: An Exploratory Qualitative Analysis, Bettye A. Grable
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative study featured 33 in-depth interviews of college-aged, African-American women and offers baseline exploratory data about how a majority cultural artifact like televised depictions become utilized in the everyday lives of an underrepresented group in media studies. This research represents one of a few studies to explore how black females decode and utilize TV content, and offers a new theoretical framework to explain informants' decoded receptions, influence and utility of television. An inductive analysis of interview narratives found that viewers use TV content like a looking-glass to understand how they are seen by others and where they fit in …
Finite Element Modeling Approach And Performance Evaluation Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Sandwich Bridge Panels, Stanley Onyema Oghumu
Finite Element Modeling Approach And Performance Evaluation Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Sandwich Bridge Panels, Stanley Onyema Oghumu
LSU Master's Theses
In the USA alone, about 27% of the bridges are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Bridge owners are continually investigating methods to effectively retrofit existing bridges, or to economically replace them with new ones. Modern composite materials for structural applications, at one time only in the domain of aerospace engineering, are increasingly making their way into civil engineering applications. In addition to retrofitting current concrete and steel structures using FRP sheets or plates, a great deal of work is being conducted to develop versatile, fully-composite structural bridge systems. To reduce the self-weight and also achieve the necessary stiffness, …
Monasticism In Anglo-Saxon England: An Analysis Of Selected Hagiography From Northumbria Written In The Years After The Council Of Whitby, Carrie Couvillon
Monasticism In Anglo-Saxon England: An Analysis Of Selected Hagiography From Northumbria Written In The Years After The Council Of Whitby, Carrie Couvillon
LSU Master's Theses
Hagiography, writings about saints, was generally a means of venerating a saint's life. An author of hagiography wrote to advance his own salvation as well as to educate his audience on the proper practice of Christianity. Anglo-Saxon hagiography written in the years after the Council of Whitby in 664, however, also showed more support for the Roman tradition as opposed to Celtic Christianity. In an era when Christians in England were divided both culturally and religiously, unification under a single tradition as the one true representative of the faith was essential. This paper is an analysis of four important hagiographical …
Relating Suspended Solids And Phosphorus In Surface Water Runoff From Agricultural Soils To Soil Salinity Measurements, Theophilus Kene Udeigwe
Relating Suspended Solids And Phosphorus In Surface Water Runoff From Agricultural Soils To Soil Salinity Measurements, Theophilus Kene Udeigwe
LSU Master's Theses
Runoff of sediments and nutrients, particularly phosphorus (P) from agricultural fields is considered as one of the main causes of water quality impairment. Very little research has been done on relating suspended solids in runoff to soil test information. This two-part study was aimed at:1) evaluating the relationship between total suspended solids (TSS), P forms in runoff, and soil salinity measurements, particularly electrical conductivity (EC), and 2) establishing the relationships between runoff P forms and the various soil test P measures, across a variety of selected Louisiana calcareous and acid soils. In the first part of the study, five Louisiana …
Adoption In New Orleans: What Agencies Are Doing To Promote It, Emily Barbara Rivers
Adoption In New Orleans: What Agencies Are Doing To Promote It, Emily Barbara Rivers
LSU Master's Theses
Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies are a national concern in the United States. In addition, many people exist who would like to become parents, but cannot or do not reproduce biologically. While adoption could offer a solution to this problem, the actual number of adoptions that take place is very small. This study examined what adoption agencies in the New Orleans area are doing to promote themselves to women with unwanted pregnancies. In-depth interviews were conducted with five adoption agencies. Three of the five agencies reported using various methods of targeting women with unwanted pregnancies. These methods included public posters, flyers …
The Everywhere Chronicles, Jamie Brownell Baldridge
The Everywhere Chronicles, Jamie Brownell Baldridge
LSU Master's Theses
The Everywhere Chronicles is a body of work that has been perambulating through my mind since the halcyon days of childhood. It is not intended as any sort of catharsis, metaphorical or otherwise, nor is it any forum of self discovery, accidental or intentional. These Chronicles are quite simply a journey into imagination, an exercise in "what ifs?". They confront the theory that Columbus was actually on a munchies run to an Indian Takeaway in Ipswich and simply took a wrong turn at the Antilles, and that the Lost City of Atlantis is alive and well somewhere outside of Duluth …
Using Brownfield Redevelopment To Mitigate Technological Hazards In Shreveport, Louisiana, David Farritor
Using Brownfield Redevelopment To Mitigate Technological Hazards In Shreveport, Louisiana, David Farritor
LSU Master's Theses
Brownfields are "abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination" (USEPA 2003a). This thesis focuses on the practices of public and private institutions to redevelop brownfields in Shreveport, Louisiana, as a means of mitigating potential technological hazards. The theoretical concept framing this analysis is hazards-of-place, a model of vulnerability that proposes interactions among physical vulnerability, social vulnerability, and mitigation efforts. In this model, vulnerability is a process that involves not only the likelihood of a hazardous incident but also the processes of hazard creation and mitigation that occur …
In Vitro And In Vivo Anti-Angiogenic Activities Of Milk Sphingolipids, Rishipal Rastrapal Bansode
In Vitro And In Vivo Anti-Angiogenic Activities Of Milk Sphingolipids, Rishipal Rastrapal Bansode
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Anti-angiogenic therapies aimed at halting new blood vessel formation are now being extensively studied as inhibitors of excessive angiogenesis. Conversely, compounds with ability to stimulate angiogenesis are being considered as a therapeutic approach for insufficient angiogenesis. Food-borne bioactive compounds such as genistein, resveratrol, curcumin, the Bowman-Birk inhibitor, and catechins are being potentially established as good candidates for angioprevention. The aim of our study was to determine the anti-or pro-angiogenic activity of milk-based glycosphingolipids such as C6-ceramide (Cer), Sphingomyelin (SPM) and Glucosylceramide (GluCer), in vitro, using breast cancer (MCF-7), colon cancer (Caco-2) and prostate cancer (DU-145) cell-lines, on angiogenic factors such …
The Chemistry Of My Affections, David Scott Smith
The Chemistry Of My Affections, David Scott Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Although I have always been interested in the origins of my thought processes and the methods and compulsions that motivate my work, in past work I have avoided self portraiture, or blatant explorations into my own sense of self. With my thesis project I wanted to conduct an express exploration into the psychology of my motivations. My initial goal was to create an environment, a sense of place, where both the viewer and myself are drawn into the work, and confronted with a unique experience of personal expression. The focal point is a bath enclosed within a grotto, which symbolizes …
Sediment Tmdl Calculations For Amite River, Pradeep Kumar Mishra
Sediment Tmdl Calculations For Amite River, Pradeep Kumar Mishra
LSU Master's Theses
The Amite River is recognized as one of the 15 water bodies impaired by sediments in Louisiana. A sediment TMDL calculation for the Amite River is required by the EPA. Based on EPA’s Protocol sediment TMDL calculations for the Upper Amite River are conducted in this thesis. The sediment TMDL calculations are composed of four parts: (1) Development of a new sediment transport and dispersion model for the Amite River, (2) Estimation of sediment loads (sources) produced by watershed erosion, (3) Flow computation, and (4) Determination of sediment TMDL for the Amite River. Using the mass conservation principle and Reynolds …

Barriers To Educational Attainment For Rural Women Exiting Welfare, Lynda W. Carville
LSU Master's Theses
In this paper I look at 12 women who were on welfare and their barriers to becoming self sufficient through education. They are in rural areas in the state of Louisiana and relied on welfare as a support system. I will examine their abilities to eventually obtain education and stable employment. In this paper, I use the qualitative data provided by Dr. Pam Monroe of Louisiana State University to examine the relationships of schooling, skills and recent work experience to the women’s paths to becoming self-sufficient. This study provides information on the extent to which education leads to job stability …
Competitive Dynamics In Electronic Networks - Achieving Competitiveness Through Interorganizational Systems, Lei Chi
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Many dramatic and potentially powerful uses of information technology involveinterorganizational systems (IOS). These systems, defined as distributed computing systems thatsupport shared processes between firms, have become fundamental to business operations, spanning multiple activities in value/supply chains. They have opened avenues to unprecedentedcollaborative linkages between firms. As IOS-mediated relational networks are rapidly evolving, roles of IOS have progressively changed beyond those of efficiency and power functions. To fully appreciate modern roles of IOS in e-business, this dissertation addresses two keyresearch questions: (1) How do firms achieve competitiveness through IOS? (2) How do IOSinfluence competitive behaviors of the competing firms in intertwined electronic networks? Itdoes …
The Invisible Side Of Military Careers : An Examination Of Employment And Well-Being Among Military Spouses, Beth Allen Easterling
The Invisible Side Of Military Careers : An Examination Of Employment And Well-Being Among Military Spouses, Beth Allen Easterling
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The link between employment and well-being is well-documented. However, limited research is available examining how employment affects the well-being of military spouses. Using data from the 2003 Air Force Community Assessment Survey, this study examines the impact of employment characteristics on depression levels, satisfaction with emotional well-being, and life satisfaction for military spouses. Results indicate that being unemployed and looking for employment outside of the home is detrimental to well-being for this group. Other personal, familial, and military factors are also discussed in relationship to employment and well-being of military spouses. Practical implications and suggestions for further research are discussed.
Some Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Perceived Norms, And Sex-Role Stereotypes On Romantic Betrayals, Alissa Anne Garth
Some Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Perceived Norms, And Sex-Role Stereotypes On Romantic Betrayals, Alissa Anne Garth
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It was hypothesized that high self-monitors (compared to low self-monitors) would report more betrayals of their romantic partners. Perceptions of others' betrayals should follow sex-role stereotypes (i.e., males are more likely to betray than females). Sex-role stereotyping might be attenuated when counter-stereotypical norms are made salient. One-hundred seventy five undergraduates completed the Interpersonal Behavior Survey (Roscoe et aI., 1988) and the Self-Monitoring Scale (Snyder & Gangestad, 1986). Before doing so, participants read one of two instructional sets: females are more likely than males to betray their romantic partners; people in general are likely to betray their romantic partners. Participants responded …
