Effect Of Increasing Dietary Crude Protein Concentration On Growth Performance And Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I Concentration In Barrows And Gilts, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller Jan 2005

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Crude Protein Concentration On Growth Performance And Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I Concentration In Barrows And Gilts, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of increasing dietary protein intake on growth performance, carcass composition and serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentration in growing-finishing barrows and gilts. Seventy crossbred pigs (35 barrows and 35 gilts) with an initial body weight of 75.1 lb were used in a 26-day growth study. The pigs were allocated randomly to one of four dietary treatments. The diets were standard corn soybean meal diets, which were formulated to contain 10, 14, 18, or 22% crude protein by changing the ratio of corn to soybean meal in the diet. At the termination of …

Teeth Clipping — Have You Tried To Quit?, Duane Reese, Barbara E. Straw

Nebraska Swine Reports

Results from several experiments were reviewed to collect information on the value of piglet “needle-teeth” clipping. The incidence of facial and udder lesions generally is increased when teeth are left intact. However, there is no evidence that these lesions affect piglet mortality or weaning weight. Thus, based on the conditions of these experiments, there is no strong justification for teeth clipping. Many producers have abandoned teeth clipping. Besides saving labor, they report having fewer poor doing piglets and joint infections that can result from teeth clipping. Some producers have tried to stop clipping, but because of greasy pig disease problems …

Symposium Paper: Economic And Tax Implications For Managing Beef Replacement Heifers, R. T. Clark, K. W. Creighton, H. H. Patterson, T. N. Barrett Jan 2005

Symposium Paper: Economic And Tax Implications For Managing Beef Replacement Heifers, R. T. Clark, K. W. Creighton, H. H. Patterson, T. N. Barrett

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Sustainable cowherds require replacement of cull cows either internally via raised heifers or externally with purchased females. Managing raised replacements begins with a weaned heifer calf and continues on through her second pregnancy and calving. Replacement costs were estimated from research conducted in Nebraska for spring-calving cowherds and included the opportunity cost of the heifer calf. The analysis, based on research data, showed that heifer development programs targeted to 50 to 55% of mature BW (MBW) at first breeding can be successful, challenging the traditional target of 65% of MBW at first breeding. The lower BW programs achieved …

Judicial Reform In Afghanistan: A Case Study In The New Criminal Procedure Code, Faiz Ahmed

UC Law SF International Law Review

On January 4, 2004, the Islamic Transitional State of Afghanistan ratified a constitution. While lauded by many, a number of its articles have stirred debate within Afghanistan. Using the country's new criminal procedure code as a case study, the author addresses key questions pertaining to legal reform and development movements, including the foreign imposition of law, a lack of local participation in legal reform processes, and a blindness to the multiple layers of indigenous law practiced on the ground. The author concludes that these are all weaknesses that will fundamentally hamper the rebuilding of stable legal institutions in Afghanistan in …

Improving Root Health And Yield Of Dry Beans In The Nebraska Panhandle With A New Technique For Reducing Soil Compaction, Robert M. Harveson, John A. Smith, Walter W. Stroup

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

A field study conducted during the 2001 and 2002 growing seasons investigated the integration of fungicide applications and tillage methods for reducing root health problems in dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants by alleviating soil compaction and its potential exacerbation of root disease. Several cultural practices were combined with applications of the strobilurin fungicide azoxystrobin. Soil compaction was created artificially throughout the entire plot area. Six treatments, consisting of four tillage treatments and two combinations of tillage or applications of azoxystrobin, were tested to alleviate the compaction and enhance root health. Tillage treatments included a compacted control with no …

Preconditioning Of Primary Human Endothelial Cells With Inflammatory Mediators Alters The “Set Point” Of The Cell, Youichiro Wada, Hasan H. Otu, Shengqian Wu, Md. Ruhul Abid, Hitomi Okada, Towia Libermann, Tatsuhiko Kodama, Shu-Ching Shih, Takashi Minami, William C. Aird Jan 2005

Preconditioning Of Primary Human Endothelial Cells With Inflammatory Mediators Alters The “Set Point” Of The Cell, Youichiro Wada, Hasan H. Otu, Shengqian Wu, Md. Ruhul Abid, Hitomi Okada, Towia Libermann, Tatsuhiko Kodama, Shu-Ching Shih, Takashi Minami, William C. Aird

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Endothelial cells are highly sensitive to changes in the extracellular milieu. Sepsis results in activation of inflammatory and coagulation pathways. We hypothesized that sepsis-associated mediators may alter the response capacity (so-called “set point”) of endothelial cells. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were preincubated in the presence or absence of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), hypoxia, hyperthermia, and/or high glucose; treated with or without thrombin for 4 h; and then processed for RNase protection assays of selected activation markers. Priming with TNF-α and LPS significantly inhibited thrombin-mediated induction of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, tissue factor, and …

Taking An Endemically Infected Bovine Tb Area Through To Livestock Clearance. A Case Study Of West Taupo, New Zealand, Kevin Nicholas Jan 2005

Taking An Endemically Infected Bovine Tb Area Through To Livestock Clearance. A Case Study Of West Taupo, New Zealand, Kevin Nicholas

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The Pest Management Strategy for Bovine Tuberculosis (Tb) in New Zealand aims to achieve efficient freedom from Tb by 2013 and to eradicate the disease from livestock and wildlife. The West Taupo area, in the central North Island of New Zealand, was chronically infected with Tb in both domestic livestock herds (cattle and deer) and within wildlife populations (brushtail possum, ferret, feral deer and pigs). Through the development and implementation of a technically innovative management plan, this area is now approaching Tb free status. The case study / management plan reported here discusses the operational techniques and strategies that were …

Assessment Of Texas Medical Providers Concerning Rabies Vaccines, Denise Ruffino, Scott Henke Jan 2005

Assessment Of Texas Medical Providers Concerning Rabies Vaccines, Denise Ruffino, Scott Henke

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Rabies is an important zoonotic disease in Texas and thousands of people each year either request or require rabies prophylaxis because they have ‘high risk’ jobs or are exposed to the disease. After experiencing difficulty in receiving rabies prophylaxis from physicians, we conducted a survey of Texas medical providers to assess their knowledge of rabies vaccine procedures and their experience with rabies vaccines. Most providers in Texas (>95% of 297) rarely saw patients for rabies prophylaxis; therefore, providers have minimal, if any, experience with the procedures of acquiring and administering the vaccine. Providers varied greatly in their responses to …

Disseminating Usability Design Knowledge Through Ontology-Based Pattern Languages, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar Jan 2005

Disseminating Usability Design Knowledge Through Ontology-Based Pattern Languages, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Usability patterns represent knowledge about known ways to design graphical user interfaces that are usable and meet the needs and expectations of users. There is currently a plethora of usability patterns published in books, private repositories and the World-Wide Web. The dominance of pattern discovery efforts has neglected the emerging need to organize the patterns so they can become a proactive resource for developing interfaces. This paper presents an approach using Semantic Web concepts that turns informal patterns into formal representations capable of supporting systematic design methods. Through this method, loosely coupled pattern collections can be turned into strongly coupled …
