Two experiments were conducted over two years to evaluate effects of two developmental systems on performance and economics of long yearling steer production. Steers were wintered in the normal system with corn residue grazing and dry lot hay feeding, with 5 lb per day wet corn gluten feed as a supplement. Intensively managed steers were given 6 lb per day wet corn gluten feed and implanted with Ralgro® at the beginning of the wintering period and Synovex S® at the beginning of the dry lot phase. In addition, intensively managed steers were removed from summer pasture early. Intensive system steers …

Recognition And Treatment Of Adolescent Substance Abuse: Who Are The Substance Abusers?, Lori Beckwith, Shea Bailey
Perspectives In Learning
There is a serious threat to the health and well being of America today: the threat of substance abuse. It affects everyone on some level: the friend’s child who is always in trouble with the law, the family member whose activities are kept secret, or the work colleague who habitually calls in sick. For many, the abuser lives in their own home. The problem of abuse is not discriminating; it can even start in early adolescence. When the individual who is using is an adolescent, it affects their parents, peers, school, and community. In a study by the U.S. Department …

Child And Adolescent Depression And Suicide: The Role Of The School Counselor In Assessment And Treatment, Naomi M. Hitchcock, Leigh Lovelette
Child And Adolescent Depression And Suicide: The Role Of The School Counselor In Assessment And Treatment, Naomi M. Hitchcock, Leigh Lovelette
Perspectives In Learning
Suicide is the third leading cause of adolescent death in the United States. This alarming statistic has been widely studied and debated for years. It has become a consensus that because adolescents spend more than a third of their time in school, suicide intervention strategies must be put into place school-wide. There has also been “heightened awareness of the need for effective crisis intervention in public schools” (Allen et al., 2002, p. 96) nationwide. Kennedy (1999) feels that teaching students about violence and prevention is just as important as teaching them to read and write. More of the responsibility for …

Constitutional Cases 2004: An Overview, Patrick J. Monahan, Evan Van Dyk
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
The 2004 year saw a number of important developments in Charter and Aboriginal rights jurisprudence. Yet 2004 was also a year of significant change for the Court, with Justices Iacobucci and Arbour, both of whom had emerged as key figures on the Court in recent years, retiring in June 2004. Indeed, a core group of Chief Justice McLachlin and Justices Iacobucci, Arbour and Fish were key to the majorities in a number of contested 5-4 decisions in early 2004. With Justices Abella and Charron joining the Court in late 2004, four of nine justices have been members for three years …

Praise And Promises, Donna Greschner
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
During the past 20 years, equality jurisprudence has not followed a straight line. But it does have points and patterns. This paper offers 15 points about section 15 that are divided into two categories: reasons for praise, and promises still to keep. They aim to place the jurisprudence in a celebratory, comparative, and critical context. Many of us reflecting upon the past 20 years have personal memories of the Charter’s entrenchment in 1982 and section 15’s activation in 1985. Legal events and processes are intertwined with personal stories. While the author connect points in a particular way, draw your own …
Informal Rules, Transactions Costs, And The Failure Of The "Takings" Law In China, Chenglin Liu
Informal Rules, Transactions Costs, And The Failure Of The "Takings" Law In China, Chenglin Liu
UC Law SF International Law Review
Since the 1990s, China has witnessed large-scale demolition projects aimed at making room for commercial development. Commercial developers have been reluctant to provide residents with compensation and relocation arrangements, resulting in tension between residents and developers. To strike a balance between economic development and private property protection, lawmakers passed several laws to regulate government takings. In March 2004, a clause was added to Article 13 of the Constitution, requiring the government to compensate private owners when their property is taken for public use. The author concludes that widespread misuse of public purpose takings and forced evictions indicate that these new …
The German Parental-Leave System As A Model For California: Creating A Race To The Top Within A Federal System, Dirk Larsen
The German Parental-Leave System As A Model For California: Creating A Race To The Top Within A Federal System, Dirk Larsen
UC Law SF International Law Review
When the U.S. Congress was drafting the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, it looked to Germany as an example of a country with generous family-leave policies as well as a strong economy. Due to opposition from the business sector and reluctance to regulate family life, the resulting legislation was much weaker than its German counterpart. Since that time, Germany's social order proved less self-sustaining than previously thought. The author compares the relative merits, successes, and failures of Germany's and California's parental-leave policies and suggests that California could stand to benefit by adopting modified aspects of the German model …

Business is often about creating change for other businesses. At times, these changes affect only the company and at other times they affect the entire industry. There is a time in the life of a business when its fundamental way of functioning is questioned and is subjected to change. That change can mean an opportunity to rise to new heights, or it might even signal the beginning of the end. This fundamental change in any business is known as an inflection point. Understanding the nature of its inflection point and responding to that point suitably will help to safeguard a …
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Thermal Barrier Coatings With Thermal Wave Imaging And Photostimulated Luminescence Spectroscopy, Barbara Franke
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Thermal Barrier Coatings With Thermal Wave Imaging And Photostimulated Luminescence Spectroscopy, Barbara Franke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gas Turbine manufacturers strive for increased operating temperatures of gas turbine engines to improve efficiency and performance. One method of increasing the temperature beyond material limits is by applying thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to hot section components. TBCs provide a thermal gradient between the hot gases and metallic substrate, and allow an increase in turbine inlet temperatures of 100-150ºC. However, spallation of TBCs can cause catastrophic failure of turbine engines by incipient melting of the substrate. To prevent such an occurrence, non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques are critical for quality control, health monitoring, and life assessment of TBCs. Two techniques in …

Benchmark Studies For Structural Health Monitoring Using Analytical And Experimental Models, Jason Lee Burkett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The latest bridge inventory report for the United States indicates that 25% of the highway bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. With such a large number of bridges in this condition, safety and serviceability concerns become increasingly relevant along with the associated increase in user costs and delays. Biennial inspections have proven subjective and need to be coupled with standardized non-destructive testing methods to accurately assess a bridge's condition for decision making purposes. Structural health monitoring is typically used to track and evaluate performance, symptoms of operational incidents, anomalies due to deterioration and damage during regular operation as well …

Stormwater Irrigation Of Saint Augustine Grass: Nitrogen Balance And Evapotranspiration, Ewoud Hulstein
Stormwater Irrigation Of Saint Augustine Grass: Nitrogen Balance And Evapotranspiration, Ewoud Hulstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A change in surface condition of a watershed, which is usually caused by development, can have measured effects on the naturally occurring hydrologic cycle and nitrogen cycle. This could result in environmental problems, such as reduced springflow and eutrophication. In an effort to address these issues, a combination of best management practices (BMPs) can be adhered to. The practice of using excess stormwater as a source for irrigation is proposed as a BMP for the minimization of impacts by development to the hydrologic and nitrogen cycles. To study the proposed BMP, a field experiment was installed in an outdoor location …

Preserving Family: Themes From A Qualitative Study Of Kin Caregivers, Don Cohon, Lisa Hines, Bruce A. Cooper, Wendy Packman, Elizabeth Siggins
Journal of Family Strengths
This article presents themes from a qualitative study of 58 African American female kinship caregivers in San Francisco. Core concepts that emerged describe various paths along which children move into kin homes, and caregivers' mixed emotional reactions to becoming surrogate parents. Women also discussed multiple family roles they assumed after taking in children. Responses highlight three primary reasons for becoming caregivers that center on providing for and protecting these children—particularly from the perceived threat of the public foster care system—and ultimately preserving the family unit. Paradoxically, caregivers' reasons mirror the stated goals of the public foster care system, which they …
