Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite
Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite
Faculty Publications
In 2001, the UK was hit by Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) precipitating one of the biggest crises ever to affect the UK farming system. The crisis unfolded as a series of information and communication problems, from government to farmers and from farmers to farmers, with consequences for action in a time of crisis, social support, and the maintenance of community. What happens to a farming community during such a crisis? When the countryside shuts down, and no one can enter or leave the farm, how can information be disseminated? As methods of dealing with the disease change rapidly, as …

Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Perceptions of student and professor competence and respect were investigated through a survey of 2042 students from 77 liberal arts colleges, both Christian and non-Christian. The Christian schools are part of the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities); CCCU responses were 78.5 percent of the total. Chi- Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine if gender and type of college affected students’ responses. Two conclusions can be made about student competence and value: (1) male CCCU students are most likely to believe that male students are viewed as more competent than female students and (2) non-CCCU students are …

Trends In The Timing Of First Marriage Among Men And Women In The Developing World [Arabic], Barbara Mensch, Susheela Singh, John B. Casterline
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The timing of first union merits investigation not only because of the close temporal link between marriage and the onset of childbearing, but also because the age when men and women marry has implications for the organization of family life and for gender relations within society. This paper begins by reviewing the contributions of various social science disciplines to an understanding of the timing of marriage. Using current status data from 73 countries provided by the United Nations Population Division and retrospective data from 52 Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 1990 and 2001, we then examine recent trends in …

In the spring of 1994, a group of school districts in North Carolina investigated the possibility of a lawsuit challenging the State’s school finance system. In fall 2002, we received a favorable decision from the state supreme court regarding the right to a sound basic education, which was followed by a lengthy trial and a largely favorable decision from the trial court. The State appealed, and the appeal process lasted several months. This article contains the background and high points of the litigation and the July 30, 2004, ruling in the case.

Return To Main Street : An Assessment Of The Main Street Revitalization Program, Lisa Hechesky
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Once the heart of a town’s commercial district, Main Street in the post-World War II era became a ghost town as suburbanization lured consumers and merchants to new shopping complexes in rural areas. From the 1950s to the 1970s, with the aid of federal dollars cities embarked on various urban renewal projects. These revitalization attempts did not help the slumping commercial districts. In many cases, they destroyed historic buildings and left the cleared city blocks empty for decades. The National Main Street Program, created and administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, began in 1980 to address problems faced …

Imagining Europe: Carles Batlle's Combat (Landscape In The Aftermath), Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
At the end of Suite (1999), an award-winning play by Catalan dramatist Carles Batlle i Jordà, there is a memorable scene in which the spectators observe the collapse of a doll house upon the living room floor. It is a metaphor of domestic, as well as global, instability—not to mention, an ironic reference to Ibsen—in which the audience is left to wonder whether the character of Berta, confused and disoriented in the suite of an old hotel, will return to the mirage-like image of bourgeois European domesticity, to a home and marriage without foundations, or whether she will flee to …

Annual Movements Of Pacific Coast Sandhill Cranes, Gary L. Ivey, Caroline P. Herziger, Thomas J. Hoffmann
Annual Movements Of Pacific Coast Sandhill Cranes, Gary L. Ivey, Caroline P. Herziger, Thomas J. Hoffmann
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
The subspecies composition of migratory sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) which stage and winter along the Lower Columbia River in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington is uncertain, but may include all 3 using the Pacific Flyway: lesser (G. c. canadensis), Canadian (G. c. rowani), and greater (G. c. tabida). However, the status of rowani has been debated. During 2001-02, we captured and marked 8 cranes using a noose line trapping technique, and attached Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs) to 6 to ascertain locations of their breeding areas, migration corridors and winter sites. Morphometric data …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
The role of European wild ungulates in the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) is still under discussion. This study describes the geographical distribution and molecular typing of 77 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates belonging either to M. bovis or to M. caprae, cultivated from hunter harvested red deer (Cervus elaphus) and European wild boar (Sus scrofa) in 24 Spanish localities, and compares them with spoligotypes detected previously in humans, livestock or wild animals, as described in the literature. The distribution of the molecular type patterns suggests that the population of M. tuberculosis complex strains isolated from Spanish …

This report provides the basis for discussion and subsequent articulation of a national plan for the Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI). The authors were members of a task force formed from within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that included scientists with expertise in biology, cartography, hydrology, and statistics. The assignment of the task force was to extend work begun by the National Amphibian Leadership Group. This group, composed of senior USGS scientists, managers, and external authorities, met in Gainesville, Florida, in February 20001. The product of this meeting was a document outlining the framework for a national program to …

Basal Tissue Structure In The Earliest Euconodonts: Testing Hypotheses Of Developmental Plasticity In Euconodont Phylogeny, Xi-Ping Dong, Philip C. J. Donoghue, John E. Repetski
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The hypothesis that conodonts are vertebrates rests solely on evidence of soft tissue anatomy. This has been corroborated by microstructural, topological and developmental evidence of homology between conodont and vertebrate hard tissues. However, these conclusions have been reached on the basis of evidence from highly derived euconodont taxa and the degree to which they are representative of plesiomorphic euconodonts remains an open question. Furthermore, the range of variation in tissue types comprising the euconodont basal body has been used to establish a hypothesis of developmental plasticity early in the phylogeny of the clade, and a model of diminishing potentiality in …

Legal Reform And Social Justice: An Introduction To Latcrit Theory, Praxis And Community, Francisco Valdes
Articles
This article provides a general overview of LatCrit theory as a genre of contemporary critical legal scholarship. LatCrit theory self-consciously does not limit itself to law or to scholars: students, activists and other interested parties from various disciplines, backgrounds and regions, help to constitute LatCrit theory as a collective enterprise in every respect. The ties that bind this fluid group together are a shared commitment to antisubordination purpose and praxis. The article begins with a brief account of the jurisprudential context for the emergence of LatCrit theory in 1995, then briefly describes the origins and evolution of this enterprise, before …

‘We’Re Just Like The Irish’: Narratives Of Assimilation, Belonging, And Citizenship Among Arab American Activists, Caroline R. Nagel, Lynn A. Staeheli
Faculty Publications
This paper examines narratives of assimilation and belonging as activists attempt to position Arab-Americans as citizens and full members of the American polity. In interviews with activists, the experience of the Irish as immigrants and citizens was often invoked as the paradigmatic example of how immigrants are incorporated as citizens—an example that activists promoted as one that Arabs would follow. By invoking the Irish experience, activists hope to remind Americans that immigration history is not one of effortless assimilation, but is rather characterized by systematic exclusion and marginalization. In so doing, they articulate narratives of assimilation and belonging that draw …
Leadership Development In Albania: Equipping Young Pastors For Apostolic Leadership, Leigh Rice
Leadership Development In Albania: Equipping Young Pastors For Apostolic Leadership, Leigh Rice
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Albania opened to Christian missions in 1992. The church is new and the pastors are young and with limited experience. Initial rapid growth has been followed by slow decline. Leadership and leadership development is in the hands of foreign missionaries with limited experience in Albania. There is a need to develop culturally-appropriate, apostolic leadership for a country with a predominately Muslim population.
Method
Library research, questionnaires, interviews, and observations were conducted to develop an understanding of the Project Director, the Albanian culture, a theology of leadership and church, and methods in leadership development. An appreciative inquiry approach was used …

A Contextual Analysis Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Norway, With Suggestions For Renewal And Growth, Kjell Aune
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Since 1979, when the membership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norway peaked, the membership has declined. There are underlying, complex reasons. This project seeks the underlying causes for the decline, and suggests possible solutions.
Method
The study begins by establishing a theological basis for ministry. Norwegian society is then analyzed demographically followed by an analysis of the Adventist Church in Norway, that includes a historical and organizational analysis, a review of the database material for the Adventist Church in Norway, and by four questionnaires designed for (1) Active members, (2) Pastors, (3) Former members, and (4) Young non-Adventists …

Is Hindsight 20-20? Reconsidering The Importance Of Pre-Constitutional Documents, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Is Hindsight 20-20? Reconsidering The Importance Of Pre-Constitutional Documents, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Law Faculty Research Publications
Many constitutional orders, including the United States, have yet to determine the legal and political status of pre-constitutional documents written prior to the enactment of a final constitution. This article argues that pre constitutional documents should be critically analyzed by their respective constitutional communities. It maintains that pre-constitutional documents play a key role in constitutional orders by identifying conflicts that remain over time and contends that critical analysis of these documents facilitates deeper understandings of constitutional politics. It demonstrates how pre constitutional documents can be used as diagnostic tools for identifying and better understanding persistent constitutional tensions through a case …

The purpose of this research study was to work with parents who used two different reading interventions at home and find out which parent intervention was more effective in improving their children's oral reading accuracy levels. The total sample size was the parents of 34 elementary at-risk reading students who were taking part in a summer reading and writing program at a state university. Approximately 15 to 20 parents were randomly assigned to both the experimental and main control groups. The main design of this study was an experimental design of parents who were selected randomly by grade level to …
