Advances In Graduate Nursing Education: Beyond The Advanced Practice Nurse, Sharon Radzyminski Apr 2005

Advances In Graduate Nursing Education: Beyond The Advanced Practice Nurse, Sharon Radzyminski

Nursing Faculty Publications

Historically, graduate education in nursing has been primarily concerned with the clinical role. In recent years it has been suggested that graduate education needs to consider alternate programs of study that prepare nurses for clinical leadership that are distinct from management and advanced practice roles. Graduate education is needed that focuses on the skills required to coordinate care and implement outcome-based practice and quality improvement strategies. Two models are currently being proposed that meet these objectives. The first is the population health nurse expert that functions on the macrosystems approach and the second is the clinical nurse leader which is …

Black Women Of Today: Oral History Project, George Junne

Africana Studies Faculty Publications

A Class Project Conducted by the Students of AFS 102 "The Black Woman in America."

From the introduction: During spring semester 2005, I taught AFS 102, "The Black Woman in America." While developing the syllabus I decided to present an assignment that would incorporate the class material but also would be more than a paper that would be read and returned. Therefore, I decided that each student would have to interview a Black woman—African American or mixed-race—and submit that work for limited distribution in a compilation.

Act Now For Your Tomorrow: Final Report Of The National Commission On Nursing Workforce For Long-Term Care, Edward Howard, Brian Biles, Robyn Stone, Paul Wing, Kristin Mccloskey, Tim M. Henderson Apr 2005

Act Now For Your Tomorrow: Final Report Of The National Commission On Nursing Workforce For Long-Term Care, Edward Howard, Brian Biles, Robyn Stone, Paul Wing, Kristin Mccloskey, Tim M. Henderson

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The nursing workforce shortage faced by long-term care providers stems from factors both outside and inside the organization and operation of long-term care services. The nursing shortage diminishes quality of care and increases the costs of providing services. Resolution of the long-term care nursing workforce challenge will require improvement of the recruitment and retention of nurses. The leadership for the efforts to improve the long-term care workforce must come from the community itself. New and sustained leadership for action by long-term care leaders is the critical factor necessary to the development of the recommended initiatives and the achievement of the …

Residential Adjustments Of Elders: Perspectives Of Elders And Their Adult Children, Alison S. Gottlieb, Elizabeth Johns, Francis G. Caro Apr 2005

Residential Adjustments Of Elders: Perspectives Of Elders And Their Adult Children, Alison S. Gottlieb, Elizabeth Johns, Francis G. Caro

Gerontology Institute Publications

While elders tend to prefer to “age in place,” they often have reason to consider residential alternatives. Declining health and loss of social supports invite elders to consider modifying their homes or moving to other settings that are less demanding and more supportive. Residential adjustments of elders are often a family issue. Among middle-aged adults, worry about the safety of aging parents in their residential environments is widespread. Also common is frustration among adult children about their difficulties in persuading parents to make recommended residential adjustments.

We conducted a qualitative study on residential decision-making based on focus groups and qualitative …

Promoting Safe Mobility Among Elders By Increasing Awareness Of Vehicle Modifications (Executive Summary), Elizabeth Van Ranst, Nina M. Silverstein, Alison S. Gottlieb Apr 2005

Promoting Safe Mobility Among Elders By Increasing Awareness Of Vehicle Modifications (Executive Summary), Elizabeth Van Ranst, Nina M. Silverstein, Alison S. Gottlieb

Gerontology Institute Publications

This research project looks at one strategy to address the safety of older drivers, vehicular modifications. Specifically, a video demonstrating low-tech, low-cost features that may alleviate some driving challenges was produced to determine whether viewing the video would increase awareness of and motivation to use those features. Prochaska and DiClemente’s Transtheoretical Model of intentional behavioral change provides the theoretical framework for this study. This model posits five stages of change, a continuum over which the individual becomes more receptive to taking action.

Motivation For Active Aging: Results Of A Pilot Study, Francis G. Caro, Laney Bruner-Canhoto, Jeffery Burr, Jan Mutchler Apr 2005

Motivation For Active Aging: Results Of A Pilot Study, Francis G. Caro, Laney Bruner-Canhoto, Jeffery Burr, Jan Mutchler

Gerontology Institute Publications

The current research explores the question whether activity on the part of older people can be explained, in part, by a general motivation to be active that cuts across various forms of activity. One premise is that motivation defined as “personal interest or desire” is one of a number of forces that contributes to participation in an activity. A further premise is that a distinction may be made between motivation that is specific to a particular activity and general motivation to be active. A general motive to be active may help to explain specific forms of activity. Further, a general …

Helicobacter Pylori. Basics And Clinical Overview, Mohammed S. Al-Marhoon, Roger W. Soames

Saudi Medical Journal

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori H. pylori has greatly changed the approach to the management of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Gastric carcinoma is estimated to be the world9s second most common cancer as a cause of death. It is hoped that gastric cancer can be prevented by H. pylori eradication; however, this issue is still under investigation. Active research is ongoing to highlight the mechanisms by which H. pylori leads to severe gastric …
