Tuberculosis In Diabetic Patients: A Clinical Perspective, V. Nissapatorn, I. Kuppusamy, I. Jamaiah, Mun Yik Fong, M. Rohela, A.K. Anuar

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This retrospective and descriptive study was a report on the clinical situation of tuberculosis in diabetic patients, with 1,651 patients recruited. The mean age of TBDM patients was significantly higher than that of non-diabetic patients (p<0.05). Moreover, TBDM patients had a higher ratio of male to female than the other group. The significant proportion of TB appeared to increase steadily with age in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic ones (p<0.05). However, they showed similarities in terms of sex, race, marital status, present address, and occupation. A higher percentage of pulmonary tuberculosis (91.4) was shown in the TBDM group. We found that both groups had no differences in the radiological findings, with opacity or cavity of the upper lobe involvement being 89 and 91 in TBDM and non-diabetic groups, respectively. TBDM patients were shown to have more treatment success (33.3), particularly the pulmonary type of tuberculosis in the longer duration ( 9 months). Further findings demonstrated that a lower proportion of the TBDM group defaulted in their treatment (19.8) and experienced resistance to anti-tubercular therapy (1.4) compared to non-diabetics.

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This retrospective study was conducted at the National Tuberculosis Center (NTBC) where 252 HIV-positive patients coexisting with tuberculosis (TB/HIV) were examined. We found that patients with pulmonary (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPT) had similar mean age. A higher sex ratio between male to female (10.7:1) was observed in patients with PTB. The other characteristics of patients with pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis were not statistically different from each other. Cough (88) and hemoptysis were the most common presenting symptoms, significantly related to patients with PTB. Lymphadenopathy (33.5) was the most common sign in patients with EPT. The majority of patients with …

A Novel Approach To Classify Risk In Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (Dhf) Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (Bia), F. Ibrahim, M.N. Taib, W.A.B. Wan Abas, C.C. Guan, S. Sulaiman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper introduces a novel approach to classify the risk in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients using the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) technique. This in vivo technique involves the application of a small average constant current of less than 1 mA at a single frequency of 50 kHz through the human body, and measurement of the body's bioelectrical resistance (R), phase angle (α), body capacitance (BC) and capacitive reactance (Xc) via four surface electrodes. BIA measurements have been conducted on 184 (97 males and 87 females) serological confirmed dengue patients during their hospitalization in University Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital, Malaysia. The …

Ovitrap surveillance was conducted in two urban residential areas (Taman Samudera Timur and Taman Samudera Selatan) and in a settlement area (Kampung Banjar), which is located 16 km from Kuala Lumpur city center, Malaysia. In Taman Samudera, dengue cases were reported monthly in 2003/2004. Thus, a study was initiated to determine the distribution and abundance of dengue vectors, Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. The ovitrap surveillance indicated that Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were present both indoors and outdoors. The residential sites had 73 - 79 of the ovitraps with just Ae. aegypti population and Kg. Banjar had 56 of …

Human Enterovirus 71 Subgenotype B3 Lacks Coxsackievirus A16-Like Neurovirulence In Mice Infection, Y.F. Chan, Sazaly Abubakar Jan 2005

Human Enterovirus 71 Subgenotype B3 Lacks Coxsackievirus A16-Like Neurovirulence In Mice Infection, Y.F. Chan, Sazaly Abubakar

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Background: At least three different EV-71 subgenotypes were identified from an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998. The subgenotypes C2 and B4 were associated with the severe and fatal infections, whereas the B3 virus was associated with mild to subclinical infections. The B3 virus genome sequences had â¥85 similarity at the 3' end to CV-A16. This offers opportunities to examine if there are characteristic similarities and differences in virulence between CV-A16, EV-71 B3 and EV- 71 B4 and to determine if the presence of the CV-A16-liked genes in EV-71 B3 would also confer the virus with a CV-A16-liked neurovirulence in mice …

The Use Of Prebirth Parentage Orders In Surrogacy Proceedings, Mary P. Byrn, Steven H. Synder Jan 2005

The Use Of Prebirth Parentage Orders In Surrogacy Proceedings, Mary P. Byrn, Steven H. Synder

Faculty Scholarship

Prebirth parentage orders are often sought by parties to surrogacy agreements to formalize the intent of the parties to the agreement before the child is born. Such orders declare the intended parents to be the legal parents of the child. This article discusses the benefits of such orders, as well as the difficulties in obtaining them. The availability and efficacy of prebirth parentage orders depends on many factors including the type of surrogacy arrangement, the state law that governs the proceeding, and whether the parties are in unanimous agreement. This article analyzes the various factors which impact whether obtaining a …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Angio-oedema may be hereditary or acquired and is characterised by episodes of potentially life threatening localised tissue oedema and swelling resulting from deficiency of compliment pathway C1 esterase inhibitor. Acquired angio-oedema is about ten times less frequent than the hereditary type and has been associated with immune-deficiency disorders, malignancies and exposure to specific medications and food substances. We present a case of seven year old, human immune-deficiency virus positive girl, who developed gross swelling of the tongue and neck while on treatment for pneumococcal meningitis with ceftriaxone. Difficulties in arriving at a definitive diagnosis of angio-oedema in a resource poor …

An online class on Preparing for College was designed and developed. This class was delivered to three second level schools in Kerry who had shown an interest in taking part. None of the three schools had the ICT facilities required to accommodate such a learning environment. All students were required to fill out an online questionnaire in order to determine their reaction to the …

Employment Restructuring In Polish Companies During Economic Transition: Some Comparisons With Western Experience, Tomasz Mroczkowski, Mark Wermus, Linda D. Clarke Jan 2005

Employment Restructuring In Polish Companies During Economic Transition: Some Comparisons With Western Experience, Tomasz Mroczkowski, Mark Wermus, Linda D. Clarke

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper summarizes the results of a survey of downsizing practices in 90 Polish manufacturing companies. Unlike Russia, where very few employment reductions have been carried out, downsizing in Polish companies is pervasive and appears to be accelerating. The factors that drive downsizing in a transition economy like Poland are not the same as those in the west. Nonetheless, the results of this study indicate that downsizing in Poland has had mostly beneficial effects on company functioning.

Booni Valley Women’S Perception Of Schooling: Hopes And Barriers, Almina Pardhan Jan 2005

Booni Valley Women’S Perception Of Schooling: Hopes And Barriers, Almina Pardhan

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Schooling for girls is a relatively recent process in Booni Valley, a remote mountainous village in Chitral District, Pakistan. It is impacting greatly upon the lives of the women. This study has taken an ethnographic perspective and has assumed that an understanding of women’s schooling requires a detailed, in-depth account of women’s actual experiences in a specific cultural setting. The women in the study perceive their local language, Khowar, as having little value and place great importance upon learning Urdu and English, the official languages of Pakistan. The women also perceive schooling to increase their mobility and independence and to …

Historical Context And Hazardous Waste Facility Siting: Understanding Temporal Patterns In Michigan, Robin Saha, Paul Mohai Jan 2005

Historical Context And Hazardous Waste Facility Siting: Understanding Temporal Patterns In Michigan, Robin Saha, Paul Mohai

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This article tests the proposition that, beginning in the 1970s, historic growth of public environmental concern and opposition to waste facilities, as well as changes in the policy environment increasingly encouraged hazardous waste facilities siting to follow the path of least (political) resistance and resulted in environmental inequities. Our longitudinal analysis of sitings in the State of Michigan from 1950 to 1990 reveals a distinct temporal pattern supporting our hypotheses. Whereas significant racial, socioeconomic, and housing disparities at the time of siting were not in evidence for facilities sited prior to 1970, patterns of disparate siting were found for facilities …

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch Jan 2005

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Changes in global climate may exacerbate other anthropogenic stressors, accelerating the decline in distribution and abundance of rare species throughout the world. We examined the potential effects of a warming climate on the greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias), a resident salmonid that inhabits headwater streams of the central Rocky Mountains. Greenbacks are outcompeted at lower elevations by nonnative species of trout and currently are restricted to upper-elevation habitats where barriers to upstream migration by nonnatives are or have been established. We used likelihood-based techniques and information theoretics to select models predicting stream temperature changes for 10 streams where greenback …

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle Jan 2005

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades an increased number of paraeducators have been hired to work with special education teachers (French & Pickett, 1997, Stanovich, 1996). There has been a concurrent shift in paraeducator responsibilities. Instead of primarily providing clerical support, paraeducators are now expected to provide instructional support to the most challenging students in the system (i.e., those with disabilities) (Giangreco, Broer, Edelman, 1999). Numerous researchers, educators, and members of professional organizations have noted concerns about the training and/or lack thereof for paraeducators (French & Pickett, 1997). Debate exists regarding whether or not paraeducators possess adequate training and skills to …

Streambank Erosion Associated With Grazing Practices In The Humid Region, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Stephen R. Workman, José R. Bicudo, Benjamin K. Koostra, Eric S. Vanzant, Joseph L. Taraba

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The effects of cattle grazing on stream stability have been well documented for the western portion of the U.S., but are lacking for the east. Stream and riparian damage resulting from grazing can include alterations in watershed hydrology, changes to stream morphology, soil compaction and erosion, destruction of vegetation, and water quality impairments. However, few studies have examined the successes of best management practices (BMPs) for mitigating these effects. The objective of this project was to assess the ability of two common BMPs to reduce streambank erosion along a central Kentucky stream. The project site consisted of two replications of …
