A Full System Characterization Of The Measurement Uncertainty Of A Conducted Emissions Measurement System, Robert A. Menke Jan 2005

A Full System Characterization Of The Measurement Uncertainty Of A Conducted Emissions Measurement System, Robert A. Menke

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards for an accredited test laboratory require that the measurement uncertainty of the measuring instruments be characterized. The CISPR 16-4 standard gives guidance to the magnitude of this uncertainty, but no method of characterization. This thesis describes a method to perform this characterization on a conducted emissions measurement system, taking advantage of full system analysis techniques to reduce the uncertainty to exceptionally low levels. In addition, a framework is introduced whereby uncertainty can decomposed into its constituent parts such that the laboratory operator can identify methods to improve the systems performance.

Transnational Educational Fundraising In Punjab: Old Practices, New Readings, Margaret Walton-Roberts Jan 2005

Transnational Educational Fundraising In Punjab: Old Practices, New Readings, Margaret Walton-Roberts

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Since the early 1990s social scientists have highlighted the involvement of immigrants in homeland development projects. In particular we have seen a reassessment of the importance of immigrant remittances, and related to this, an interest in transnationalism; the idea that immigrants create dense social, economic and political networks that transcend source and host nations. In this paper I argue that rather than a recent development, such activity has in fact been ongoing in parts of Punjab since the early twentieth century, and affects many elements of society, not just emigrants and their families. I illustrate this with an overview of …

Marine Radiations At Small Geographic Scales: Speciation In Neotropical Reef Gobies (Elacatinus), Michael S. Taylor, Michael E. Hellberg Jan 2005

Marine Radiations At Small Geographic Scales: Speciation In Neotropical Reef Gobies (Elacatinus), Michael S. Taylor, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

Studies of speciation in the marine environment have historically compared broad-scale distributions and estimated larval dispersal potential to infer the geographic barriers responsible for allopatric speciation. However, many marine clades show high species diversity in geographically restricted areas where barriers are not obvious and estimated dispersal potential should bring many sister taxa into contact. Genetic differentiation at small (separation <1000 >km) spatial scales could facilitate speciation by mechanisms other than the gradual accumulation of reproductive isolation during extended allopatry, such as ecological adaptation to local environmental conditions or the rapid evolution of genes tied to mate recognition, but the role of …

Mapping A Materialist Latcrit Discourse On Racism , Reginald C. Oh Jan 2005

Mapping A Materialist Latcrit Discourse On Racism , Reginald C. Oh

Cleveland State Law Review

This Essay will analyze the call for a return to a discourse on the material reality of racism, and offer two ways to develop a materialist LatCrit and Critical Race critique of dominant, inequality reinforcing legal narratives: by (1) critically analyzing the narrative structure of dominant legal narratives, and by (2) incorporating a critical geographical consciousness into LatCrit and Critical Race critique and discourse. This Essay contends that any critical discourse must explicitly recognize the multi-dimensional, multi-faceted, multi-causal reality of racism and racial subordination, and it must expose dominant legal narratives for obscuring and obfuscating that reality.

Curriculum Design To Teach High School Students: How To Pull Evidence From Text, Karen Marie Hughes Bray Jan 2005

Curriculum Design To Teach High School Students: How To Pull Evidence From Text, Karen Marie Hughes Bray

All Graduate Projects

Inadequate pe1formance of Washington State's public school students on national exams motivated the state legislature to pass the Basic Education Act in 1993. Graduation requirements were changed and expectations increased to specific skill levels in reading, writing, and several other subjects. The problem is that48% of North Central High School IO'" graders have averaged below standard in reading and 56% have averaged below standard in writing for the last six years. The project is designed to increase reading and writing skills at the high school level in classes outside of the academic arena by direct instruction. Washington State's Commission on …

This project provides prototype lesson plans that support grade level expectations and uses t4e Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements as a basis for the concepts being taught. A unit of lesson plans was developed that integrates music into the language arts. Worksheets, graphic organizers and a music book list were developed as …

Supporting Sustained Economic Development, Steven Radelet Jan 2005

Supporting Sustained Economic Development, Steven Radelet

Michigan Journal of International Law

There is no magic formula for sustained economic development in poor countries. Strategies that succeed in one country may not be appropriate in another. Yet there are several broad similarities across the countries that have been most successful in achieving development over the past forty years. This Article takes a very broad overview of economic development in low-income countries over this period and makes three basic points.

Ammonia: Measurement Issues, Lowry A. Harper Jan 2005

Ammonia: Measurement Issues, Lowry A. Harper

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Ammonia (NH3) is a colorless gas under standard conditions, whose pungent odor is easily discernible at concentrations above about 10 ppm, and to some persons, down to almost 1 ppm. It is the major basic neutralizing gas in the atmosphere so it has an important role in the neutralization of atmospheric acids generated by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). As a result, the reaction product of NH3, ammonium (NH4 +), forms an aerosol that is a major component of atmospheric aerosols and in precipitation (Asman et al., …
