Clinical Review Of Pediatric Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan Jan 2005

Clinical Review Of Pediatric Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan

Neurosciences

Seizure disorders are very common and represent the most common cause of referrals to pediatric neurology. Epilepsy, defined as recurrent unprovoked seizures, is also common with a frequency of 4-8 cases per 1000 children. In Saudi Arabia, inherited neurological disorders, including epilepsy and genetic epilepsy syndromes, are more common because of the high rate of consanguinity. This article attempts to provide an updated overview of pediatric epilepsy and review the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. Seizures in children have wide variations in clinical expression with age specific presentation. Although epilepsy is a clinical diagnosis, EEG often provides supportive evidence …

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi Jan 2005

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi

Neurosciences

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a well-recognized heterogeneous psychiatric disorder, associated with high morbidity and mortality with several medical complications. Besides a brief review, this paper also reports on a single female patient with AN. Eating disorders are reported to be slightly more common among western cultures, but developing countries are not immune to eating disorders. This patient showed both the psychopathology of abnormal eating behavior and serious physical complications and despite all possible treatment interventions, she ultimately died. We discuss different aspects of AN including the importance of constant social support from key relatives.

Neurosciences

We report a 60-year-old Saudi patient with the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and a novel mutation in the presenilin gene. We investigated mutations in the presenilin-1 gene in Saudi patients with AD using polymerase chain reaction and direct DNA sequencing methods. We extracted genomic DNA from the whole blood of both patients and normal control individuals. We sequenced and compared amplicons with the sequences of the respective exons of normal individuals as well as data available in GenBank. We detected a homozygous mutation (g-c) in exon 12, resulting in the missense mutation (Arg377Thr), in the DNA of a …

Neurocysticercosis In Central Saudi Arabia, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Abdurahman M. Al-Moghairi, Fathi N. El Zain, Wassim S. Al-Zayer Jan 2005

Neurocysticercosis In Central Saudi Arabia, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Abdurahman M. Al-Moghairi, Fathi N. El Zain, Wassim S. Al-Zayer

Neurosciences

Neurocysticercosis is a disease endemic in pork breeding societies. It exhibits itself by the sudden development of seizures in an apparently healthy individual, a rather nonspecific symptom. In its own cultural circles, diagnosis is easy because of the higher incidence and prevalence of the ailment. However in cultures whose religion excludes the breeding of pork, such as Islamic countries, diagnosis depends on an often forgotten spiritual history, which we believe may have a place as the fourth epidemiologic criterion in the revised diagnostic criteria for neurocysticercosis.

Characteristics Of Beef Cattle That Determine The Price Difference Between Traditional And Cph Sales, Terry L. Lunsford Jan 2005

Characteristics Of Beef Cattle That Determine The Price Difference Between Traditional And Cph Sales, Terry L. Lunsford

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Cattle producers are faced with difficult decisions on how they market theircalves. This study examines the different characteristics that play a role in determiningthe price of a group of animals. Identifying characteristics that determine pricedifferentials relative to the price premium given to producers participating in CPH salesis important information when producers are making a marketing decision. The modeldeveloped in this study provides producers with evidence of what characteristics generatethe highest price, as well as relative differences between sales locations and types ofsales. The more information available to producers, the better equipped they are to makedecisions.

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack Jan 2005

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Nearly thirty years ago the state of Florida launched a campaign against homosexual adoptions. What began in Miami with a public debate over a referendum to make discrimination based on sexual orientation unlawful ended with a community divided and a welfare system taxed even further. "In 1977, Florida became the first state to statutorily ban adoption by gay or lesbian adults by enacting the homosexual adoption provision. Currently, it is the only state with such a prohibition."

He Hath A Heart For Harping: Stephen Harper And Election Spending In A Spendthrift Age, Richard Haigh Jan 2005

He Hath A Heart For Harping: Stephen Harper And Election Spending In A Spendthrift Age, Richard Haigh

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The decision by the Supreme Court of Canada in Harper v. Canada was not favourable to Stephen Harper. In a split decision, the Court held that the latest federal campaign spending limits were acceptable. This paper briefly examines the recent history of election financing laws in Canada and looks briefly at three distinct aspects of the Harper decision: The irony of Stephen Harper’s position in the case, evidential and conceptual problems associated with equating commercial speech with political speech, and an examination of whether financial restraints are of declining importance in an era where political influence is more subtly obtained. …

Is There A Perfect Diet? A Comparison Between The Atkins, South Beach, And Metabolic Typing Diets., Neil Habgood

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis will seek to answer the often perplexing question: "How should I eat in order to lose weight and feel better?" Is your goal to lose 10 pounds? Is your goal to lose 100 pounds? Or is your goal simply to live a healthy, pain-free lifestyle? In this paper I will examine two of the most popular diets today, The South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet. I will compare these two diets to another diet known as The Metabolic Typing Diet. I will also explore the psychological impact of positive thinking and goals setting. Ultimately, I will be …

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries Jan 2005

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Environmental intervention projects aim to re-engineer the cultural landscape. Entering at a particular moment in time, such projects commonly produce a "baseline" analysis. This analysis captures elements in the environment that are later compared to measured changes the project claims to produce. Illustrated through a case study of a Tanzanian community conservation non-governmental organization, the argument made in this paper is that uncritical use of such baselines in measuring and evaluating environmental intervention projects is a practice that tends to impose ahistorical understandings of human-environmental relationships that have deep historical roots. The paper illustrates how an attempt to draw a …

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion Jan 2005

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion

Swiss American Historical Society Review

People do not generally associate the sixteenth century in Europe with religious tolerance and such an attitude is understandable, but it overlooks the small but relatively tolerant country of Switzerland. Elsewhere in Europe there was then, in fact, a great deal of religious intolerance and persecution. A few examples will illustrate very nicely how intolerant other European countries were at that time toward other religions.

The Elusive Ellen: Reconstructing The Life Of Ellen Dawson And The World Around Her., David Lee Mcmullen

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

This thesis is a life and times biography of Ellen Dawson (Kanki), 1900-1967, a working class Scottish woman who became a leading communist labor activist in the United States. As a young textile worker in Barrhead, she was influenced by the events of Red Clydeside, perhaps the most turbulent period of labor unrest in Scottish history. After World War I, she and her family migrated to Lancashire, where she worked first as a spinner and then as a weaver. In 1921, she lead her family to the United States, where she went to work in a textile mill on the …
