The Relationship Of Burnout To Contextual Work Factors For Rural Community Mental Health Counselors, Antoinette Petrazzi-Woods Jan 2005

The Relationship Of Burnout To Contextual Work Factors For Rural Community Mental Health Counselors, Antoinette Petrazzi-Woods

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Burnout is a job-related hazard for human service employees including rural community mental health counselors. Historically, burnout was perceived more as a problem with an individual than a problem with an organization. Contemporary burnout research has recommended expanding the theoretical framework of burnout to include organizational sources of burnout. Consequently, burnout is described as an individual syndrome, consisting of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of personal accomplishment, mediated within the work context. The purpose of this survey research was to describe the relationship between burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment), as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey …

The Role Of The Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan In Virulence, Jennifer Roguskie Jan 2005

The Role Of The Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan In Virulence, Jennifer Roguskie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pili of P. aeruginosa 1244 are involved in a post-translational modification in which an acidic carbohydrate moiety structurally similar to the lipopolysaccahride (LPS) O-antigen is covalently attached to the pilin protein. It has been shown that this associated glycan is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the pilus. Because of its prime location along the pilus, experiments were conducted to determine if the pilin glycan contributed to the virulence of P. aeruginosa. Initial studies involved the assessment of LD50 values to demonstrate that acquisition of the exoU gene increased the virulence of PA1244. Interestingly, the LD50 studies suggested …

Migrant Mobilization: Factors Contributing To The Success Of The Coalition Of Immokaleee Workers, Jane Walsh Jan 2005

Migrant Mobilization: Factors Contributing To The Success Of The Coalition Of Immokaleee Workers, Jane Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What factors have facilitated the success of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW)? This is the key question that this study attempts to answer. The answer to this question can provide valuable lessons for other farmworker organizations and unions. Social movement literature emphasizes 1) effective leadership; 2) collective identity; 3) the strategic use of various sources of power; 4) conscience constituency involvement; and 5) political opportunities as factors necessary for mobilization. I have used these five factors to analyze the success of the CIW.

The design of this research study includes both participant-observation and in-depth interviews. Subjects for in-person interviews …

Recasting Hegel's Ethical Theory, Theresa Wambui Jan 2005

Recasting Hegel's Ethical Theory, Theresa Wambui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the contribution of George Wilhelm Hegel to the modern ethical reflection in which the state is understood as an ethical institution. The goal of this study is to recast Hegel's ethical theory in order to enable his ethical thought to contribute to contemporary reflection on global ethical issues. At issue in Hegel's discourse is the problem of individual and community freedom. Hegel's thesis hinges on the notion of the 'truth' as 'the whole.' In Herbert Marcuse's interpretation, the truth and the whole is freedom. Hegel's ethical theory aims to resolve the tension between individual and communal …

Childhood Fire-Setting: A Contextual Understanding, Andrew Ward Jan 2005

Childhood Fire-Setting: A Contextual Understanding, Andrew Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research on fire-setting has been either totally theoretical or has been based on limited contact with individuals who set the fires. This dissertation accessed fire-setting through interviews with three male adults who set fires as children. Background information was acquired from the participants to construct the context in which each instance of fire-setting occurred. The purpose of this project was to understand each individual's life as a child in relation to his fire-setting behavior.

The initial goal of this project was to gain access to the actual experience of setting a fire; however, this proved to be an elusive …

Bakke, Grutter, And The Principle Of Subsidiarity, Peter Widulski Jan 2005

Bakke, Grutter, And The Principle Of Subsidiarity, Peter Widulski

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

When seeking to civilly commit an inmate nearing release from prison, states often adopt a formulation of mental responsibility for criminal behavior that is inconsistent with the standard on which they rely when rebutting a criminal insanity defense. Defendants are permitted to raise certain incapacity defenses in one context, and yet they are prohibited from advancing those same defenses in another. As a result, many states may seek criminal punishment on the theory that a defendant is legally sane and then later argue that the same person has a serious mental abnormality characterized by a propensity to engage in criminal …

Effect Of Genetic Variation On The Formation Of Hepatocarcinogenic Metabolites Of Trichloroethylene Using Chloral Hydrate Studies (An Interdisciplinary Approach), Apryl Bronley-Delancey Jan 2005

Effect Of Genetic Variation On The Formation Of Hepatocarcinogenic Metabolites Of Trichloroethylene Using Chloral Hydrate Studies (An Interdisciplinary Approach), Apryl Bronley-Delancey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is listed with the EPA as a suspected human carcinogen and is ubiquitous in the environment (US EPA 1992). Chloral hydrate (CH) is a sedative drug and a cytochrome P450 (CYP 450)-derived metabolite of TCE (Klaassen 2001). Chloral hydrate is metabolized in the liver to the rodent hepatocarcinogen trichloroacetate (TCA) by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), and to the non-carcinogenic metabolite trichloroethanol (TCEOH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) (Klaassen 2001). Both ALDH and ADH are polymorphic in humans which can presumably predict the disposition of chloral hydrate into the carcinogenic vs. non-carcinogenic pathways. The likelihood is then raised that subpopulations of …

Prenatal Care Utilization As A Predictor Of Failure To Thrive, Cynthia L. Allen

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This case-control study used an academic health sciences center sample to examine differences in prenatal care utilization (defined by the number of prenatal care visits and gestational age at entry into prenatal care) between failure to thrive infants and healthy infants; and test prenatal care utilization as a predictor of failure to thrive. This study described maternal bonding characteristics (prenatal care utilization, infant length of hospital stay, feeding method, frequency of all/visits, and discharge teaching) of hospitalized failure to thrive infants. Using the Medical University of South Carolina Perinatal Information System, Keane System, and Practice Partner databases, a study sample …

The Impact Of The Variability Hypothesis On Margaret F. Washburn's And Mary W. Calkins' Parodoxical Relations With Faculty In Their Graduate Programs, Ginger Hudson, Ann N. Elliott Jan 2005

The Impact Of The Variability Hypothesis On Margaret F. Washburn's And Mary W. Calkins' Parodoxical Relations With Faculty In Their Graduate Programs, Ginger Hudson, Ann N. Elliott

Modern Psychological Studies

This paper offers a possible explanation for the paradoxical relations for two of psychology's 19th century female pioneers with faculty members in their graduate programs: Margaret F Washburn and James M. Cattell at Columbia University; and Mary W. Calkins and Hugo Munsterberg at Harvard University. Cattell's and Munsterberg's strong support and advocacy for these female graduate students appear contradictory to their general beliefs regarding women's intellectual capacities and pursuit of higher education. However, it is suggested that their views were, in fact, consistent with the variability hypothesis, which drew a sharp distinction between "average" and "exceptional" women. It is further …

Comparative Advertising In The United States And In France, Charlotte J. Romano Jan 2005

Comparative Advertising In The United States And In France, Charlotte J. Romano

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Comparative advertising has been widely used for over thirty years in the United States. By contrast, the use of this advertising format has traditionally been-and still is-very marginal in France. The term "comparative advertising" refers to any form of advertising in which a trademark owner draws a comparison between his product, service, or brand and that of a competitor. The central issue of this article is to determine why, despite identical guiding policies, comparative advertising remains unusual in France while it is commonplace in the United States. Attempting to answer that question unavoidably raises numerous related issues: can the two …

Changes In Groundwater Quality In A Conduit-Flow-Dominated Karst Aquifer As A Result Of Best Management Practices, James C. Currens

Report of Investigations--KGS

Water quality in the Pleasant Grove Spring karst groundwater basin was monitored to determine the effectiveness of best management practices (BMP’s) implemented through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Water Quality Incentive Program (WQIP). The project was divided into three phases. Phase I, beginning in August 1990, was the initial reconnaissance of the hydrogeology and water quality of the basin. Phase II, beginning in October 1993, monitored the water quality for 1 year prior to BMP implementation. This phase was followed by a 1-year interim extension, which continued the monitoring. Phase III monitored the water quality during and following BMP implementation. …
