Differential Immersion Survival By Populations Of Cicindela Hirticollis (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae, Mathew Louis Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Kerri Farnsworth Skinner, Charles Barry Kinsley Nov 2005

Differential Immersion Survival By Populations Of Cicindela Hirticollis (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae, Mathew Louis Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Kerri Farnsworth Skinner, Charles Barry Kinsley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

In the past 20 yr, populations of Cicindela hirticollis Say (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) that inhabit river shorelines have declined dramatically. These habitats have routinely flooded in winter and spring historically, but they have been altered by damming and controlled water releases for irrigation and power generation. We tested the ability of C. hirticollis larvae from two river and one bayshore population to survive immersion in severely hypoxic water. This is the first report of population-level differences among insects in immersion survival and likely relates to exposure to different flooding regimes. The larvae from the Chesapeake Bay population survived ≈3 d of …

Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes Nov 2005

Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

One bioassessment tool available to resource managers to indicate NPS impairment of wadeable streams and rivers are multi-metric invertebrate indices. Such indices are assembled from metrics in broad categories that represent different aspects of community structure and function (e.g. richness, composition, tolerance/intolerance, feeding group, and habit). Indices must incorporate suites of metrics that are ecologically relevant, quantifiable, non-redundant, and that best individually discriminate between reference sites and impaired sites. More than 240 wadeable streams in Georgia were sampled during the September thru February index period using RBP protocols during three successive sample seasons (1999-2003). Ecoregional reference (minimally impaired) sites, as …

The Measurement Of Implicit Motives In Three Cultures: Power And Affiliation In Cameroon, Costa Rica, And Germany, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis, Wolfgang Friedlmeier, Holger Busch, Domingo Campos Nov 2005

The Measurement Of Implicit Motives In Three Cultures: Power And Affiliation In Cameroon, Costa Rica, And Germany, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis, Wolfgang Friedlmeier, Holger Busch, Domingo Campos

Peer Reviewed Articles

This article examines methodological issues related to the measurement of implicit motives in culturally divergent samples. Implicit motives are seen as basic needs shared by all human beings. However, cross-cultural comparisons are very restricted because many cross-cultural studies on implicit motives with non- Western cultures developed and discussed culture-inherent stimuli. The aim of the study here was to search for a culture-independent set of picture stimuli measuring two basic motives (affiliation and power motive) in three different cultures. Two pretests and one main study were carried out in Cameroon, Costa Rica, and Germany with student and non-student samples, respectively, and …

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt Nov 2005

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In the late 1990s widespread evidence of glacier expansion was found in the central Karakoram, in contrast to a worldwide decline of mountain glaciers. The expansions were almost exclusively in glacier basins from the highest parts of the range and developed quickly after decades of decline. Exceptional numbers of glacier surges were also reported. Unfortunately, there has been no on-going measurement of climatic or glaciological variables at these elevations. The present article examines possible explanations for this seemingly anomalous behavior, using evidence from short-term monitoring programs, low-altitude weather stations, and the distinctive environmental characteristics of the region. The latter involve …

Brave New School: A Constitutional Argument Against State-Mandated Mental Health Assessments In Public Schools, Jennifer H. Gelman Nov 2005

Brave New School: A Constitutional Argument Against State-Mandated Mental Health Assessments In Public Schools, Jennifer H. Gelman

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the constitutionality of emotional health assessments in public schools. Despite the Supreme Court's recognition nearly a century ago that parents have a right to control the education of their children, American courts have grown increasingly hostile to parental interests in conflicts between parent and school. The author explores the possibility that the Court's reaffirmation of parental rights in Troxel v. Granville (2003) could be invoked in certain cases to reverse that trend. It is argued, in particular, that parental objections to school involvement in emotional health determinations ought to merit some form of heightened scrutiny.

Theology Of Brotherly Love, Robert L. Marshall Jr. Nov 2005

Theology Of Brotherly Love, Robert L. Marshall Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

Is it possible to have an adverse experience with Christianity and emerge being empowered by a new understanding of the gospel? Howard Thurman seems to answer that question in the affirmative. Thurman analyzes comments from Mahatma Gandhi and a barrister from "India" about Christianity under the light of the gospel. This encounter was important. It was the Genesis of Thurman's theology of brotherly love. This paper is an historical analysis of Howard Thurman's struggle to resolve the conflict between the perception that Christianity is a white man's religion and the gospel of Jesus and the disinherited. The writer will discuss …

Things Which Had Grown Are Being Made New: The Revitalization Of Missional Intent In The Diocese Of Oregon, George Thomson Hemingway Nov 2005

Things Which Had Grown Are Being Made New: The Revitalization Of Missional Intent In The Diocese Of Oregon, George Thomson Hemingway

Doctor of Ministry

The problem addressed in this paper is to find out if the application of missional principles in the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon can revitalize this diocese, direct the diocese to missional ends, and provide applications for similar situations in other dioceses. This investigation assumes that the existing infrastructure of the diocese has intrinsic value for mission if it can become focused on God's mission as its primary end. This approach assumes that the diocese has been and perhaps still is distracted by matters of secondary importance such as maintenance of existing facilities, issues of power, lack of trust, and cultural …

From Telematics To Web-Based: The Progression Of Distance Education In Newfoundland And Labrador, Michael K. Barbour Nov 2005

From Telematics To Web-Based: The Progression Of Distance Education In Newfoundland And Labrador, Michael K. Barbour

Education Faculty Publications

Introduction: The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is located on the east coast of Canada. The province, which has both an island and mainland portions with a total area of 505 066 square kilometres, has a population of approximately 550 000 people. With about 60% of the population living within a 150-kilometre radius of the capital region, the remainder of the province is sparsely populated. The majority of the roughly 300 schools are located in these rural communities. Approximately one-third of which have been determined as necessarily existent (ie, when a school is located so far from another school that …

Globalisation And Urban Crime: Mean Streets Or Lost Suburbs, Mark Findlay Nov 2005

Globalisation And Urban Crime: Mean Streets Or Lost Suburbs, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This parer introduces notions of contemporary globalisation and the manner in which crime and glotalisation interrelate. In particular, the importance of analysing crime and control at both local and global levels is emphasised. Issues of crime and space are addressed in the context of urbanisation. The tendencies of the city to marginalise, and the consequential criminal outcomes from this environment of modernisation (and the modem city) are discussed. Urban planning has had a crucial part to play in humanising and at the same time distinguishing the global push towards urbanisation, and crime prevention is now a recognised feature of globalised …

Changing Perceptions Of Knowledge : Evaluation Of An Innovative Program For Pre-Service Secondary Teachers., Neil Hooley, Rod Moore Nov 2005

Changing Perceptions Of Knowledge : Evaluation Of An Innovative Program For Pre-Service Secondary Teachers., Neil Hooley, Rod Moore

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Pre-service programs for secondary teachers have traditionally involved method subjects, where participants are inducted into the curriculum practices of two disciplinary or subject areas. In 2003, Victoria University of Technology, Melbourne, enrolled a small group of fourteen pre-service teachers into an innovative Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education that directly challenged these program assumptions. Method subjects were collapsed into an integrated study of the theory, skills and practices of classroom work and connections were drawn between all enrolled subjects or knowledge. Another key feature of the program involved all pre-service teachers being placed at the one school for their partnership experience, …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo Nov 2005

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We present a spatial map of the Italian House of Deputies during the XIII Legislature obtained by applying the Poole and Rosenthal methodology to roll call data. We estimate coordinates for almost all the 650 Deputies that were on the House’s floor at the time, and we aggregate them according to parties. We find that voting patters generate basically a two dimensional political space. The first dimension represents loyalty to either the ruling coalition or the opposing one. The second dimension is represented by the European Union. These findings are consistent with the exceptional case of the party Northern League, …

Foreword, Leslie A. Robinson Nov 2005

Foreword, Leslie A. Robinson

San Diego International Law Journal

The articles appearing in Volume 7 of San Diego International Law Journal span the globe and cover the breadth of international law. The concept of globalization offers a prism through which to view the articles in this issue. The first three articles are focused on Africa. Nsongurua Udombana eloquently addresses the need for both debt relief and the full integration of Africa into the global trading system. Karol Boudreaux analyzes the conflict over land rights in Nigeria's Plateau State under the Land Use Act of 1978, which nationalized all land in Nigeria. Edward Fluet discusses the impact of the trade …

The Emerging Presence Of Mexican Law In California Courts, Jorge A. Vargas Nov 2005

The Emerging Presence Of Mexican Law In California Courts, Jorge A. Vargas

San Diego International Law Journal

In a quick search for cases involving foreign law that have been decided by California courts over the last two years, the results were not surprising: 100 cases were governed by Mexican law, 57 by Canadian law, 29 by Japanese law, 28 by German law, and 12 by Chinese law. I would like to pose two ideas before this learned audience: first, that becoming familiar with foreign law is a practical, intriguing and beneficial exercise for California judges and for American judges at large. And second, that Mexican law represents an emerging and a very large component of foreign law …

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization: Applying The Fair Housing Act To The Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Myron Orfield Nov 2005

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization: Applying The Fair Housing Act To The Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Myron Orfield

Vanderbilt Law Review

A growing national debate about the future of race, housing, and urban policy in the United States is reflected in the recent controversy over the administration of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit ("LIHTC") program, the largest federal program that supports building low-income housing. Administered by the Treasury Department, the program allows investors in residential rental property to claim tax credits for the development or rehabilitation of property to be rented to low-income tenants. The program is implemented mainly through state agencies which distribute the credit to developers on a competitive basis. Part of the LIHTC statute, which passed without debate …

The Strategic Use Of Mexico To Restrict South American Access To The Diversity Visa Lottery, Jonathan H. Wardle Nov 2005

The Strategic Use Of Mexico To Restrict South American Access To The Diversity Visa Lottery, Jonathan H. Wardle

Vanderbilt Law Review

In 1990, Congress enacted the Family Unity and Employment Opportunity Act (the "1990 Act"), which created a visa lottery to enhance the diversity of the immigrant stream and to ensure that areas of the world sending relatively few immigrants to the United States could still have access to the immigrant stream. In order to achieve these goals, Congress created a complex formula by which 55,000 "diversity" visas would be distributed annually among six geographically defined regions based on the total number of immigrant admissions from each region. Under this formula, regions with relatively low admission rates are granted more visas …

Climatology Of Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In Georgia, Usa, 1992-2003, M.L. Bentley, J.A. Stallins Nov 2005

Climatology Of Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In Georgia, Usa, 1992-2003, M.L. Bentley, J.A. Stallins

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

A 12-year climatology of lightning cloud-to-ground flash activity for Georgia revealed the existence of three primary regions of high lightning activity: the area surrounding the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area, east-central Georgia along the fall line, and along the Atlantic coast. Over 8.2 million ground flashes were identified during the climatology. July was the most active lightning month and December was the least active. Annual, seasonal, and diurnal distributions of cloud-to-ground flashes were also examined. These patterns illustrated the interacting effects of land cover, topography, and convective instability in enhancing lightning activity throughout Georgia. A synoptic analysis of the ten highest …
