The Preparation Of In Vivo Lead X-Ray Fluorescence System Using 99mtc, Yusoff Mohd Amin, R.H. Mahat, W.M. Loon Jan 2005

The Preparation Of In Vivo Lead X-Ray Fluorescence System Using 99mtc, Yusoff Mohd Amin, R.H. Mahat, W.M. Loon

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

99mTc is widely used in hospital for nuc1ear medical examination such as scintigraphy of brain and thyroid. The gamma energy emitted by the 99mTc (140.50 keY) is used to produce X-ray fluorescence of the lead atoms present in bones. Being an internal source it is expected the fluorescence efficiency to increase. Using a surface barrier X-ray detection system, we have found the minimum detectable concentration (MDC), of lead in bone phantom, is 500 ppm using K-edge X-ray. The bone phantom consists of 10 ml polythene test-tube filled with saline solution and sodium (99mTc) pertechnetate of activity ranging from 7.4 III …

Gary Paul Nabhan, Gioia Woods Jan 2005

Gary Paul Nabhan, Gioia Woods

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Between spoonfuls of posole at the Morning Glory Cafe in Flagstaff, Arizona, Gary Paul Nabhan mused about the distinctive character of western American literature. “What is western literature about?” I asked him. Without hesitation, he replied, “It is about a process of disorientation and reorientation.” The mountains, sand dunes, and canyons of the western landscape govern western imagination. That landscape, he believes, is responsible for the dis- and reorientation that characterizes the work of many western writers. Nabhan continued, “I should say that in an odd way, that’s even true of Native American literature [....] Leslie Silko writes about the …

Female Genital Cutting Among The Somali Of Kenya And Management Of Its Complications, Guyo W. Jaldesa, Ian Askew, Carolyne Njue, Monica Wanjiru Jan 2005

Female Genital Cutting Among The Somali Of Kenya And Management Of Its Complications, Guyo W. Jaldesa, Ian Askew, Carolyne Njue, Monica Wanjiru

Reproductive Health

The Somali community living in Kenya (and in their native Somalia) has practiced the severest form of female genital cutting (FGC)—infibulation—for centuries. To understand the context within which the practice takes place, and how its complications are managed, the Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program undertook a diagnostic study that confirmed that FGC is a deeply rooted and widely supported cultural practice. Several closely related reasons are used to sustain the practice: religious obligation, family honor, and virginity as a prerequisite for marriage; an aesthetic preference for infibulated genitalia was also mentioned. The study also found that the health …

Technical Assistance And Training For Procosi Operations Research Program, Bolivia, Fernando Gonzales Salguero, Ricardo Vernon

Reproductive Health

In September 1999, PROCOSI, a Bolivian network of 24 nongovernmental organizations that provide health services, invited the Population Council Frontiers in Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) program to provide technical assistance for designing and conducting operations research aimed at increasing the quality and impact of their reproductive health programs. In collaboration with PROCOSI, FRONTIERS conducted four training workshops on design of operations research projects, qualitative research methods, utilization and dissemination of research results, and preparing research reports. Technical assistance on other topics, such as developing research instruments, creating databases, and using EpiInfo for transcribing and analyzing data was provided on-site to each …

Enquêtes D'Acceptation De Paiment Destinées À Déterminer Les Prix Des Produits Et Services Dans Le Domaine De La Santé De La Reproduction : Manuel De L'Utilisateur, Karen G. Fleischman Foreit, James R. Foreit

Reproductive Health

Involving Men In Maternity Care: Health Service Delivery Issues, Saiqa Mullick, Busi Kunene, Monica Wanjiru

Reproductive Health

Men in South Africa have traditionally not been involved in the reproductive health care of their partners. They do not normally accompany their partners to family planning or antenatal care consultations, and are mostly absent during labour and delivery. Partner notification and treatment for sexually transmitted infections have also remained problematic due to several factors, including poor power relations between men and women, lack of knowledge and men’s interest in their partner’s reproductive health, and poor couple communication. | In 2001, the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU) of Witwatersrand University, in partnership with the FRONTIERS Program of Population Council and …

Is It Too Late For Title Vi Enforcement?: Seeking Redemption Of The Unequal United States‟ Long Term Care System Through International Means, Ruqaiijah Yearby

Legal and medical experts have noted continued racism in the health care system that prevents the equal distribution of quality care. Initially most racism was intentional and expressed through de jure segregation, as evidenced by federal funding of the construction of racial segregated health care facilities. Now most racism, expressed through de facto segregation, is subtly incorporated into the daily practices of institutions causing an adverse disparate impact on African-Americans. This institutional racism establishes separate and independent barriers through the neutral denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of the institutions …

Owning Persons: The Application Of Property Theory To Embryos And Fetuses, Jessica Wilen Berg Jan 2005

Owning Persons: The Application Of Property Theory To Embryos And Fetuses, Jessica Wilen Berg

Faculty Publications

Embryos are all over the news. According to the New York Times there are currently 400,000 frozen embryos in storage. Headlines proclaim amazing advances in our understanding of embryonic stem cells. And legislation involving cloning and embryos continues to be hotly debated. Despite the media attention, theoretical analysis of embryos' legal status is lacking.

This article advances a number of novel arguments. First, recognition of property interests does not preclude the recognition of personhood interests. Embryos, fetuses and children may be both persons and property. Second, property law is conceptually more suited to resolving debates about embryos than procreative liberty, …

Judicial Federalism And The Future Of Federal Environmental Regulation, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2005

Judicial Federalism And The Future Of Federal Environmental Regulation, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

This article assesses the current and likely impact of the Supreme Court's federalism cases on federal environmental regulation. As a result of this assessment, the article seeks to make four points: (1) Thus far, the Supreme Court's federalism cases have had a limited impact on federal regulation, as federal courts have not used these cases as a basis for limiting the reach of federal regulatory authority. (2) Notwithstanding this limited impact, the underlying logic of the Supreme Court's cases does pose a challenge for federal regulation, particularly in the Commerce Clause context. (3) The thrust of the federalism cases makes …

Being The Government Means (Almost) Never Having To Say You’Re Sorry: The Sam Sheppard Case And The Meaning Of Wrongful Imprisonment, Jonathan L. Entin Jan 2005

Being The Government Means (Almost) Never Having To Say You’Re Sorry: The Sam Sheppard Case And The Meaning Of Wrongful Imprisonment, Jonathan L. Entin

Faculty Publications

Dr. Sam Sheppard was at the center of the highest profile crime in Ohio history. As the Ohio Supreme Court put it, the case contained "[m]urder and mystery, society, sex and suspense." Sheppard's conviction was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark 1966 ruling, but the controversy over the case continues to the present. The final legal chapter in the story may have been written with an unsuccessful wrongful-imprisonment lawsuit brought by the Sheppard estate in April 2000.

This paper uses the long debate over the Sheppard case as a vehicle for exploring the concept of wrongful imprisonment. …

Looking Ahead To The 2005-06 Term (2005), Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

This essay surveys the upcoming 2005-06 term of the Supreme Court, a term that may be as notable for what it says about the future direction of the Supreme Court as it is for specific decisions in any particular cases. This does not mean the term lacks important cases. To the contrary, this coming year the Court will consider the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment, address the application of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to religious use of drugs, and determine whether the federal government can effectively preempt Oregon's decision to legalize doctor-assisted suicide. It will revisit contemporary federalism and …

Race, Trust, Altruism, And Reciprocity, George W. Dent Jan 2005

Race, Trust, Altruism, And Reciprocity, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

Trust, altruism and reciprocity are attracting growing attention from scholars. Interest began with psychological experiments showing that people often are altruistic, trust others, and reciprocate the benevolence of others far more than economic models of "rational" human selfishness predict. These findings inspired social scientists to discover what factors promote or hinder cooperation. Legal scholars have employed this learning to determine how the law does or could facilitate or discourage cooperation in many contexts, including business transactions and the workplace. The influence of race on cooperation has been studied in specific areas, but so far no one has considered how the …

Reconciling Morality And Moral Responsibility In The Law: A Due Process Challenge To The Inconsistent Mental Responsibility Standards At Play In Criminal Insanity Defenses And Sexually Violent Predator Civil Commitment Hearings, Jeremy T. Price Jan 2005

Reconciling Morality And Moral Responsibility In The Law: A Due Process Challenge To The Inconsistent Mental Responsibility Standards At Play In Criminal Insanity Defenses And Sexually Violent Predator Civil Commitment Hearings, Jeremy T. Price

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

When seeking to civilly commit an inmate nearing release from prison, states often adopt a formulation of mental responsibility for criminal behavior that is inconsistent with the standard on which they rely when rebutting a criminal insanity defense. Defendants are permitted to raise certain incapacity defenses in one context, and yet they are prohibited from advancing those same defenses in another. As a result, many states may seek criminal punishment on the theory that a defendant is legally sane and then later argue that the same person has a serious mental abnormality characterized by a propensity to engage in criminal …

Josephine Miles, Erik Muller Jan 2005

Josephine Miles, Erik Muller

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“You could say I saw California grow up. Right along with me!” So Josephine Miles linked her life and region (Childress 40). The link between her poetry and California has not always been declared by the poet or detected by her readers. Miles mused upon the problem: “Sometimes there’s a certain kind of critic that says I’m a California poet [. . .] he says I have a lot of loose lines and a lot of locale. But then another critic will say, ‘She’s not to be identified as anything but English because her poetry is rather neat and universal’” …

The Arguments Of Their Lives: A Role For Lives In Moral Reflection And Moral Teaching (2005), Peter Shea Jan 2005

The Arguments Of Their Lives: A Role For Lives In Moral Reflection And Moral Teaching (2005), Peter Shea

Collected Papers of Peter Shea

Moral philosophers and teachers of ethics generally make episodes, cases, and stories the focus of their practical reflection. In this dissertation, I investigate the possible roles of richer accounts or investigations of lives in the research and teaching of practical ethics. By giving a close reading of passages from three central philosophic texts, Mill’s On Liberty, Plato’s Crito, and Descartes’ Discourse on Method, I show how attention to richly described lives is grounded in the tradition of Western philosophic inquiry. These readings also serve as the starting points for arguments about the importance of consideration of lives …

The Stl Model: A Three-Dimensional Perspective On Organizational Change Programs, Manoj S. Patankar Ph.D., Thomas Bigda-Peyton Ph.D., Jeffery Brown M. Ed. Jan 2005

The Stl Model: A Three-Dimensional Perspective On Organizational Change Programs, Manoj S. Patankar Ph.D., Thomas Bigda-Peyton Ph.D., Jeffery Brown M. Ed.

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

This paper examines organizational change programs across aviation, healthcare, and financial services sectors. Based on the analysis of three key programs, a theoretical model, which could be used to describe the state of any organizational change program, is presented. This model is called the STL Model and is represented by three mutually perpendicular axes: scalability, transferability, and longevity. In simplest terms, scalability refers to “volume;” greater the volume of users of, or participants in, a particular change program, the greater the scalability of that change program. Transferability refers to the number of user-groups, whether within a specific discipline or outside. …
