Stress And Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Christopher B. Rosnick Aug 2005

Stress And Cognitive Performance In Older Adults, Christopher B. Rosnick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current dissertation sought to examine stress in three different, but overlapping, ways. The first study examined how self-reported negative life events, in the aggregate and individually, are associated with cognitive performance. The results suggested that there was no significant relationship between the aggregate measures of self-reported negative life events and cognitive performance. On the other hand, several individual negative life events were associated with cognitive functioning. The findings support previous research indicating that using estimates of individual stressors rather than aggregate measures of stressors increases the predictive validity of stress measurement.

The second study assessed the cross-sectional and longitudinal …

“See Your Healthcare Provider For A Prescription Today!” The Influence Of Direct-To-Consumer Drug Advertising On Nurse Practitioners And Their Patients, Kelly A. Getman-Dissette Aug 2005

“See Your Healthcare Provider For A Prescription Today!” The Influence Of Direct-To-Consumer Drug Advertising On Nurse Practitioners And Their Patients, Kelly A. Getman-Dissette

Masters Theses

In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration relaxed the guidelines regarding the advertising of prescription drugs directly to consumers (i.e., direct-to-consumer advertising, DTCA). The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of DTCA on the relationships of healthcare providers with their patients. In order to accomplish this task, in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with ten nurse practitioners (NPs). The interviews sought out provider perceptions on four topics as they relate to DTCA: diagnosis and treatment decisions, prescribing practices, additional burden on the provider, and patient trust in the provider. The findings reveal that DTCA has had both …

Awareness Of Advance Planning For End Of Life: A Qualitative Study Of 'Baby Boomers', Elizabeth Lada Morse Aug 2005

Awareness Of Advance Planning For End Of Life: A Qualitative Study Of 'Baby Boomers', Elizabeth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

This qualitative study examined factors that contribute to end of life decision-making regarding formulation of advance directives for individuals within the 'baby boomer' age range. Using a grounded theory methodology a substantive theory of awareness of end of life identifies four contexts under which advance directives are formulated and implemented. The L-A-M-P awareness model was identified through a series of interviews with fifteen individuals, who are considered generally well, and not anticipating imminent incapacity or death. My findings indicate that one's prior personal experiences with death and dying are unique and these experiences may influence formulation of their own advance …

The Effects Of Contextual Factors On Dyadic Everyday Problem Solving In Adulthood, Tara L. Neely Aug 2005

The Effects Of Contextual Factors On Dyadic Everyday Problem Solving In Adulthood, Tara L. Neely

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined individual and dyadic everyday problem solving in 45 younger, middle-aged, and older adult married couples. The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of age, gender, collaboration, marital characteristics, and basic cognition on everyday problem-solving. Two research questions were addressed. First, were there group differences across three phases of problem solving? Second, what was the frequency of individual change, and which factors predicted improvement, stability, or decline? When addressing the first question, there was a significant four-way interaction, F (4, 78) = 2.83, p < .05, eta = .12, between participant age, gender, problem-solving condition, and problem-solving phase, emphasizing the multidimensionality of everyday cognition. When addressing the second question, a larger percentage of individuals who collaborated reliably improved compared to individuals who worked alone. Furthermore, basic cognitive abilities, education, and marital factors significantly accounted for individual reliable change in everyday problem solving.

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt Aug 2005

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Research suggests that families have development histories which influence their responses to situations across the life course. The present study examined the effects of family relationship histories on intergenerational affection and conflict between adult children and their parents and how this affects parents’ depressive symptoms. Path analysis based on matched reports of adult children and their parents revealed that parental behavior early in life affects contemporary relationships between family members, which ultimately impacts parents’ depressive symptoms. Parental rejection is negatively associated with intergenerational affection, which in turn is negatively associated with depressive symptoms.

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi Jul 2005

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rowe and Kahns theory of successful aging identifies three main components of aging successfully: reducing the risk of disease and disability, maintaining high cognitive and physical function, and engagement with life. While there is compelling evidence that suggests the legitimacy of this concept in the 50-75 year old community dwelling population, three areas of expansion are necessary: 1.) programmatic research; 2.) extending the existing research samples to include older samples and those living in continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs); and 3.) the integration of data collection and analysis to move beyond investigation of just one successful aging outcome to include …

Asset-Building Programs For People With Disabilities In Rural Areas: Including Independent Living And Long-Term Care Planning Education, Michelle Putnam, Fengyan Tang

Center for Social Development Research

This paper presents findings from a case study of individuals with multiple sclerosis examining their planning and preparation activities for their future independent living and long-term care needs. Data collected from a representative sample of National Multiple Sclerosis Society members in the greater metropolitan St. Louis and eastern Illinois area indicate significant differences in income, assets, education, health and functional limitation status between individuals living in rural versus urban areas. Additionally, findings show respondents with greater levels of education and assets, and those living in urban areas, are more likely to have saved for retirement, made legal preparations, or engaged …

Reasons For Working And Their Relationship To Retirement Attitudes, Job Satisfaction And Occupational Self-Efficacy Of Bridge Employees, Veronica M. Dendinger, Gary A. Adams, Jamie D. Jacobson Jul 2005

Reasons For Working And Their Relationship To Retirement Attitudes, Job Satisfaction And Occupational Self-Efficacy Of Bridge Employees, Veronica M. Dendinger, Gary A. Adams, Jamie D. Jacobson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Although the Baby Boomers are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population and they are quickly approaching retirement age, research has widely neglected to look at the reasons as to why many of them intend on opting for bridge employment as opposed to completely retiring. This study examined the relationships among four reasons for working (social, personal, financial, and generative) and three attitudinal responses to bridge employment (job satisfaction, retirement attitudes, and occupational self-efficacy). In a sample of 108 recent retirees holding bridge employment positions, it was found that generativity served as a reliable predictor of job satisfaction and …

Student And Agency Personnel Perceptions Of The Impact Of Community Service-Learning, Laura E. Schulte, Jarene Fluckiger, Sandra Squires Jul 2005

Student And Agency Personnel Perceptions Of The Impact Of Community Service-Learning, Laura E. Schulte, Jarene Fluckiger, Sandra Squires

Essays in Education

The purpose of this study was to investigate student and agency personnel perceptions of the impact of community service-learning across several different courses at a Midwestern metropolitan university. Eighty-five students and 18 community agency personnel completed the Service-Learning Index. The results of the study indicated that student and agency personnel perceptions of the impact of community service-learning were positive and similar and did not vary across academic disciplines. Perspectives about the service-learning course received the highest ratings from both students and community agency personnel. Recommendations were made to expand the community service-learning program at the university where the study took …

All The World's A Coffee Shop: Reflections On Place, Community And Identity, Anthony M. Orum Jul 2005

All The World's A Coffee Shop: Reflections On Place, Community And Identity, Anthony M. Orum

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay uses a personal experience, the routine of daily activity at my local coffee shop, to illustrate the importance of places to the nature of human experience. Every day, I argue, the conversations and interactions that take place at the White Hen store nearby my house serve to reaffirm a number of important features of my life: (1) a sense of my own identity; (2) a sense of a larger community of people outside my family and close friends; (3) a sense of civility, of small kindnesses and courtesies among people who, on the face of it, seem very …
