At The Crossroads Of Title Ix And A New "Idea": Why Bullying Need Not Be "A Normal Part Of Growing Up" For Special Education Children, Paul M. Secunda Jan 2005

At The Crossroads Of Title Ix And A New "Idea": Why Bullying Need Not Be "A Normal Part Of Growing Up" For Special Education Children, Paul M. Secunda

Faculty Publications

In 21st century America, bullying of children by other children at school continues at epidemic levels. Organizations as diverse as the Department of Health and Human Services (through the National Institutes of Health and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)), the National Crime Prevention Council, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, and the National Education Association, have all targeted school bullying and its consequences in various initiatives and campaigns over the last several years. These organizations argue that if schools and parents do not properly intervene to prevent bullying, the long-term ramifications for both the bully and the bullied …

A Public Interest Model For Applying Lost Chance Theory To Probabilistic Injuries In Employment Discrimination Cases, Paul M. Secunda Jan 2005

A Public Interest Model For Applying Lost Chance Theory To Probabilistic Injuries In Employment Discrimination Cases, Paul M. Secunda

Faculty Publications

This article assesses Judge Posner's opinion in Doll v. Brown, suggesting that lost chance theory be applied to probabilistic injuries in competitive hiring and promotion cases involving employment discrimination. I agree with Judge Posner that the lost chance remedial approach, derived from medical malpractice law, has a proper role to play in determining just and equitable remedies in this employment discrimination context. But I argue for a public interest model to appropriately take into account the public interest emphasis of employment discrimination law. I argue that courts should utilize a modified version of lost chance theory to award punitive-like equitable …

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman Jan 2005

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, there is a lack of standardized procedures in Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies in regards to risk assessment for child neglect. Available child neglect assessment measures often lack empirical support or are limited by response bias due to the focus on parental responsibility. This study utilized interviews with CPS employees to obtain descriptions of child neglect situations. A questionnaire was then generated based on the interviews and distributed to additional CPS employees. The questionnaire examined respondents' likelihood to substantiate each item as neglect, the frequency each item occurred and the perceived level of harm for each item across multiple …

Values And Objectivity In Science: The Current Controversy About Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey Jan 2005

Values And Objectivity In Science: The Current Controversy About Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Values and Objectivity in Science illustrates many of the ethical issues that arise concerning scientific practices and applications, offering an account of how social and ethical values play important roles in science. Hugh Lacey develops and clarifies his previous analysis by arguing for the importance of research being conducted under a plurality of strategies, contrasting materialist strategies with agro-ecological strategies. By displaying the structure of current ethical controversies about the legitimacy of planting transgenic crops, this book illustrates that sound thinking on such issues must be grounded on an adequate philosophy of science, one that can clearly distinguish between the …

Letters To Home...Vietnam Soldiers Letters, Diana Garner, Historical Administration

Propaganda, Patriotism, and Protest - Docs

Diana Garner was a student at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana when she began to write to soldiers stationed in Vietnam during 1968-1969. A friend encouraged her to place her name in the Sea Tiger, a magazine published by the military. Diana began receiving letters from the soldiers shortly after placing her address in the magazine. She continued to write to a few of the soldiers for some time but eventually lost contact with all of her soldier pen-pals. The letters mostly focus on the mundane activities in the life of a soldier but occasionally glimpses of the fear …

Dinámica De Seroconversión En Hembras Bovinas Post Eliminación De Animales Portadores Del Virus De La Diarrea Viral Bovina., Jayashi Cesar F., Gavidia Cesar C., Mariluz Araínga, Alberto Manchego, Hermelinda G. Rivera

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

A study was conducted to determine the effect of culling BVDV carrier animals on the seroconversion against BVDV in the new generation of heifers from a dairy herd located in Arequipa, Peru. Blood samples were collected from 6-12 month old females in four sampling periods: January (n = 73), June (n = 48), October 2003 (n = 48), and January 2004 (n = 35) to evaluate their serological against BVDV status and to screen for carrier animals using the virus neutralization and antigen-capture ELISA tests, respectively. The prevalence of BVDV was 80.8 ± 9.0, 56.3 ± 14.0, 50.0 ± 14.2 …

A Further Consideration Of Galdosian Cultural Nicknames: Mythological, Legendary, And Historical Personages, Vernon A. Chamberlin Jan 2005

A Further Consideration Of Galdosian Cultural Nicknames: Mythological, Legendary, And Historical Personages, Vernon A. Chamberlin

Decimonónica

Galdós’s use of nicknames has been addressed both directly and indirectly in various studies,1 but much remains to be noted about how historical, legendary, and mythological personages served as source material for sobriquets to designate Galdosian characters. So important were these nicknames to Galdós’s artistry that he would sometimes change the apodo in the Alpha manuscript to a different one in the final printed version. Moreover, the history-based nicknames, which do so much to enliven Galdós’s novels and Episodios are a feature in common with other nineteenth-century novelists, most notably Alas, Pereda, and Pardo Bazán.

Autonomy And The Other: Andalusian Regionalism And Seville's Cigarrera, Nirmala Singh-Brinkman Jan 2005

Autonomy And The Other: Andalusian Regionalism And Seville's Cigarrera, Nirmala Singh-Brinkman

Decimonónica

In 1898 the Spanish Empire experienced the final stage of its collapse when it lost the last of its colonies: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. A crisis within the Spanish nation ensued, prompting peripheral regions of the Iberian Peninsula to campaign actively for autonomy. Regionalist activists from Galicia, Valencia, the Basque provinces, Catalonia, and Andalusia interpreted the end of Spanish imperialism as Madrid's failure to let an empire of regional differences thrive—be they Cuban or Catalan. They considered that if Cuba could be “liberated” from Madrid's centralized rule, then Catalonia, for example, should also be granted independence (González Antón …

Rusiñol’S Modernist Jottings Along Life’S Way And García Lorca’S Impresiones Y Paisajes, Nelson Orringer

Decimonónica

García Lorca’s earliest writings (1917–18) reveal his initial identification with Hispanic modernism, which first came into being in Catalonia.1 Catalan modernistes had introduced the word “modernist” in its contemporary acceptation into the languages of the Iberian Peninsula. L’Avenç, a Barcelonese journal and publishing house, first employed the adjective modernista in the sense of an attitude of approval towards innovation in all spheres of culture. One leader of L’Avenç, the Barcelonese essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, and painter Santiago Rusiñol y Prats (1861–1931), achieved popularity in Catalonia for his poetic essays on travel, on life in general viewed as …

Breaking The Chain Of Violence In Israel And Palestine: Suicide Bombings And Targeted Killings Under International Humanitarian Law, Demian Casey Jan 2005

Breaking The Chain Of Violence In Israel And Palestine: Suicide Bombings And Targeted Killings Under International Humanitarian Law, Demian Casey

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

This note examines the legal justifications for these acts under international humanitarian law, in order to determine whether the law is sufficient to break the chain of suicide bombings and retaliatory assassinations in Israel and Palestine. The legal status of the suicide bombing of Egged Bus 32A and the retaliatory assassination of Shehadeh are examined as typical instances of violence that have marked the al-Aqsa Intifada. The attacks are analyzed to determine how the law should be applied to prevent this violence. Part I provides background information on the suicide bombing and retaliatory assassination. Part II discusses international humanitarian law …

Factors Affecting Clergy-Psychologist Referral Patterns, Mark R. Mcminn, Steven J. Runner, Jennifer A. Fairchild, Joshua D. Lefler, Rachel P. Suntay

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Recent research on clergy-psychologist collaboration has resulted in helpful principles for clergy and psychologists working together, but very little is known about what specific characteristics in clergy are appealing to psychologists and vice versa. Two experimental survey studies are reported, both exploring characteristics that enhance or hinder collaboration. In Study 1, Southern Baptist pastors rated the likelihood of referring to a counselor who was identified as either a Biblical Counselor or a Christian Psychologist, and was identified as either being excellent in interpersonal skills or as using scripture and prayer in counseling. Pastors demonstrated a preference for counselors using scripture …

Reducing Playground Bullying And Supporting Beliefs: An Experimental Trial Of The 'Steps To Respect' Program, Karin S. Frey, Miriam K. Hirschstein, Jennie L. Snell, Leihua Van Schoiack Edstrom, Elizabeth P. Mackenzie, Carole J. Broderick

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Six schools were randomly assigned to a multilevel bullying intervention or a control condition. Children in Grades 3–6 (N = 1,023) completed pre- and posttest surveys of behaviors and beliefs and were rated by teachers. Observers coded playground behavior of a random subsample (n = 544). Hierarchical analyses of changes in playground behavior revealed declines in bullying and argumentative behavior among intervention-group children relative to control-group children, increases in agreeable interactions, and a trend toward reduced destructive bystander behavior. Those in the intervention group reported enhanced bystander responsibility, greater perceived adult responsiveness, and less acceptance of bullying/aggression than those in …
