Fears And Fascinations: Representing Catholicism In The American South, Thomas F. Haddox Nov 2005

Fears And Fascinations: Representing Catholicism In The American South, Thomas F. Haddox

Literature

This innovative book charts what has been a largely unexplored literary landscape, looking at the work of such diverse writers as the gens de couleur libre poets of antebellum New Orleans, Kate Chopin, Mark Twain, Carson McCullers, Margaret Mitchell, Allen Tate, Caroline Gordon, Flannery O'Connor, Walker Percy, and John Kennedy Toole. Haddox shows that Catholicism and its Church have always been a presence, albeit in different ways, in the southern cultural tradition.

For some, Catholicism has been associated with miscegenation and with the political aspirations of African-Americans; for others, it has served as the model for the feudal and patriarchal …

Practical Reason, Instrumental Irrationality, And Time, Manuel R. Vargas Nov 2005

Practical Reason, Instrumental Irrationality, And Time, Manuel R. Vargas

Philosophy

Standard models of practical rationality face a puzzle that has gone unnoticed: given a modest assumption about the nature of deliberation, we are apparently frequently briefly irrational. I explain the problem, consider what is wrong with several possible solutions, and propose an account that does not generate the objectionable result.

A Jeffersonian Republic By Hamiltonian Means: Values, Constraints & Finance In An Authentic American Ownership Society, Robert C. Hockett Nov 2005

A Jeffersonian Republic By Hamiltonian Means: Values, Constraints & Finance In An Authentic American Ownership Society, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article, the second in a trilogy, interprets American ownership-spreading programs past and present under the aspect of a comprehensive theory of "the American ownership society" (OS) developed in its predecessor article, titled Whose Ownership? Which Society? It also identifies what appears to be a significant gap in our efforts to become a comprehensive OS thus far.

By early in the 20th century, we had developed and implemented a number of highly innovative and successful programs dedicated to the task of spreading human and nonhuman capital (in the form of arable land in particular) quite broadly. Since about the 1930s, …

Federal Mandatory Minimum Drug Sentences: Weapon In The War On Drugs Or War On Blacks, Crystal S. Byrd

McCabe Thesis Collection

This study will attempt to determine the direct and indirect consequences of Federal mandatory minimum drug sentences and drug policy to African Americans. It will examine statistics on drug use, arrest, convictions, and incarceration of African Americans. These statistics will be gathered from several government agencies and will be used to determine if American drug policy discriminates against African Americans. The purpose of this study is to inform and educate African Americans about Federal mandatory minimum drug sentences and the impact they are having on Black communities and to provide links to resources that can be used to promote drug …

Efficacy Studies Of Malaria Treatments In Africa: Efficient Estimation With Missing Indicators Of Failure, Rhoderick N. Machekano, Grant Dorsey, Alan E. Hubbard Nov 2005

Efficacy Studies Of Malaria Treatments In Africa: Efficient Estimation With Missing Indicators Of Failure, Rhoderick N. Machekano, Grant Dorsey, Alan E. Hubbard

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Efficacy studies of malaria treatments can be plagued by indeterminate outcomes for some patients. The study motivating this paper defines the outcome of interest (treatment failure) as recrudescence and for some subjects, it is unclear whether a recurrence of malaria is due to that or new infection. This results in a specific kind of missing data. The effect of missing data in causal inference problems is widely recognized. Methods that adjust for possible bias from missing data include a variety of imputation procedures (extreme case analysis, hot-deck, single and multiple imputation), inverse weighting methods, and likelihood based methods (data augmentation, …

Production And Handling Practices For Safe Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris Nov 2005

Production And Handling Practices For Safe Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture received a grant from the USDA’s Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems program to help small- and medium-sized farms become more profitable and to therefore add stability to the family farm. One approach to doing this is to help farmers growing produce reduce or eliminate safety hazards which may be associated with their products.
