The Origins Of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature: Prophecy, Babylon, And 1 Enoch, Sarah Robinson Feb 2005

The Origins Of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature: Prophecy, Babylon, And 1 Enoch, Sarah Robinson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

From what wells did the apocalyptic writers draw? What motivated them to write such bizarre and fantastic stories about the future end of history and battles between the forces of good and the forces of evil? The Book of Daniel is considered the first and only apocalypse of the Hebrew Bible, and it was the primary inspiration for much of the Book of Revelation, Apocalypse of John in the Christian New Testament. But well before Daniel, apocalyptic passages appeared in Jewish literature. With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 came also the discovery of the oldest …

Reflection And Cognitive Strategy Instruction: Modeling Active Learning For Pre-Service Teachers, Barbara C. Palmer, C. Glennon Rowell, Mary Alice Brooks Feb 2005

Reflection And Cognitive Strategy Instruction: Modeling Active Learning For Pre-Service Teachers, Barbara C. Palmer, C. Glennon Rowell, Mary Alice Brooks

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading methodology courses, like other courses in college, are often one-dimensional when it comes to instructional delivery systems. Too often, "teacher talk" that elicits far too little reflection prevails. This practice can be changed with activities calling for students to construct knowledge from their experiences, thus following basic tenets of constructivism. The purpose of this article is to discuss how pre-service teachers can be taught to think beyond strategies in methodology and reflect upon language itself Three instructional strategies - semantic feature analysis, fictitious writing systems activities, and nonsense story analysis - are examples of ways college professors can get …

The Demand Performance Of Bus Rapid Transit, Graham Currie Feb 2005

The Demand Performance Of Bus Rapid Transit, Graham Currie

Journal of Public Transportation

This article uses a trip attribute approach to examine the relative passenger attractiveness of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems compared to other transit modes. It examines how passengers value trip attributes for on-street bus, BRT, and light rail and heavy rail systems in passenger behavior research. Empirical data is presented which suggests that passengers value trip attributes for BRT and rail modes in a broadly similar manner. All of these transit modes are favored relative to on-street bus. These findings suggest that BRT systems should be as effective as rail in generating patronage when developed to replace on-street bus services. …

"Straight Stealing": Towards An Indigenous System Of Cultural Property Protection, Angela R. Riley Feb 2005

"Straight Stealing": Towards An Indigenous System Of Cultural Property Protection, Angela R. Riley

Washington Law Review

Incidents involving theft of indigenous peoples' traditional knowledge and the blatant appropriation of culture have become more widely acknowledged in recent decades. It is now apparent that international, national, and tribal laws must work together to protect the cultural property of indigenous groups. However, tribal law, which provides vital cultural context, must serve as the foundation. Unlike top-down legal systems, tribal laws reflect tribal economic systems, cultural beliefs, and sensitive sacred knowledge in nuanced ways that national and international regimes simply cannot. Accordingly, this Article offers two central reasons why the development of tribal law is critical for indigenous peoples …

Eeotogists increasingly recognize the need to understand how landscapes ami food webs interact. Reservoir ecosystems are heavily subsidized by nutrients and detritus from surrounding watersheds, and ofren contain abundant populations of gizzard shad, an omnivorous ftsh that consumes plankton and detritus. Gizzard shad link terrestrial landscapes ami pelagic reservoir food webs by consuming detritus, translocating nutrients from sedimctn detritus to the water column, and consuming zooplaukton. The abundance of gizzard shad increases with watershed agricuhuralization, most likely through n variety oj mechanisms npeniting on ttuvat and adult life stages. Gizzard shad have myriad effects on reservoirs, including impacts on nutrients, …

Targeting Relative Inflation Forecast As Monetary Policy Framework For Adopting The Euro, Lucjan T. Orlowski Feb 2005

Targeting Relative Inflation Forecast As Monetary Policy Framework For Adopting The Euro, Lucjan T. Orlowski

WCBT Faculty Publications

This study proposes relative inflation forecast targeting as an operational framework of monetary policy for adopting the euro by the EU new Member States. This strategy assumes containing differentials between the domestic and the eurozone inflation forecasts as an operational target. A model prescribing the RIFT framework is presented along with a set of appropriate policy indicator variables and instrument rules. The proposed framework advances the strategy based on relatively strict inflation targeting that is currently pursued by some NMS. Several ARCHclass tests in various functional forms are employed for providing preliminary empirical evidence on convergence of inflation differentials relative …

Social And Cultural Geographies Of South-East Asia, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong, Lisa Law Feb 2005

Social And Cultural Geographies Of South-East Asia, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong, Lisa Law

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The paper is an overview of English language publications that discuss what might be considered 'social' and 'cultural' geographies in Southeast Asia over the past two decades. We have strategically chosen two major themes that help us shape the mass of material into digestible strands: (1) the politics of social and cultural change; and (2) constructing identities. The former addresses various politics: the politics of nationhood; the politics of national development; the politics of cultural sites; the politics of urban change; and the politics of the global-local.

Introduction: China, Ltd, William A. Callahan Feb 2005

Introduction: China, Ltd, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The study of Chinese nationalism is very popular--both in China and the West. This article introduces a special section of seven articles (four of which are in this issue) on 'The Limits of Chinese Nationalism', arguing that our understanding of nationalism in China is problematic. This special section aims to explore the limits of many of the statements about Chinese nationalism that have now become 'common sense': the rise of Chinese nationalism, nationalism filling an ideological vacuum, elites manipulating nationalism to gain legitimacy, and so on. Using critical IR theory this Introduction explores the concept of limits to argue that …
