Glbtq Characterization In Young Adult Novels, 1998-2004, Debra I. Lecates

Theses and Dissertations

Since the first young adult (YA) novel with gay content appeared in 1969, the number of gay-themed novels available for teens has increased significantly. However, research has shown that the long-awaited movement away from stereotyped characters and conservative storylines and into more realistic portrayals has been slow in materializing. This study utilized a content analysis of 22 YA novels with homosexual content to investigate whether changes have occurred in the portrayal of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) characters and themes between earlier studies and 1998-2004. A total of 26 characterization and plot elements in each novel were analyzed …

A Comparative Study Of The Perceptions Of Elementary School Administrators, Teachers, And Students Regarding Recess And Free Play In The Public School., Amy Bennett Banner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to recent studies, the number of schools that have severely limited or eliminated recess and free-play opportunities is on the rise across the nation. School officials cite the increasing levels of state and federal pressure to perform on standardized tests as the primary reason for this shift away from the playground. The threat of lawsuits and safety concerns are also listed as factors in this change of policy.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the perceptions of directors of schools, supervisors, principals, assistant principals, teachers, and students regarding recess and free play in three East …

The Use Of Geospatial Technologies To Examine Spatial And Temporal Changes Of Aquaculture Complexes In The Delta Region Of Mississippi, 1984 To 2001, John Storelli

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis used geographic information systems and remote sensing to measure expansion of aquaculture Northwest Mississippi. A feature extraction technique was used to identify aquaculture from satellite imagery. Variations in well water depth were examined in relation to the changes in aquaculture to explore its affects on the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVA) aquifer. A soil moisture index was used to investigate preferential expansion of aquaculture onto soil moisture types. This study found that aquaculture expanded from 66,000 acres in 1984 to 142,000 acres in 2001. Total acreage of individual counties from the Feature Extraction is higher than estimates …

Achievement Data For K-12 Schools, Lennie Symes

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

With the advent of No Child Left Behind legislation, K-12 schools are required to demonstrate a certain percentage of students can reach levels of proficiency, called Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). In South Dakota, the Dakota STEP test is administered in the spring to determine these levels of proficiency. Schools receive feedback from the state on certain aspects of proficiency, but many important pieces are missing for schools to develop effective strategies and to make good decisions.

This project utilizes "raw" Dakota STEP data to focus on 3 basic problems concerning achievement data: 1) provide better tools to help schools improve …

Participants' responses were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to examine whether there was a statistically significant difference between the responses of the two groups. There were significant findings in nine out of twenty-four subscales of the PMI. The results from these areas show that the social workers feel more insecure about …

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely May 2005

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely

Geography Honors Projects

In this study, I examine the agricultural geography of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the history of organic farming. I discuss economic and social factors in the spatial distribution of organic farming. Through field work, mapping, statistical analysis, and farmer surveys, I determined that organic farms cluster in southwestern Wisconsin and central Minnesota. Southwestern Wisconsin's hills limit row cropping, making the land available for organics (especially dairy operations.) The local CROPP cooperative is also a stron support. Finally, most organic farmers farm conventionally before switching to organic. Since they tend not to move, the change rarely affects location.
