Highly Streamlined Pcr-Based Genetic Identification Of Carcharhinid Sharks (Family Carcharhinidae) For Use In Wildlife Forensics, Trade Monitoring, And Delineation Of Species Distributions, Marcy Henning
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
An increase in worldwide industrialized shark fisheries resulting from the growing demand for shark products, especially shark fins in Asian markets, as well as high levels of bycatch mortality associated with multi-species fisheries have raised suspicions of substantial declines in global shark populations. Due to varying responses by individual species to fishing pressure, it has become necessary to manage sharks on a species-specific basis, which requires the collection of more accurate catch and trade data. The accumulation of such data is hindered, however, by difficulties in identifying species from only landed carcasses, body parts, or fins. This is especially true …
Child-To-Child Helping Children In Emergencies And Affected By Conflict, Tashmin Khamis
Child-To-Child Helping Children In Emergencies And Affected By Conflict, Tashmin Khamis
Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Child-to-Child is a rights-based approach to children’s participation in promoting health and community development. The Child-to-Child approach is an educational process that links children’s learning with taking action. It is a practical way in which children’s rights can be effectively implemented.
The Child-to-Child approach has been successfully implemented since 1978. Education, health promotion and community development programmes are using the approach in over 70 countries. The Child-to-Child international network encourages and enables children and young people to promote the holistic development of the health and well-being of themselves, their families and their communities.
Federalism And The Politics Of Sentencing, Rachel E. Barkow
Federalism And The Politics Of Sentencing, Rachel E. Barkow
Faculty Articles
The politics of sentencing over the past three decades have been one- sided. Voices in favor of tougher sentences dominate the legislative debate at the state and federal levels. Those advocating on behalf of sentencing reform or alternatives to incarceration garner little attention. Although there are various options for improving deliberation in light of this political imbalance, one mechanism appears to be having an impact in many jurisdictions: a focus on the direct costs of incarceration. There is evidence from the states that tight budgets and a corresponding concern with the rising costs of existing incarceration policies have prompted greater …
Malpractice Insurance And The (Il)Legitimate Interests Of The Medical Profession In Tort Reform, Mark A. Geistfeld
Malpractice Insurance And The (Il)Legitimate Interests Of The Medical Profession In Tort Reform, Mark A. Geistfeld
Faculty Articles
Malpractice insurance does give the medical profession a legitimate interest in tort reform, although the types of reforms that can be justified on this basis differ from those that have been favored by the AMA. At present, malpractice insurance may be priced in an indefensible manner by giving physicians an incentive to move from high-risk specialties and geographic locations. This dislocation is socially costly due to the way in which it reduces patient access to care, a social cost touted by the AMA as the reason for tort reform. Some of the physicians who leave a specialty, though, will be …

Regulating Section 527 Organizations, Gregg Polsky, Guy-Uriel E. Charles
Regulating Section 527 Organizations, Gregg Polsky, Guy-Uriel E. Charles
Faculty Articles
In this Essay, we consider whether the Federal Election Commission (FEC) has the authority to regulate independent 527 organizations (e.g., Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, Moveon.org, etc.) as political committees under the Federal Election Campaign Act. This issue, which was hotly debated during the last election cycle when it was considered and ultimately tabled by the FEC, is an extremely complex one that requires a deep understanding of election, tax, administrative, and constitutional law. After considering how these areas of law intersect, we conclude that the FEC lacks the authority to regulate independent 527 organizations as political committees.
Three Essays On Labour Policy: Dissertation Summary, Chris Riddell
Three Essays On Labour Policy: Dissertation Summary, Chris Riddell
Dissertation Awards
Legislation is typically passed to accomplish some goal that benefits the majority of society. Sometimes, however, legislation leads to unanticipated and undesirable outcomes. This dissertation examines the ‘side-effects’ of three different Canadian labour laws. Chapter one examines the impact of voting laws on certification success in British Columbia from 1978 to 1998. During that time period, a voting system was introduced in 1984, and was then repealed in 1993. Chapter two examines the impact of welfare cheques on the likelihood of injection drug users leaving the hospital against medical advice (“AMA”), thereby interrupting treatment. The effect of such behavior on …

Community Partnerships For Older Adults: A Case Study, Elise J. Bolda Phd, Jane I. Lowe, George L. Maddox, Beverly S. Patnaik
Faculty Publications
Over the past several decades, federal policy has made states and communities increasingly more responsible for providing long-term care for older adults. The Community Partnerships for Older Adults, a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, saw this as an opportunity to explore new, sustainable ways to meet current and future needs for community-based long-term care. This initiative focuses on collaborative organizational partnerships, a distinctive philosophy of teaching and learning through the exchange of experience between communities, and program learning focusing on known factors promoting organizational sustainability. Using principles that emphasize the development of social capital and collective efficacy, …

The Efficacy Of Parent-Facilitated Phonological Awareness Tutoring For Kindergartners At-Risk For Reading Difficulties, Michelle J. Giguere
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the fall of 2004 Kindergarten students in a southwestern Ohio elementary school were screened for early literacy skills using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). Those parents whose children scored below the 20th percentile on initial sound fluency— determined to be at-risk for reading difficulties—were offered training on how to tutor their children. Parents (N=8) were taught games and activities from Phonemic Awareness in Young Children: A Classroom Curriculum by Marilyn Adams (1998). Those children considered at-risk whose parents chose not to participate formed the comparison group (N=7). The study used the logic of a multiple …

Trans-10,Cis-12 Cla Increases Adipocyte Lipolysis And Alters Lipid Droplet-Associated Proteins: Role Of Mtor And Erk Signaling, Soonkyu Chung, Jonathan Mark Brown, Maria Boysen Sandberg, Michael Mcintosh
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Lipid droplet-associated proteins play an important role in adipocyte triglyceride (TG) metabolism. Here, we show that trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), but not cis-9,trans-11 CLA, increased lipolysis and altered human adipocyte lipid droplet morphology. Before this change in morphology, there was a rapid trans-10,cis-12 CLA-induced increase in the accumulation of perilipin A in the cytosol, followed by the disappearance of perilipin A protein. In contrast, protein levels of adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP) were increased in cultures treated with trans-10,cis-12 CLA. Immunostaining revealed that ADRP localized to the surface …

Association Of Signr1 With Tlr4-Md-2 Enhances Signal Transduction By Recognition Of Lps In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Kojii Nagaoka, Kazuhiko Takahara, Kay Tanaka
Publications
SIGNR1, a member of a new family of mouse C-type lectins, is expressed at high levels in macrophages (Mφ) within the splenic marginal zone, lymph node medulla, and in some strains, in peritoneal cavity. We previously reported that SIGNR1 captures gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, as well as Candida albicans. We have now investigated the precise ligands and innate responses that involve SIGNR1. The interaction of SIGNR1 with FITC-dextran and E. coli was completely inhibited by LPS from E. coli and Salmonella minnesota. Using LPS from various types of rough mutants of Salmonella, we found that …
Exploring The Early Events In The Hiv-1 Life Cycle: From Post-Entry Restriction To Nuclear Import, Tshaka J. Cunningham
Exploring The Early Events In The Hiv-1 Life Cycle: From Post-Entry Restriction To Nuclear Import, Tshaka J. Cunningham
Student Theses and Dissertations
Early events in the viral replication cycle of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) determine the virus' ability to sustain a persistent infection in susceptible host species. However, many of the molecular machinations through which the virus progresses during its earliest moments in the cell's interior remain enigmatic. Similar to other virus families, HIV virions are packed with a specific assortment of viral and cellular proteins that allow them to carry out their unique program for replication inside of target cells. One such protein that is present in incoming virions, HIV-1 integrase, is an enzyme that facilitates the fusion of the …
The Role Of The Glyoxylate Cycle In The Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ernesto Javier Muñoz Elías
The Role Of The Glyoxylate Cycle In The Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ernesto Javier Muñoz Elías
Student Theses and Dissertations
According to the World Health Organization a third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The unparalleled success of M. tuberculosis as a pathogen reflects the bacterium's extraordinary ability to persist in its host in spite of eliciting a robust immune response. Currently available treatment is inadequate and drug resistance is rapidly spreading. New antibiotics are desperately needed. The substrates and metabolic pathways utilized by pathogens during infection are largely unknown and represent an under-exploited area of investigation. Uniquely, evolution of the genus Mycobacterium has involved extensive duplication of fatty acid metabolism genes, including two homologs encoding prokaryotic- …
We Were Only Teasing: The Eighth Circuit Misses The Quintessence Of Hostile Work Environment Claims Under The Ada, J. Andrew Hirth
We Were Only Teasing: The Eighth Circuit Misses The Quintessence Of Hostile Work Environment Claims Under The Ada, J. Andrew Hirth
Missouri Law Review
Shaver v. Independent Stave Co. holds that a hostile work environment is actionable under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This article examines burden established by the decision for ADA plaintiffs. Leading to the conclusion that it is erroneous because it creates the unintended result of a lesser burden for ADA plaintiffs than for Title VII plaintiffs.
