Intelligent Assessment System Robotic / Nurul Ain Hassim, Hassim Nurul Ain Jan 2005

Intelligent Assessment System Robotic / Nurul Ain Hassim, Hassim Nurul Ain

Student Works (2000-2009)

Intelligence is harder to define than knowledge. When researchers m the field of artificial intelligence talk about intelligence in technical systems, they usually use it to suggest that their software is more flexible, more readable, and easier to use than some other software. Early attempts were limited to only simple grading of assignment, but recent developments have started to focus on adaptive assessment. The assessment systems use adaptive approaches to support intelligent assessment and individualized learning. Various approaches have been used for this purposed and the field is still quite new. Keeping this in my mind, I decided to build …

Developmental Fmri Study: Face And Object Recognition, Ann D. Gathers Jan 2005

Developmental Fmri Study: Face And Object Recognition, Ann D. Gathers

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Visual processing, though seemingly automatic, is complex. Typical humansprocess objects and faces routinely. Yet, when a disease or disorder disrupts face andobject recognition, the effects are profound. Because of its importance and complexity, visual processing has been the subject of many adult functional imaging studies. However, relatively little is known about the development of the neural organization andunderlying cognitive mechanisms of face and object recognition. The current projectused functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify maturational changes inthe neural substrates of face and object recognition in 5-8 year olds, 9-11 year olds, andadults. A passive face and object viewing task revealed cortical …

Mercury Contamination Of Channel And Floodplain Sediments In Wilson Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Willard E. Rodgers Ii Jan 2005

Mercury Contamination Of Channel And Floodplain Sediments In Wilson Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Willard E. Rodgers Ii

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant affecting aquatic environments and human health world wide. Sediments in urban streams can store Hg from historical industrial waste releases in channel and floodplain deposits. Subsequent erosion of these deposits can remobilize sediment-bound Hg impacting downstream receiving waters. This study describes the distribution of Hg in floodplain and channel sediments of Wilson Creek and its tributaries using geochemical sediment analysis and cesium-137 dating. The upper Wilson Creek watershed drains the southern two-thirds of Springfield, Missouri. Results indicate that Hg concentrations in overbank and active channel sediments along the entire stream length are elevated above the …

Comparative Land Use Law: Patterns Of Sustainability, John R. Nolon Jan 2005

Comparative Land Use Law: Patterns Of Sustainability, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Land use scholars and practitioners in the United States trace the development of domestic land use law to 1916, when the City of New York adopted the nation's first comprehensive zoning law, and then on to 1926 when the U.S. Supreme Court declared zoning constitutional in Euclid v. Ambler Realty. Some have studied European influences stemming from late nineteenth century regulations and the urban design principles imported from the great cities of the era. Others know about the catastrophic London fire of 1666 and how it transformed society's understanding of why individual property rights, to some degree, must be subject …

Modes Of Participation In Mass Atrocity, Mark J. Osiel Jan 2005

Modes Of Participation In Mass Atrocity, Mark J. Osiel

Cornell International Law Journal

In this essay in the Symposium on Milosevic & Hussein on Trial, the author addresses the choice between "command responsibility" & "participation in a joint criminal enterprise" in mass atrocity to argue that the International Criminal Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) makes liability under command responsibility too difficult to prosecute. Analysis of the incentives of prosecutors & the limitations of the binary character of liability delineates the difficulties of linking perpetrators & accessories. The US posture toward enterprise participation is discussed in terms of national versus international prosecutors & superior responsibility. A discussion of the domestic politics of international …

Development Of A Knowledge Management Model In Large-Scale International Space Science Projects, Jose Luis Nunez Jan 2005

Development Of A Knowledge Management Model In Large-Scale International Space Science Projects, Jose Luis Nunez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large-scale international science projects (LISPs) are those projects where two or more countries formally agree to cooperate toward the achievement of a scientific, research and development, or engineering goal. In general, only projects exceeding $1 billion U.S. are considered LISPs, so sheer size commands attention, and because they are so costly and visible, failure can lead to significant scientific, financial and political consequences. This researched focused on how 7 different critical success factors impacted the level of technical interface knowledge shared among international partners involved in a large-scale international space science project (LISSP) – the International Space Station (ISS), which …

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris Jan 2005

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible than published texts to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. In particular among primary source materials, manuscripts such as diaries …

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke Jan 2005

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of ditches in the Missouri River floodplain in southwestern Iowa and northwestern Missouri resulted in the recovery of nine unionid mollusk species. The floodplain ditches may provide valuable habitat for mussels in a region that has suffered a tremendous decrease in productive aquatic habitats over the past sixty-eight years. Additional survey activity is needed to determine the complete inventory of unionid mollusks in the area.

The Moxee City (Washington) Mammoth: Morphostratigraphic, Taphonomic, And Taxonomic Considerations, Karl Lillquist, Steve Lundblad, Bax R. Barton Jan 2005

The Moxee City (Washington) Mammoth: Morphostratigraphic, Taphonomic, And Taxonomic Considerations, Karl Lillquist, Steve Lundblad, Bax R. Barton

Geography Faculty Scholarship

A nearly complete, but highly fractured, proboscidean tusk was unearthed during parking lot construction near Moxee City in central Washington in May 2001. Schreger angle analysis revealed that the tusk was from a mammoth. AMS radiocarbon dating of the tusk established that the mammoth died 14,570 14C yr BP. The age, combined with the biogeography of proboscidean finds in the Pacific Northwest, suggests the tusk is from a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi). The condition of the tusk and its association with basalt and crystalline erratics suggest that a locally derived tusk was swept up in the advancing flood and transported …

College Students' Development Of Social Support And Its Relationship To Pre -Orientation Experiences, Brent J. Bell Jan 2005

College Students' Development Of Social Support And Its Relationship To Pre -Orientation Experiences, Brent J. Bell

Doctoral Dissertations

The work of any life transition involves specific tasks, often including the re-establishment of social support in a variety of forms (Weiss, 1974). College students are particularly affected by transition, often disrupting established support systems while transitioning into adulthood. To assist with this transition, campuses offer a number of services (e.g., admissions/alumni programs, campus visits, pre-orientation programs, first-year orientation, first-year seminars). Such services are defined in this study as Comprehensive Transitional Programs (CTP). Little is known about how CTP impact social support. This study focused on adapting the Campus Focused Social Provisions Scale (CF-SPS), as an instrument to measure social …

Innovation And Institutions: Examining The Black Box, Edinaldo Tebaldi Jan 2005

Innovation And Institutions: Examining The Black Box, Edinaldo Tebaldi

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contributes to the literature by investigating the links between institutions and innovation from both a theoretical and an empirical standpoint. Specifically, this dissertation (i) develops a theoretical growth model that explicitly accounts for the influences of institutions on technical innovation and output production; (ii) specifies an empirical model suitable to examine the affect of institutions on technical innovation based on a theoretical model; and (iii) tests if different measures of institutions (i.e., Control of Corruption, Rule of Law, Regulatory Quality and Expropriation Risk) have differentiated impacts on innovation.

A major prediction of the theoretical model is that better …

Bridging The Gap Between Asynchronous And Traditional Learning Environments: Technology For Adult Learners, Jayne E. Pelletier Jan 2005

Bridging The Gap Between Asynchronous And Traditional Learning Environments: Technology For Adult Learners, Jayne E. Pelletier

Doctoral Dissertations

The growth of new technologies has caused renewed interest in distance learning and has impacted the instructional delivery of courses. This interest ranges from nontraditional learners to businesses using distance education to meet the needs of employees working in multiple geographic sites. A review of the literature suggests that interaction is an important factor in learning and that improving interaction improves transformational learning and constructivism. Since asynchronous delivery tools can potentially marginalize social and cultural skills prevalent in a classroom setting, new technology may resolve these issues.

This study examines a web-based, VoIP platform (Interwise) as a means for instructional …
