From Sociability To Spectacle: Interracial Sexuality And The Ideological Uses Of Space In New York City, 1900-1930, Elizabeth Clement

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper addresses inter-racial sociability and sexuality in New York City before and after the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural South to northern US cities. Using space and the arrangements of objects in space as my primary evidence, I argue that spatial relations both reflected and created race relations in the urban North and that these practices shifted dramatically over the course of a twenty-year period. While the black proprietors of clubs in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1910s used space to make transgressive interracial sociability possible, by the 1920s, the white-owned clubs of the Harlem Renaissance did the …

On Assigning Place Names To Geography Related Web Pages, Wenbo Zong, Dan Wu, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we attempt to give spatial semantics to web pages by assigning them place names. The entire assignment task is divided into three sub-problems, namely place name extraction, place name disambiguation and place name assignment. We propose our approaches to address these sub-problems. In particular, we have modified GATE, a well-known named entity extraction software, to perform place name extraction using a US Census gazetteer. A rule-based place name disambiguation method and a place name assignment method capable of assigning place names to web page segments have also been proposed. We have evaluated our proposed disambiguation and assignment …

Energy Balanced Broadcasting Through Delayed Intelligence, Michael R. Gosnell, Ryan Arbarelli, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ad hoc wireless networks are growing in popularity and usefulness, however they rely on broadcasting as a fundamental process for routing. Improvements to broadcasting have made ad hoc networks more feasible, but sometimes benefit only specific situations. Delayed intelligence (DI) is proposed as a new load balancing approach where small delays are introduced to allow distributed responsibility delegation. Preliminary results show delayed intelligence, when applied in existing broadcasting methods such as passive clustering, can be used to improve the energy disparity and therefore extend ad hoc network lifetime.

A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer May 2005

A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Despite millions of dollars being spent on research each year in Canada, little attention is paid to the dissemination of the results of research. There is a disconnect between Canadian public policies in this area; although a high priority is assigned to the generation of research, there is a lack of policies addressing its dissemination. Meanwhile, the environment in which research knowledge is being disseminated is undergoing a profound transformation because of several important drivers. In particular, these drivers include new technology, changing research patterns, new users, economics, and commercialization. The major objective of this study was to examine the …

Energy Objects: Reflection Through Interaction, Mattias Ludvigsson May 2005

Energy Objects: Reflection Through Interaction, Mattias Ludvigsson

Nordes Conference Series

Energy consumption and personal objects both play important roles in young people’s everyday life and influence their behaviour in many different ways, although often unconsciously. This article investigates how interaction design and speculative re-design of personal objects can be used as a means for raising young people’s awareness of energy consumption. The concept of energy objects acts to make energy visible and tangible in order to stimulate reflection and reaction through the interaction with a collection of conceptual design proposals. Initial user feedback indicates that the presented collection of re-designed objects can be seen as an adequate tool in order …

Domestication And Context: Studying Objectification In Print Media, Sara Routarinne May 2005

Domestication And Context: Studying Objectification In Print Media, Sara Routarinne

Nordes Conference Series

This article investigates into the domestication of communication technology through two cultural discourses, for one that of interior magazines and for two that of technology magazines. During domestication process technological items are objectified by ways in which they are brought to a physical environment and in ways in which they rearrange that environment (cf. Silverstone & al. 1992). The study is inspired by the domestication approach (Silverstone & Hirsch 1992, Silverstone 1994), while its methodological background is mainly based on critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 1995). The data consist of 55 magazine articles including 687 images. The findings indicate that the …

Restless Landscapes, Smout Allen, Mark Smout, Laura Allen

Nordes Conference Series

This article discusses the work of the architectural design research and teaching partnership of Smout Allen around the theme of Restless Landscapes. The work proposes that the intrinsic features of the landscape such as topography, geography, climate, and man’s manipulation of rural and urban environments provides the designer with a language that can inform design. Can one exploit the conditions that physically and perceptually shape the landscape to augment architectural design and bring to it a sense of nature and environment illuminated? Two design cases conceived between the realms of architectural and landscape design, architectural competitions and conceptual art illustrate …

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle May 2005

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle

Dissertations and Theses

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a tropical rainforest reserve in the northeastern corner of Honduras, is home to several subsistence-based indigenous groups, including the Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as the non-indigenous Ladinos. Communities within the reserve depend on forest resources, swidden agriculture, marine resources and/or small-scale ranching as the foundations for local economies. Regulations placed on these subsistence practices, after establishment of the biosphere reserve in 1980, have created unique and new pressures and resulted in a blend of traditional and innovative resource use. A notable result is the promotion of ecotourism as a solution for meeting the …

Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater May 2005

Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Modeled hyperspectral reflectance signatures just above the water surface are obtained from radiative transfer models to create synthetic images of targets below the water surface. Images are displayed as 24 bit RGB images of the water surface using selected channels. Example model outputs are presented in this paper for a hyperspectral Monte Carlo and a hyperspectral layered analytical iterative model of radiative transport within turbid shallow water types. Images at the selected wavelengths or channels centered at 490, 530 and 680 nm suggests the two models provide quite similar results when displayed as RGB images. The techniques are demonstrated to …

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag May 2005

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag

Publications

Apart from the discussion about computer-mediated change in community and domestic political affairs, there is a pending debate on general effects of internet- or “net”-based communication on international politics. The reference to international politics rather than international relations is a consciously chosen one – for this paper focuses on net effects on collective decision-making rather than international-society processes. IP/IR driven research on internet-induced political change does not very much link itself to the state of knowledge in internet-and-politics research. Rather, it commonly departs from sub-discipline specific concepts such as neorealist power analysis or post-international turbulence analysis (cf. Allison 2002).

Urban Landscape Change In New Orleans, La: The Case Of The Lost Neighborhood Of Louis Armstrong, Willard Fields May 2005

Urban Landscape Change In New Orleans, La: The Case Of The Lost Neighborhood Of Louis Armstrong, Willard Fields

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While Jane Jacobs' frontal assault on "modern planning" is now over forty years old, communities around the United States are still struggling to deal with the legacy of modernist interventions that dramatically altered the historic urban form and culture of their downtowns. In the worst cases, whole zones were transformed into nearly unusable space. Reintegrating these lost spaces into the urban fabric is one of the most significant challenges of urban planners and designers today. Despite the ubiquity of lost spaces in American cities, comparatively little research has been done on the specific historic urban forms that were altered. This …
